Larry Ross Mathews, 66, of Austin, and formerly of Tyler, died Monday, May 25, 2009, surrounded by his loving family. Larry was born in Warren, Ohio, to Donald Eugene and Marjorie Jane Mathews.

Proudly serving his country in the United States Air Force for 23 years, he retired as a master sergeant. He was currently employed with the Internal Revenue Service.

Larry was preceded in death by his father, Donald Mathews. He is survived by his wife of 10 years, Vickie; daughter, Lauri Grisham and husband Lee; sons Bryan Mathews and Phillip Mathews; mother, Marjorie Mathews of Tyler; sisters, Dolores Martin and husband Stan of Van, Phyllis Williams and husband Harold of Chappel Hill, and Miriam Morrison of Galveston. He is also survived by three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

In 2008 Larry graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor's degree, from American International University.
Larry was a 32nd degree Master Mason. He was a member of the Austin Scottish Rite Bodies, Ben Hur Shrine, the Ben Hur director's staff and was a past master of Onion Creek Masonic Lodge No. 220, which later awarded him the Golden Trowel Award. He was a past patron of Creedmoor Chapter No. 607, Order of the Eastern
Star. He loved hunting, fishing and woodworking.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 28, 2009, at Austin-Peel and Son Funeral Home, Austin. Burial will follow at Onion Creek Masonic Cemetery on Circle S Road.
