Mary Ann Johnson (Null)

I'm back, but no carpet - just a messed up house. The carpet was damaged and it will still be another week. I NEVER want to build a house after this!
Steve - Thanks for offering to visit me - assisted living is sounding a little better now. I wouldn't have to deal with repairmen then and I could tell the same stories as often as I wanted.
I was shocked about Mr. Ashby - I hope there was some mistake. I loved those big Red Chief (politically incorrect as it was) tablets and fat pencils. I also remember D&M Clothiers. When I was about in the 7th grade, boys "wheat jeans" were popular for girls to wear. I also remember "pole cats". I think girls jeans still had side zippers - so it was really something to get boys jeans. I think we got them at D&M or was there a small store next to D&M? I remember a short period when it was cool to wear one's hair in curlers, under a curler cap, to go to the Drug Store and get a coke on Saturday afternoon! I think it made us think we looked like we had something really important to do on Sat night,so we had to have our hair up in curlers. I had a professional hair dryer at home, so I only wore curler caps (light blue or pink) because it was cool (we thought). I remember going to the old Rexall at first and then a few times to the new store across the street.
Lillian Rodriquez (I have no idea how to spell that) looked beautiful, curler cap or not.

Jan, Steve,Judy and probably Tooter - When I was in my late 20's, I went to a Calf Fry festival in Vinita with Lynnda. I had no idea what calf fries were, but I remember sitting next to some cowboy, who was really enjoying my innocense. We carried on quite a conversation, all the while, I thought he was eating calf liver. Later, Lynnda educated me and I so embarrassed about my comments to the cowboy. Country kids - what an education you had....

Carla - When I was in the 4th grade, someone told me that if you "sleep" with a boy, you would get pregnant. I was afraid to fall asleep next to my 2 year old nephew, in the back seat of the car, during a long car trip! I couldn't believe my own mother was putting me in that situation! Carla, you and I must have fallen off the same turnip truck!

Steve - I totally misunderstood about Dink's fries. I'll have to try the stringy variety next time. Problem is, I am outnumbered by Rib Crib lovers in my family.

Carla - this is Susan...thank you so much for your invitation to Canton! I can't make it this month, we have a family reunion, but I will most surely take a rain check...Glad you weathered the 'Swine Flu' storm ~ looking forward to seeing you at the reunion!

Mary Ann I remember my curler caps (I had several) were pastel and had lace. Actually as fine as my hair is and hates humidity I probably looked best with the curlers and cap on. Another thing, as funny as I know you are about almost anything, I'll bet that cowboy never had as good a time as he did sitting next to you.

We had to wear rollers to town cause it took all day for our hair to dry when we used dippity-do to make the curl stay in! I never wore a curler cap to town, just to sleep in. I rolled my hair every night with brush curlers and slept on them. We were really tough back then, I can't stand to sleep on them now. I was out of high school when electric curlers came on the scene. I remember getting my first bonnet hair dryer for Christmas when I was in the eighth grade. Before that, we had a hand held dryer that had a base to sit on. That hair dryer was well before its time! I found it in the attic last summer.

Judy, we stay at that place across from the Craig General. It has like two bedroom apartments for 45 dollars a night. They are ten times better than a motel room. It is a retirement home for unassisted persons.

Billy Harmon lived in Vinita for several years till I was about 30. Some of you know it but some don't. I moved back to Vinita when I was 25 and stayed till I was 38. I used to set Billy up with my single friends from Edmond, when they came to visit. She was a beautiful girl. As most of you know Billy had a beautiful daughter early on. She did get married to a guy that was a hell of a golfer. He won the club championship one year. One of the first times that Buster Wright didn't. I can't remember his name. I even ran for city council one year. Bill Kolbs dad ran for Mayor that same election. He lost and so did I. Mr. Kolb died later that year of a heart attack. He was in Europe I believe at the time.

Gene-Where in the world have you been? Welcome back! Bill and I drove through McKinney Mother's Day weekend and I thought about you. We were on our way to Tulsa to celebrate a birthday! Do you play golf?
The name of the place across from Craig General is Heartsworth House. My parents lived there before I moved them down here to Lewisville. It is very nice. I think they have some one bedrooms too. I did not realize they rented them out for overnight stays.
I knew you lived in Vinita but I did not know you ran for office. I think from what Judy said, they needed someone like you. I think you would be good at that. Have you ever done that at McKinney? Vinita could have taken a lesson from McKinney. McKinney kept it's old downtown buildings and historical homes and for many years that is what kept the town from dying. It is a charming place to go visit and an antique lovers dream. The town has now grown and prospered and has built many shopping centers and people moved in and they had to build more schools. Vinita needs new blood on it's council. We have to preserve our heritage and our history. I have been sad everytime I have been to Vinita and seen the old historical buildings gone. It use to be like living in Mayberry and I loved that. Now it is just dead! I still have many wonderful memories and it will always be a dear place to me. Generations of my family are buried at Fairview Cemetary so I will continue to visit from time to time but it will never be the same except in my heart and thoughts.

