
VERONA- JoAnn M. Harris, 73, Smith Road, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, in the Oneida Healthcare Center, surrounded by her family and friends, following an illness of several months.
Born in Rome, on November 3, 1950, she was the daughter of S. Michael and AnnaMae Kenneally Hugunine. A lifelong resident of Verona, JoAnn was a graduate of Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High School, Madison-Oneida BOCES and Mohawk Valley Community College, where she received her nursing degree and took extended nursing courses at Utica College. She married Warren A. Harris in Verona, on April 2, 1977.
Prior to her retirement, JoAnn was a nursing administrator with the Midstate Correctional Facility. She was a member of the Verona Fire Department Auxiliary, a life member of the Women of the Moose, a member of Verona Post #6811 Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, loved to travel, camp, attend parties and shop for her children and grandchildren, which normally began in January.
Surviving besides her husband, Warren, are her four daughters, Kelly DeRider of Holland Patent, Kristy Hammonds of New Hartford, Katie Coon of Fairport and Niki (Maurico) Saldarriaga of Woodstock, Georgia; her two sons, Timothy (Lauren) Harris of Verona and Michael (Stephanie) Harris of Raleigh, North Carolina; her sister, Jackie Thompson of Aiken, South Carolina; her two close friends, Sharon Dixon and Cheryl Collins, both of Verona; her eleven grandchildren, Bailey Harris, Zaiah, Maya and Hanna Hammonds, Madelyn and Morgan Coon, Ruby and Leo Saldarriaga, Colton, Emma and Olivia Harris, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents and her brother, Micheal Huginine in 1984.
Funeral services will be held 11 AM, Monday from the Campbell-Dean Funeral Home, Inc., 260 Main Street, Oneida with the Reverend Michael Usborne, officiating. Friends and family may call at the funeral home, 1-5 PM, Sunday. Interment will be made in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Rome. Contributions, in her memory, may be made to the Verona Fire Department of the Verona Post #6811 VFW.
