JOHNNIE- DOES YOUR CAT GIVE YOU DIRTY LOOKS WHEN SHE'S UPSET WITH YOU? MY DOG DOES, I DON'T TAKE HER FOR A WALK SHE TAKES ME. WE MUST GO WHERE SHE WANTS TO GO AND NOT STOP UNTIL SHE'S READY TO STOP AND MUST GO BACK IN WHEN SHE'S READY. IF YOU TRY TO FORCE HER TO GO SOMEPLACE ELSE OR GO IN BEFORE SHE'S READY THAT'S WHEN SHE GIVES ME THE DIRTY LOOK AND IT LOOKS SO HUMAN IT'S SCAREY!DOES YOUR CAT HAVE ANY WEIRD QUIRKS?

Paul---Oh aint it true! LOL She likes to think that she owns this house lock, stock, and barrel. Rather than argue with her, I just let her think she does. She is happy. I am happy. LOL You know I just noticed something, the wife treats me the same way. ROFL!!!!

Lavanna--
No not really. She hates bein shut out of a room. She will plant her plump butt right in front of the door and begin some sort of opera...I think :) I cant hear (one of the advantages to being deaf) But the wife and daughter sure can. This can go on for hours...less the daughter gets up and plants a little wisdom to the seat of her learning. Then she will shut up. LOL I just roll over and go to sleep. Much the same she does me during the day.

Dang! Paul, I think you are right...I am trained..LMAO

Carla- I was thinking, since we aren't getting any younger, maybe we should have a class reunion every year on the fourth Saturday in July. Seriously, that way those who can't make it one year could maybe make it the next. Then on the 45th and of course the 50th year, have a big blowout.

By the way, it was Steven who suggested on this forum, that Bruce emcee the reunion, and I think Jan D seconded the motion.

JUDY-THAT'S A GREAT IDEA HAVING A REUNION EVERY YEAR I PLAN ON BEING THERE IN A COUPLE OF YEARS. STOPPING ON MY WAY BACK TO PHX. IT WOULD BE NICE TO SEE SOME OF YOU AGAIN. THE REUNION PICS LOOKED LIKE YOU HAD A FUN TIME.

I would like to see those of us who can, get together every year. I know it is a lot of work, but so enjoyable. Even though, I don't post much, I do enjoy reading what everyone else has to say. Bruce's speech was good. I spoke with Harvey Gatlin's daughter after the reunion and told her that her father was definitely remembered, as well as all the others that have passed on in our class. I thought the framed photograph of the "Gone but not Forgotten" was a good idea.

Judy, what's the reunion like during the rodeo? Does it draw many alumni? I think getting together yearly isn't a bad idea, and having it a specific date everyone can make plans around it. It's a thought anyway. I know when I looked at the pictures of the kids that are gone, it took my breath away. Thanks Judy (again) for doing just the right thing. And I can't remember if I have thanked Clarence and DeeAnn for the use of their beautiful pool house. We are painting THE ROOM, have to get back to it. Later.

The all-class school reunion during the rodeo is not well attended by our classmates from 1969, or too many others from the 70's and later. With age this may change, who knows?

I believe the reunion consists of having a Saturday afternoon gathering at the present high school, where the "50 year class" is recognized and I think the "50" class has a planned weekend of activities for their class. There also used to be an all-class reunion dance at the Country Club on Saturday night, but when the club closed, I think that ended.

For me, the timing is bad, it is a busy time for me. I have always been involved in the rodeo and have never been able to find the time to attend the reunion. I was once approached to help with it, but knew I could not make the commitment due to the rodeo.

This year the Calf Fry will be held in the morning and afternoon on the same Saturday as the Saturday night performance of the rodeo. I do not know what effect that will have on the reunion attendance.

