John M. McLellan
Loving Husband, Father, Grandfather
LOWELL -- John M. McLellan, a lifelong resident of Lowell, died May 12, 2012, at his home, his
loving family by his side, aged 51 years. He was the beloved husband of Linda A. (Allwood)
McLellan, with whom he shared 30 years of marriage.
Born in Lowell, May 31, 1960, a son of George McLellan of Port Richey, Florida and Mary
(Coomas) McLellan of Lowell. He received his early education in the Lowell school system and
graduated from Greater Lowell Vocational High School with the Class of 1980. He furthered his
education at Middlesex Community College with a focus on substance abuse counseling.
John met Linda while at the Lowell Voke; they married on May 8, 1982, and settled in Lowell to
raise their family.
Mr. McLellan became associated with Solomon Mental Health as a substance abuse counselor,
and continued his counseling career at the E. N. Rogers V. A. Hospital in Bedford, until illness
forced his retirement. He was a dedicated, gifted counselor who loved his life's work, and by
following his true calling, enriched many lives along the way.
He enlisted in the U. S. Navy on June 17, 1980, serving aboard the USS Fort Snelling, as a
Petty Officer Third Class, during the Lebanon and Grenada campaigns. He received the Sea
Service Deployment Ribbon, Navy Unit Commendation with one Bronze Star, Armed Forces
Expeditionary Medal with one Bronze Star, and the Navy Expeditionary Medal with one Bronze
Star. He was a member of the Order of the Bluenose. He was honorably discharged on January
13, 1984.
John was a member of the William North Masonic Lodge, AF & AM, in Lowell. He was a 32nd
Degree Mason with Scottish Rite, Valley of Lowell, and a member of the Aleppo Shrine of
Wilmington, where he volunteered on the weekends. He loved his fellow brethren and he loved
his country.
He was a passionate Red Sox fan - never missing a game, and also enjoyed playing golf. Most
of all, John was a dedicated family man and a true patriot, who will always be remembered for
his dedication and service to our country's veterans.
The family would like to thank the Lowell General Hospital, VNA Hospice for their outstanding
nursing care and loving support during John's illness, as well the many treating doctors and
dedicated staff who tended to John with compassion, care and kindness.
Besides his devoted wife Linda, he is survived by four cherished daughters, Amanda K.
McLellan, Mary Ann L. McLellan, Megan C. McLellan, and Jessica M. McLellan, all of Lowell. A
grandson, Jesus A. McLellan of Lowell. Two brothers, James Clement, and Robert McLellan
and his wife Colleen, all of Lowell. A father-in-law, John Allwood of Lowell. Three sisters-in-law,
Sandra J. Lerned and her husband Ronald, and Donna M. Furillo and her husband Patrick, all of
Lowell, and Doris L. Cunningham and her husband James of Nashua, NH. A brother-in-law,
Steven D. Allwood and his wife Melanie of Nashua. He also leaves several nieces and
nephews. He was the brother of the late Richard McLellan and son-in-law of the late Claudette
Allwood.
