Obituary of Dr. Frederick DuFour Jr.

Dr. Frederick H. DuFour, Jr, 69 of Columbia, South Carolina, died peacefully at home early Monday morning, July 9, 2018, following a long illness. Despite his illness, he remained cheerfully uplifting and full of new ideas and possibilities.
He is survived by his loving wife, Anne Catharine Blake; daughters, Betsey DuFour, Abigail DuFour Thompson (Andrew), Emily DuFour (Chris Otto), step-sons, Adam Blake (Emmy), Eric Blake (Amanda), step-daughter, Amanda Blake Henze (Niels); grandsons, Bernard, Obed and Wally; granddaughters, Anais, Zoey, Amalie and Aurora; sisters, Barbara DuFour, and Priscilla DuFour Vogel (Doug); and nephews Simon, Colin, Alex, Derek, Casey, and niece Daphne.
Born in Oneida, on Oct 16, 1948, he was the son of Rita Ackerman DuFour and Frederick H. Dufour. Fred attended Oneida High School and graduated from Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High School, class of 1968. He received his PhD from the University of Texas in Psychology and completed an MSc in Evidence-Based Medicine at the University of Oxford (UK). He was a graduate student in the PhD program at Harvard University (in Child Development) and also holds a BA and an MA.
Prior to retiring to South Carolina, Fred was the Executive Director of Family & Children's Society in Binghamton, NY. Earlier in his career, he was a member of the Extension faculty of Cornell University. While at Cornell, he served as a Co-Principle investigator of the Nations Epidemiology Study which examines the rates of Child Abuse and Neglect among Migrant Families. He went on to become the Director of the Center for Evidence-Based Community Psychiatry at SUNY Upstate Medical University and taught at the Syracuse and Binghamton campuses. He travelled and lectured internationally including China, Belgium, Maastricht, and India.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Sunday, August 5, 2018, at 10:00 AM at the Ironside Funeral Home, Inc., 342 Main St, Oneida, NY, 13421. There are no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made in Fred’s memory to Heartstrings Hospice, 115 Blarney Dr Suite 204, Columbia, SC 29223.
