Bruce Smith (September 28, 1941 - January 9, 2015)

Bruce Arthur Smith, 73, died after a courageous battle with cancer; he was born in Oakland, ME to Arthur G. smith and Bettina M. Smith.

He spent his early childhood in Nahant and Wakefield, MA, and in Webster Groves, MO. He graduated from Webster Groves High School and The University of the South in Sewanee, TN in 1963; then he received a law degree from Vanderbilt University. He served in the U.S. Navy as First Lieutenant aboard the U.S.S. America aircraft carrier. Since then, he lived in Washington, MO; Ft. Lauderdale, FL; and most recently in Lake Lure, NC.

Bruce wore many hats. He was a lawyer, a designer, and an artist. He was very involved in his church, was a spiritual volunteer for Hospice and was a Eucharist Lay-minister after receiving training in theology at The University of the South in 1999. He was active in art groups wherever he lived.

He is survived by his two sisters, Bettina Wilke (husband Wayne) and Barbara Urso (husband Robert); nieces, Robin Harding and Angela Urso; and nephew, Jonathan Wilke.

A memorial service will be 3 PM on Wednesday January 14, 2015 at The Church of the Transfiguration in Bat Cave, NC, where he was a member.  Family suggests contributions can be made to The Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration, PO Box 130, Bat Cave, NC 28710.

Bruce was buried in Cowen Cemetery, Cowen Ridge Road, in Sidney, Kennebec County, ME in the same plot as his parents.

Bruce was buried near his parents in Cowan Cemetery, located in Sidney, Kennebec County, Maine.  The following obituary appeared in local newspaper in the North Carolina town where he was living at the time of his death.