Lavanna - Isn't it wonderful how God restores what man (people in general) may try to destroy! To think that you had leadership in you, all those years and now you are walking in part of your destiny! All I know is, although I'm blessed with good health, none of us know how long we have and I want my life to count and to contribute back before I check out of here.
Wayne and Carla - Oh My GOSH! Broken Arrow has grown! I started last Wed (know what you mean about inservice, Carla). I almost emailed Wayne about how to get to a school (don't have gps) that was close to where I thought he said he lived. I really thought there might have been a couple of new additions in the area - 51st and Omaha. Hello - I could not believe it - there is a reason there are new schools in that area. For all of BA - I can't even see what were my landmarks anymore, because it has built up so much. I will be at an old school close to downtown and at South Intermediate, so far, except for compliance meetings, I like it. Wayne, you probably knew what you were doing when you bought in the area! (I learned yesterday that I can't get on 51 east, from Lynn Lane - that cost a little time in rush hour).
Carla - I would love to see you when you come to town. On the hairdo's in the pictures - my mom must have admired Mamie Eisenhower, because it was her "do" she gave me. Tightly wound up bangs and hair curled up on the sides above my ears! Yikes - I shudder at the memory. Joni Driskill had the first "pixie" haircut that I was aware of and I wanted one so badly.
Speaking of Joni - Paul, why did you slap sweet little Joni? Did she tell Mrs White? I kind of remember the sled. I do remember Bruce and making a doll with a southern belle long skirt from paper (that really impressed me).
I guess art did impress me. I definitely remember a drawing of a striped, multi-colored horse drawn by Jimmy McLeary, his parent's had the bakery. He got in huge trouble because his horse wasn't a realistic color - I always liked my first grade teacher, except then. Jimmy was my deskmate, before Keith Dobbs.
Paul - I'm going to check out the latest "Our Town" video right now.

Jan - Are you going to sub this year?

08/08/09 07:24 PM #928

Lavanna M. Hawkins (Morgan)

MARY ANN- THANKS FOR THE NICE COMMENTS. MY DAD ALWAYS TOLD ME I'D NEVER AMOUNT TO A HILL OF BEANS, AND I WAS BOUND AND DETERMINED TO PROVE HIM WRONG. MY PARENTS ALSO TOLD ME I'D NEVER MARRY OR HAVE CHILDREN, BUT I PROVED THEM WRONG ABOUT THAT. I ALSO PROVED THEM WRONG ABOUT BEING SOMEONE. IN CHRIST I CAN DO ANYTHING, AND I HAVE BEEN DOING SERVICE FOR THE LORD FOR YEARS. EVERYTHING THAT CAME INTO MY LIFE MEANT FOR BAD, GOD HAS TURNED INTO GOOD. THAT'S WHY I HAVE FAITH IN HIM, HE NEVER FAILS.

Mary Ann - I had no memory of having done it until it was mentioned in the class history. I guess whoever compiled it had to find a way to get my name in there somehow and apparently Joni had the solution. Needless to say, I was rather appalled that the only way I was to be remembered was by someone's memory of my slapping them. Other than that, I always had the highest regard for Joni and was deeply saddened when I heard that she had died.

If you think about it, a rather amazing number of our class were in Mrs. White's kindergarden.

Mary Ann, you continue to make me smile. I love to read your memories and observations. Yes I plan on subbing, I enjoy the kids (such a small school) and for the most part I get along with the little darlings. My observation is- spanking isn't a bad thing, though not sure who should be spanked, the kids or the parents. When I think of you Mary Ann, I remember that your mom wouldn't let you go out until Billy Graham was over. Why did he have to come on a Sat. night. Geez Louise! But I did think having a mother who could wash your hair in a special sink, was the best. We washed each others head one day, and the shop also got washed. Mamie's hairdo, I always knew you reminded me of someone, now I know who.

Lavanna, I'm glad you're stronger now through the love of God.

