Laurel Youth's Car Skids Into Fatal Crash

William Gregg Panton, 16, of Mount Pleasant Drive, Laurel, died Thursday in Sarasota Memorial Hospital from head injuries sustained in a two-car accident Wednesday evening on the Old Venice By-Way, Venice.

The youth received fatal head injuries when his northbound compact car skidded 134 feet while attempting to pass, spun around, and hit the left side of a northbound panel truck driven by Frithjob Howard Henriksen of Route 2, Nokomis, causing that vehicle to turn over.

Panton, Henriksen and Douglas Spicer, Nokomis, passenger in the Panton vehicle, were taken to Venice Hospital. Panton was transferred to Sarasota Memorial Hospital. Henriksen complained of pain on his right side, but received no other major injuries. Spicer suffered a broken right hand and minor bruises.

Gregg was quiet and reserved most times.) He sure did have alot of freckles, they blend right in with his hair. I re,member he had a very gentle smile.

I was shocked to say the least when Gregg died... it was a freak accident and could have just easily claimed two lives that day. Gregg was a good guy like most of the kids I went to school with.
