Sandra - the round building was the dugout for awhile, remember they were like a ball park and they served "ballgame food"! Can't remember the name of the club but remember there was one for a time in the old Mint club in that old strip mall on seneca that is now KFC/Pizza Hut area. Remember when the McDonald's there on seneca and pawnee was a walk up only? Thanks for taking me back...nice break on a Friday afternoon.

WOW Sandy - what a great memory you have and thanks for the walk down memory lane!! The old Lazy R was next door to the round bldg. The old Lazy R has been a Mexican restaurant now for years.
I've been showing a lot of repos lately on the south side. Each house, I wonder who lived here back in the day?? I'm sure those homes have a lot of happy memories locked into their walls!

Carrie- I'm not surprised about the repos in the south area. It breaks my heart when I drive down my old street - Gold - and see how it has deteriorated over the years. We moved in to our house in 1963 and my mom moved out in 1999 and into a senior residence. Only a few of the neighbors were the ones I had grown up with. The strip malls have all gone to #$%@ too. Remember when Seneca square had all the plants and the lower level club etc.? Lots of us played pool at the Copper Cue where the Dillons is. Cut more than one class there..

Carrie Alford (Loofs)

OMG - I had completely forgotten about the Copper Cue!! Remember Peter Pan? I remember as a very small child there was Peter Pan and a little greasy spoon restaurant on the other side! That was when Dillons was next to Dockum's(?), I think that was the name of the drug store. Fair shoes was next to that. Seneca Square? When ever I had a dental appt that required a filling, my mother would then take me (after) to the drug store soda shop for a choco malt!! Those times were awesome!!!

I tried to picture that area in my mind when I was young. The copper cue was next to Safeway.
Across the street to the east was Connaco gas station. Just north of there was Texaco gas station.
After Texaco it was Dairy Queen now Wallgreens. TG&Y was the best place to buy toys at Senaca Square.
Before Quick Trip there was a Shopease a little further down 31st going west. Bought a lot of Icees
and candy at that place. Also at 31st and Waco was the B&L Market. There was a butcher named Bill
who had some of the best meat in town in that little store. Did everybody forget about Shakeys Pizza
with the player piano and those huge ballons with feet?
South Wichita was a great place to grow up.

Brent

Ah....I loved the player piano and banjo at Shakee's Pizza! We went all the time!!!!!!

Brent, I SO remember B&L or as we called it "the little store"! I remember you all lived down Benway near Debbie Odle and I lived on Gold where Benway stopped. Remember Sim Elementary? My mom was the lunch lady for a while and everyone thought she was so mean...(she was pretty tough!) Remember Rocky falling and breaking both arms on the new jungle gym at Sim? Blankenships lived right in there on Benway too right? And yes the Peter Pan - used to walk up there for Ice Cream during the summer. Remember REC at Sim elementary during the summer? And did anybody go to TARP at Osage? Wow, how fun it is to think of all this old stuff! Awww, yea, the balloon guys at Shakeys with the feet, almost forgot about them! I haven't been to another pizza place that smelled quite like Shakeys to this day either.

Yes the Blankenships moved onto Benway when Eric and I were about four years old. Its been nearly twenty years since Coy passed away. I still miss him alot. REC at Sim school was the best time you could have between 9:00 and noon. Always had a 10 cent cherry cola at 10:30. My cousin (coach Bobbitt) is retiring from teaching this year at South. You are right about the aroma inside Shakeys. Nobody I know of has ever duplicated that smell.
Take care

WOW - great memories! Shakey's was the first pizza I think I ever had. I remember that place seemed to be huge.
TARP at Osage??? OMG - that was terrifying to me!!! Remember they would MAKE you dance with someone?? Horrifying for a shy child!! The pool at Osage is gone now, replaced by a little water fountain park. I remember walking to the pool in the summer time barefoot!! Dang, that tar was HOT and then the grass would be burned up and feel like needles on the bottom of our feet!! Too bad our kids can't experience such things.

Cheryl Wolfe (Wyckoff)

Carrie- thats HILLARIOUS about Osage and the tar and grass! But SO true! I was terrified of that pool and took swim lessons there twice and come to find out it was only like 5 foot deep! I still don't swim I just flail around and keep my head above water. Didn't realize they had replaced the pool with the fountian thing. Cool.

Carrie and Jeff,
You two are just way too much entertainment for one evening. Carrie, I hope you have some white boots to wear to the reunion.

Elaine VonFeldt (Sauder)

Carrie- I remember Ms. Knolla at Kelly. She was absolutely the coolest teacher ever, and I had her for 5th and 6th grade (because she changed grades). You guys are really bringing back a lot of great memories.

06/02/09 09:20 AM #54

Carrie Alford (Loofs)

Hey all! OMG - wear just above the ankle white boots to the reunion??? Lari - if you'll come, I'll find some boots!! How about that for a challenge?
Elaine - Miss Knolla is still teaching, married/divorced and had 2 sons. Talk about a teacher who really cared AND made a difference. How lucky you were to of had her for 2 years. Remember her green Camero? I remember in the 5th grade learning about the human body. We each got to draw for a body system. I drew the Reproductive System and just wanted to die right there!!! There was no way, no how was I gonna get up in front of our class and talk about women's va-j-j's and men's pp's! We were only 11 yrs old. I think I threatened to run away from home, mom called Miss Knolla and the next day my "report" changed to the pituitary gland! ;D

Lari Floyd (Prilliman)

I had Mrs. Shellhammer for 5th grade and apparently missed out on all the fun stuff to do. Do any of you remember her??
