In Memoriam

James Robert Bickel

Jim Bickel (November 21, 1941 - February 18, 2024)

We received notice four months ago about Jim's death from his daughter, Mary Bickel, but just now learned about the memorial service scheduled at 2:00 on the afternoon of Friday, July 5, 2024 at the Warren's Branch Baptist Church, 9166 Antelope Road, Seneca, MO 64865. (It's located in the SW corner of the state, less than 10 miles from Joplin.) Mary stated if anyone wants further information to please contact her: marybickel2@gmail.com.

There is no published obituary, but Mary informed us that Jim passed away after a lengthy fight with abdominal cancer. He was an electrical engineer for Delco Electronics in Milwaukee, but was transferred to their Santa Barbara, CA location in 1973. After retiring from Delco, he worked a decade or so at Karl Storz Imaging.

Jim loved spending time in the outdoors, from the desert to the mountains, and his family was able to take him on one final trip to the Sierras last November. (Above photograph was taken on that trip.)

Surviving are his wife, Martha Bickel; daughter Mary Bickel; daughter Sherry Bickel Albaugh and her husband Scott Albaugh; grandson Bane Albaugh; and granddaughter Jessica Albaugh.

(Mary also sent us the photographs included on this page.)

It is with great sadness that acknowledge  the passing of one of my best high school friends and four year college room mate. Jim and I shared several different residences at Mizzou from 1959 through 1963. We both returned to St. Louis after graduation where Jim worked on the Gemini space project. From there we took different paths. Jim ending up in Santa Barbara and me in Dallas.

Jim was one of most intelligent individuals I have ever known. An accomplished classical guitiarist in college Jim also enjoyed playing basketball which we did often during high and college. Thus he earned the nickname "The Phallanges" for his ability to palm a basketball and play the quitiar.

My condolences to Martha and his girls with the regret that, because of distance, we never had the opportunity to know and enjoy a relationship with our families.

With sadness,

Charles Nies
