Washington U. tennis legend Johnson dies: St. Louisan Jerry Johnson, Washington University’s first tennis All-American, died Tuesday, June 1st, at age 79 after a long battle with Parkinson’s. In four years at WU, he compiled a 63-6 record in singles and 55-5 in doubles, winning four conference singles titles along the way. At Webster Groves High, Johnson won four state doubles titles with three different partners.

Later, he and Bill Heinbecker were the top doubles team in St. Louis tennis in the ‘60s and into the ‘70s. Johnson was inducted into the St. Louis Tennis Hall of Fame in 2003.

A funeral Mass is set for 9 a.m. Thursday at St. Bernadette Church in Lemay.