Paul, I know Joni would feel awful that she made you slap her. I didn't join you guys until middle of the 4th grade, so I don't know about the "Early Years" I do remember when I got there though I wanted to slap Jan Nix cause she informed me that I couldn't be friends with Joni. Skinny little girls shouldn't make threats against chunky little girls. It just didn't work. I think about Joni alot and wish we had kept in touch thru the years, she was a good friend.

Johnnie, your room is about ready.

Have a good Sunday everyone.

Paul - Don't worry about the memory of having slapped Joni (which it probably was provoked, if I know 5 year olds). Actually, when I was that age, there was an older boy, who used to chase me on his bike to terrorize me. I made a plan. One day he came out of the alley and the chase began, only I stopped midway. I had an empty, glass coke bottle in my hand. I stepped aside and when he passed by, I hit him in the head with the bottle (I had seen it in one of the character building cartoons that we had at the time). His mother called mine and raised Cain and I got in trouble, but he never chased me again. I would like to say that I repented that day, but I've already made the incident with Eddy public. Maybe I had borderline personality disorder.
Anyway - who do you remember being in our kindergarten class?
Jan - I just had to bide my time, getting spiritual instruction, before I could drag Main. I wonder if an alien could have been observing Vinita on a Friday night in the 60's and saw the endless stream of cars parading in a circle - well it was enough to make them think there was no intelligent life in Vinita - so they tried Roswell. We were always on the eternal hunt for "boys".
I know what you mean about wanting to spank parents sometimes, but we just fill out another form or document and go on down the line (especially in special ed).
I probably won't check back in for a week as the little people will be returning this week!

Mary Ann - I only remember a few of the folks that attended Mrs. White's kindergarten. Joni, Barry Denny and you. I don't remember Bruce, but there were a few that went there who moved away later on in grade or high school.

Speaking of discipline, I was taking some pictures of Hall-Halsell grade school and got into conversation with one of the teachers who was outside. Apparently, they have 400 pupils and it's only K-3!!! She mentioned off the cuff, that meth was becoming an increasing problem, so I must assume that she was referring to the parents (I hope). It makes you wonder if the backlash against discipline as gone too far.

Paul- I believe they have a 3-year old and 4-year old pre-K program at Hall Halsell. I don't know if it is mandatory, but they have a big enrollment.

Also, a few years ago Lynnda Sooter was instrumental in creating a backpack food program for children in all the schools in the county. It seems alot of children were being flagged by their teachers as not having enough to eat at home, and coming to school hungry, so through this program, they are given non-perishable food items to take home. If the hungry children also have preschool siblings at home, they are provided with food to feed them also. That maybe what the teacher was alluding to concerning the meth. The children are the ones who suffer the consequences. The program is supported by community individuals and businesses donating funds or food items to keep the program going.

Mrs. White's Kindergarten was fun. Don't you guys remember our Xmas show "The Nutcracker"; Mark Elem was the Mouse King, Chuck Donaldson was the Nutcracker, I think Joni was Clara, I was one of the soldiers. Paul were you one of the other soldiers? Mary Ann you must have had a part?

