What about Wilsons Grand Cafe....every thing was so good...it was a big loss when they retired.

Paul-I loved the Grand Cafe! Archie Wilson was a chef at Shangri-La for a few years after they closed the cafe. He was the best! I loved the Chef Salads! They were huge and great! I loved to have vegetable soup at the Hotel Vinita.
I don't think I ever got back to you on Mrs. Boling. She is about 85. She is very sharp and I love going to visit her. She was still living at the corner of Foreman when I saw her last time that has been a few years ago. My first graders can't believe that my first grad teacher is still alive. I show them a picture of her and I then and now!

Carla - I can't believe she's still alive either. What ever happened to our 6th grade teacher (Mr. Bronson(?))?

I thought that the Wilsons retired from business. I never knew that he continued to work. Didn't someone take over the Cafe?

Paul-I don't know if anyone else ran the cafe after they left or not. They were the best people. Archie loved my little sister and always came and sat at our booth. We went to the lake and ate several times while he was there. He would always come out and talk to us. They lived on Foreman across from Tommy Greiner.
I do not know what happened to Mr. Brannon. Remember when Mrs. Griffith started getting senile and Mr. B came. Ann Lynch and Sara Oats were so in love with him! He was single but he married over the summer!

Carla - I used to deliver papers to the Wilsons when I had a paper route and then worked as a busboy in their restaurant one summer. I have still remember having the most incredible experience when I ate one of Archie's chicken pot pies (it was as close to perfection as you can get). What is in that space now?

Yes, it was Powell's Garage, Null's garage was next to the Hotel Vinita on Main Street.
Julie Powell's grandfather owned the garage and alot of other downtown property. Dr. Julie Powell Thomas is now a Psychologist and owns The Tulsa Developmental Pediatrics & Center for Family Psychology. I see her on the KOTV Ch 6 news at noon once a week, giving advice on a call in segment concerning child development problems. Julie seems to give a lot of good solid advise, not an air head like alot of psychologists.

The Grand Cafe is long gone as well as everything else in that section of the block. That whole area was replaced with a McDonald's!!!! No more Garland Cleaners, Wright's Department Store, Orvin Connor's Barber Shop, Dr. Gilbert's Dentist Office or anything else! I really miss the big brick buildings.

Several years ago OK State Bank torn down the building on the southeast corner of the 100 block of South Wilson and made a parking lot, and recently they torn down an additional building north of that to the alley. Soon their will be nothing left of the original main street.
OK State Bank in now in the process of tearing down a huge section of buildings on Scraper, one of which was once home to Powell's Garage.

What was formerly CR Moore's, is now Bill Hodge Dodge, and they are tearing down the brick buildings north of CR Moore to the alley. The former Bill Raines auto parts store will be a part of the tear down.

Audrey Boling is still alive. I saw her not too long ago, and she looked real good.

My gosh... downtown is only two blocks anyway!! I don't see how they can market the town as historic when they've torn everything down. And a McDonald's right in the center of town!!! What are they going to do next, rip out the baseball field in South Park and build a jail??... ooopss, wait they've already done that. I know that in order to survive, a community has to either change or adapt, but what a change for the worse.

You said it! It is not the town we grew up in. I find it really sad!

It sounds like Vinita could be the next Bluejacket...

OK State Bank also torn down Nicely's Filling Station at the corner of Scraper and Canadian and the house next to it and made that area into a parking lot.

And a few years ago 1st National Bank torn down one of the big brick buildings on Illinois across from Carters Shopping Center to create a parking lot.

With no stores in town, why do we need all the parking spaces????????

At the present time OK DOT has begun work to 4-lane Illinois from the Railroad east to the Turnpike entrance. And this fall OK DOT will begin work to 4-lane North Wilson from the Railroad north to the ESH Road.

Won't a 4 lane from the railroad tracks to the turnpike wipe out most of the business east of the railroad? I remember most of them, including the Dairy Queen, were real close to the road.

