When we were in grade school, Fred, Jim Curry, Paul Taylor and I offered to get a Christmas tree for the schoolroom. So we went along the railroad tracks and cut down a pine tree. Fred got full of sap! Then we got a bucket of sand to put the tree in it. NOTE: when you mix sand and pine tree sap together, it makes a mess!

Yes, Freddie Brown was a trip! I remember in Elementary school Freddie was the class clown. Ms. Kruse was our 2nd grade teacher, and Freddie was always getting in trouble; Ms. Kruse would grab him by the ear and drag him down to the principal’s office. So one day, Fred had these large realistic looking plastic ears that would fit on over his ears and he began cutting up in class. Ms Kruse warned him to settle down to no avail; when she had had enough, she said "you’re going to the principal’s office Mister", and with that she grabbed him by the ear; which came off in her hand and she starting screaming, threw the ear across the room, and ran out of the room. Of course the class roared, and then the principal came and took Freddie out of the classroom.

Fred and I were friends in Nokomis Elementary and Venice Jr. High. “Freddie Brown” was a hard one to tame. His personality was always a challenge for instructors to temper. He certainly traveled his own his own road. When Allen Timmerman lost his life during the VW bus adventure, we were allowed to leave school to attend the memorial. I recall Freddie didn’t want to take the excused time to leave school. Not like him! After I departed the area I would enquire through a cousin what Freddie is doing and the answers were disturbing but not unexpected. God bless Freddie.

Fred was one of the first kids I met in Nokomis. His family had a thing, business near the railroad tracks on the road to my Moms house. I would walk home from school and he would hide in the bushes with his buddies, Alan Timmerman and Paul Taylor and jump out at me until I jumped on him one day and scratched his face up, we were friends til the end after that. There was some kind of a hardware store there near the railroad tracks and I remember us kids gong in there and getting those little cokes that you had to pull around in a trail before you could get the bottle out of the cooler. Funny when you are a kid you think time goes so slow and everything is forever.

Freddy was a shy kid when it came to girl's...I still remember his grin and his sillyness.  I went to Elementary School, Jr. High and High School.  His family and my family were long time natives of Nokomis and I remember his parents business at the rail road tracks...everyone liked Freddie and he had a great sense of humor.....every time Freddie tried to do something he shouldn't.... he would get caught every time....when the rest were able to pull it off and not get into trouble.....Freddie ended up taking the heat...

Freddie God Bless You!  We certainly miss you.