Gene - I'm glad you're back. I think I remember a party at your house when you were about in the 8th grade. I just remember lights getting turned off every time people thought your parents were out of view!
I didn't know people could stay in Heartsworth House either. Mom was there for several years.
Carla - I love the Canton idea - I aleady have family plans for that time. I think it was July when I went and it was terribly hot, but still so much fun.
Girls - As I'm remembering some clothing styles, I really do feel like an antique. There were only 2 ways to secure hose in those days and neither one had anything to do with comfort. If you sat on those hooks the wrong way -it was tough to remain a lady! Personal products of the day are also ancient history. The only women's undergarmets advertised were in the afternoon, during the soaps! That's where Steve got involved with "All My Children". It wasn't really the soap show, it was the long line 18 HOUR (ouch), white, heavy cotton Platex bra - or maybe that long line girdle. Man did women pay a price for beauty!
Honestly, my mother came to see us when my daughter was a 104 lb teenager. She suggested that she wear a girdle to cut down on the "jiggle". Nothing jiggles if you weigh 104!
Along with the curler caps and wheat jeans - it was cool to wear a boys long sleeved pin stripe shirt. There was also a phase of girls pulling off the tabs on back of a guys's shirt. I bet their mom's didn't like that to much. Judy - I think we all used brush rollers and Dippity DO. What about Noxema (did it really work) and roll-on deodorant? Tussey was the brand of choice.
Some of you girls had brothers whose jeans and shirts you could borrow. I had to convince my mother to buy them. Of course to get a fit in the fanny, we could have carried our lunches and then some, in the extra space at the waist. I think Rhea was the one that taught me to clean my rings with toothpaste, budding Heloise that she was. She always had someone's class ring. It seemed that pearl rings and charm bracelet's were very popular in Jr. High. Cameo rings were the thing in high school - I think Lynnda was the first to have a Cameo.
Tomorrow is my last day at school - and it's still wonderful to have summer vacation!

Well, do you remember wearing sweatshirts inside out? And didn't we all have a pair of Keds! And the high top tennis shoes, and the very short basketballs shorts, I think I liked them come to think of it. ON the boys, not on me. Isn't it amazing how the kids dress today whether it be for school or church. I do believe you need to dress for success. Seems to me you act better if you are dressed better. Kids of Saco can really prove that point, the nasty little devils. (some are ok) Gene you talked about Billie but do you know who she's married too? Or a last name. She really was a sweetheart I hope she can come to the reunion. I was suppose to go to Vegas Sunday with some friends but had to cancel. I get to take niece Justinn to rodeos, so Dick and Justinn's dad can brand. So that means I'll miss out on the party, you see we not only get the work done we have a big party. This crew likes to brand a few and drink several, of course this repeats over and over. But Justinn is worth it, she's a nice girl and we love her lots. I hate the fact that pople think she's my grand-daughter but I pretty much set them straight immediately. Justinn's dad is only 5 yrs younger than me. But Dick is 9 yrs older so I can see why they think it about him- he's old, I'm not....YET.OK I'm just as old as you guys. And you're not old are you? Bruce, I just made your mom's recipe for sheet cake, one of my favorites. When I use a recipe from the Vinita book I get a nice reminder of so many people. I always wanted to take voice lessons from Mrs. Evans but never got the chance. She was a lovely woman. I need to go put the cakes in Tupperware so they'll be ready for Dick to take north. Later

Hey Jan, everyone is always surprised to see that that recipe has buttermilk in it. Sheet Cake is still a family favorite with us.

Mary Ann- I didn't get involved with the soaps til college. Then it was 'Dark Shadows' and 'Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman'. Of course I would have to skip class to watch them everyday. Maybe that is why OSU didn't invite me back after 3 years???

Jan- I think I could do the 'brand a few drink several' thing.

Bruce and Jan-Where can I get a Vinita Cookbook? I collect cookbooks and would love to have one from Vinita! That cake sounds soooo good. I am a choclate cake lover!

Bruce and Steve-Bill is playing Bridlewood and Tour 18 this weekend with our son-in-law! His players gave him gift certificates to both courses!

Mary Ann-I am glad that someone was on that turnip truck with me! I could not think of anyone better than you to be on there with! Between the two of us we could have had some very dangerous knowledge! Has anyone asked Lynnda to come on the forum? Did Lillian R. ever come aboard? I am jealous you are out of school! We do not get out until June 5th!!!

Today we got yearbooks! Can you imagine 6 year olds with yearbooks??? We had a signing party outside and I now have a cramp in my hand from signing 134 first grade yearbooks! They were in color and the kids had so much fun. Brought back a lot of memories! We did not get yearbooks until we were in 7th grade!

Carla, the name of the book is Classic Cooking from Homes on the Range. I have had it for many years and use it often. In the back is an order form that lists Dorothy Logan to contact. PO Box 558 Vinita, you might want to look up her # and just call to see if the books are available. I suppose you could Google JD Logan or maybe Judy would look up her #. It's a nice book. Bruce-I made the sheet cake and I have to admit I didn't have any buttermilk, so I cheated, believe me I knew the difference. I won't cheat again.

Steve and Judy-Your God-daughter is beautiful! Who are her parents?

05/27/09 06:54 PM #686

Steven Ray (Steve) Postier

Carla- David, Judy's brother, and his wife Trish. She is Beautiful isn't she?

Bruce- I came thru Austin today and waved at you, but you didn't wave back.

Carla- I will see if I can find a cookbook for you.

And yes, that is my sweet niece Jessica. They lived in Vinita in the early 80's, but moved on, so I didn't get to enjoy her growing up years like I would have liked to. But at least we have remained close.

Mary Ann- Some girl tore the loop off one of my brother's shirts and I remember it making my mother mad!

I will also check out the rooms at Heartsworth House.

Steve and Judy-Yes she is beautiful!

Judy-Thanks for looking for the cookbook! Sometimes the antique stores have them if they are not selling them anymore. I sent an e-mail to the chamber but have not heard back. I am not holding my breath!

Does anyone remember that little booklet that was published in 1971 for the 100 anniversary of the founding of Vinita? It was written and printed by the publisher of the Journal of that time.

Paul-I think I have a copy of it at home. I will check it out later. It was written by OB Campbell I think it is called either Tales They Told or Vinita IT. He wrote several. Nancy Breeden also wrote one.
