Musical Memories

When we were in high school, we "rocked around the clock" and had no doubt that rock and roll was here to stay.  Many of us watched Dick Clark's "American Bandstand" regularly to see teens in Philly dancing to the latest tunes.  We Washingtonians had "The Milt Grant Show."  Some bands and singers from the late '50's and early '60's were one-song wonders, while others achieved lasting fame and fortune.  Musical hits from our era are now considered to be "golden oldies!"

The most popular recorded songs of 1961 in the U.S. were as follows:

  • Wonderland by Night  - by Bert Kaempfert
  • Will You Love Me Tomorrow - by The Shirelles
  • Calcutta -  by Lawrence Welk
  • Pony Time -  by Chubby Checker
  • Surrender  - by Elvis Presley