HI GUYS- JUST THOUGHT I'D TELL YOU MY SISTER GOT HER HOSPITAL BILL THE OTHER DAY FROM GETTING THE DEFIBULATOR PUT IN AND IT CAME TO $160,000.00. THE DEFIBULATOR ALONE WAS $50,000.00. IT'S A GOOD THING SHE'S GOT REALLY GOOD INSURANCE.
I HAD AN EXPERIENCE I HADN'T HAD SINCE I LIVED IN OKLAHOMA, WE HAD SEVERE WEATHER WITH A TORNADO WARNING. THE TORNADO DIDN'T SIT DOWN HERE BUT IT DID ABOUT 100 MILES AWAY. IT RIPPED UP TREES AND TOOK THE SIDING OFF A HOUSE, AND TORE DOWN A COMMUNICATION TOWER. IT WAS ONLY A F-1, AND I WAS FRANTIC, BUT MY FRIEND BOB AND HIS SON JUST SAT THERE AND SAID "SO"! THEY HAVEN'T HAD A TORNADO HERE IN A LONG TIME, THAT IS, NONE THAT HE COULD EVEN REMEMBER. I TOLD HIM, GOOD THING YOU DON'T LIVE IN OKLAHOMA, BECAUSE WHEN THEY SAY TORNADO WARNING, YOU BETTER HEAD FOR COVER. I FELT LIKE I WAS BACK HOME AGAIN. EVERY SUMMER MY DAD WOULD RUN US DOWN TO THE CELLAR EVEN IF IT WAS JUST RAINING. ONE TIME WE WERE HEADING FOR THE CELLAR WHEN I LOOKED UP JUST AS LIGHTENING STRUCK, AND I SAW 8 FUNNEL CLOUDS OVER OUR HOUSE. WELL I TOOK OFF FOR THE CELLAR ALRIGHT.

Bruce - what a memory. Yes, I remember doing the Nutcracker now and I was one of the soldiers. Mark Elam is a name I haven't seen in a very long time. What happened to him?

Lavanna - I have lots of memories of tornadoes when I was growing up. Since my folks worked for the phone company, when there was a siren, we went to the shelter in the basement of the telephone office downtown. I saw at least three funnel clouds and it became rather ho-hum. When I went to college, I was always amused how terrified the out of state kids where when there was a tornado alert.

PAUL- AT ONE TIME I LIVED AND WORKED IN TULSA. ONE SUMMER AFTERNOON I DECIDED TO GO VISIT MY SISTER IN BUSHYHEAD, WHEN I GOT OUT ON THE HIGHWAY I LOOKED TO MY RIGHT AND THERE FOLLOWING ME WAS A FUNNEL CLOUD, A WHITE ONE. IT WAS ON THE GROUND AND IT FOLLOWED ME ALL THE WAY TO MY SISTER'S. WHEN I PULLED UP IN THE DRIVEWAY, I SAID, THERE'S A TORNADO COMING AND WITHIN MINUTES IT HAD HIT. WE ALL RAN INTO THE HALLWAY, AND ALL AROUND HER HOME IT WAS BLACK AS NIGHT, ALL YOU COULD HEAR WAS THE SOUND OF A TRAIN. IT DIDN'T HIT HER HOME, BUT IT SURE DID ALOT OF DAMAGE TO THE PROPERTY. AFTER GOING THROUGH THAT NO TORNADO WARNING IS HO-HUM TO ME.

Lavanna, If there were no tornadoes in Okla it would be really dull. You must have felt right at home. Glad to hear things are working out for you and your family. At the Reunion I asked Victor Smith about the body floating in the creek next to Riverside School and he verified the whole story.
Paul, Mark's family moved to Salt Lake City when we entered the 6th grade. I contacted him in 1971 when I was traveling through there and we had a good visit. Additionally, we exchanged email while researching our respective reunions.

Bruce - since you have such a good memory, who do you remember at Mrs. White's kindergarten?

08/11/09 09:29 PM #940

Lavanna M. Hawkins (Morgan)

BRUCE- I'M GLAD VICTOR BACKED ME UP ON THAT STORY BECAUSE I GOT THE IMPRESSION NOBODY BELIEVED ME. I SURE DIDN'T RECOGNIZE VICTOR, IF I HAD SEEN HIM ON THE STREET I WOULDN'T HAVE KNOWN HIM. YOU ARE RIGHT, WITHOUT THE TORNADOES EVERY SUMMER OKLAHOMA WOULD BE VERY BORING. YES, I DID FEEL RIGHT AT HOME, TOO MUCH AT HOME, I HATE STORMS. WE HAVE HAD ALOT OF RAIN THIS YEAR AND COOL TEMPS. IT HAS FINALLY STARTED FEELING LIKE SUMMER AND IT'S AUGUST.