I USED TO WORK AT MCCLELLANS RIGHT OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL. THAT'S WHERE I LEARNED TO FOLD SHIRTS PROPERLY AND TO THIS DAY I HAVE NOT FORGOTTEN HOW. MY BROTHER USED TO WORK AT DAIRY QUEEN WHEN I WAS IN GRADE SCHOOL MY SISTER AND I WOULD STOP BY THERE AND SEE IF HE WOULD GIVE US A FREE CONE BUT HE WOULDN'T.
I REMEMBER GOING TO THE SHOP ACROSS THE STREET FROM JR. HIGH FOR LUNCH. I GOT A HOT DOG ONCE AND MY JAWS LOCKED WHEN I TRIED TO EAT IT, AND I THINK I HAVE TOLD THIS STORY BEFORE AND IF I HAVE I AM SORRY. I'M HAVING A "SENIOR MOMENT".

Most all of the old buildings along the south side of East Illinois are gone except for Clantons Cafe and a couple of others. New businesses have been built back from the highway. The ones closer to the highway will loose frontage used for parking. Clanton's torn down the filling station next door to the east, so they now have plenty of parking.

The Dairy Queen was tore down several years ago and replaced with a small real estate office building.

McKisick Jewelry remodeled one of the buildings just west of Clantons and moved there several years ago.

Just across the tracks on the north side of East Illinois is a new Woodshed convenience store and gas station, and a new O'Reilly Auto Parts store. A western store was built at the SW corner of lst and Illinois, but it is now a clothes cleaner and laundry pickup, tanning salon, and a real estate office.

East Illinois has really improved in looks over the last 40 years since Wal-Mart enabled business to move that direction. But in return, South Wilson, South Scraper, South Vann and West Illinois and West Canadian have declined in business.

But as they say, and I quote: "There's No Place Like Home" a simplier time and place. We may not have the businesses, buildings or shopping but we have great memories, at least I do.

That's very true. As we get older, we tend to forget the bad stuff more than the good. That's why we usually have such a rosy picture of growing up.

Whatever happened to Mr. Childress? I remember hearing the story that he got one of the Carter girls pregnant, but never heard anything more and he seemed to have dropped off the radar after that. To his credit, I learned a heck of a lot of science when I was in his classes and really appreciated it.

Steven Ray (Steve) Postier

Paul- Mr. Childress married Kay Carter. They moved to Kansas City where he taught in the Shawnee Schools. My brother Russell (who has attended some very good schools over the years) recently told me that Mr. Childress was the best teacher that he had ever had. I did get a passing grade in his class, but I think it was only because I was Russell's brother.

Steve - I thought it was because you went with him to those frat parties at OU. I really thought he was going to turn you into a sooner...;)

Steven Ray (Steve) Postier

Paul- You know that's funny now. I was always going to go to O.U.. My girlfriend at the time even transferred there from another school. For some reason at the last minute I decided to go to OSU. One of the best decisions of my life.

05/16/09 10:15 PM #664

Paul Ray Wever

Steve - I'm sure you still remember some of the OU aggie jokes about OSU, too.

Where is everyone? I'm bored please write something. I will comment that I'm really surprised about the Ashby's. I talked to a friend of mothers, and she agreed that there had been a girl, and she didn't stay long but no one knows what happened to her. I sure don't remember her. Carla do you suppose she was at all close to our age? Oh well time to cook.

Steven Ray (Steve) Postier

Jan- What's for dinner? oysters?

05/18/09 10:39 PM #667

Janis Ann (Jan) Dirickson (Marshall)

No Steve, we won't have oysters until we brand. Do you want to come up and rope and eat? We had Mexican casserole and it was pretty darn good. Does anyone know who Billie Harmon is married to? It's about the only question Judy can't answer.

Carla Ray Williams (Yocum)

Jan-She was in High School when we were in Jr. High. I think she was three years older than we were. She was 15 or 16 when they adopted her. For all we know she had issues and just accused him of it. I don't know if any one knows the real truth but him. Sometimes those kids come from terrible situations. My grandmother had some pretty reliable sources. Did you know Edna Tayor? She was the one who told my grandmother. They are both long gone to Heaven and my mom can't communicate with her Alzahimers. It is depressing...cause they were such nice people.
How do you make your Mexican Casserole? I will share my recipe and you share yours. My family loves it!

Rhea-We have not heard from you. Is Roger sick again? I hope the antibotics helped.

Mary Ann, Judy, Susan-Canton is coming up in The last weekend in May. If anyone is interested you could car pool to my house and we could go on Saturday the 30th. You could spend the night with me. Any takers? It is hot the best times to go are in the fall when it starts to cool. But it is fun anytime!
