John James Burgess, 72, LaFayette

John James "Jay" Burgess, of LaFayette, Ga., went home to be with his Lord and Savior Saturday, Dec. 24, 2016, surrounded by his loving family. He was 72.

He was born in St. Louis, Miss., to the late John Basil and Viola Ruth Rolph Burgess. Jay grew up in Wichita, Kan. before moving to the North Georgia area and was of the Methodist faith.

He was an Air Force veteran having served during the Vietnam War and retired from the Air National Guard.

He was an avid reader and historian. He enjoyed running, writing science fiction, traveling and photography. He had a passion for computers and was employed with the City of Chattanooga for more than 20 years as a computer operations specialist.

He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather who will be truly missed by all who knew him.

He was also preceded in death by two nephews, Brent Tice and Teddy Tice.

Survivors include: His loving wife of more than 48 years, Sue Shaw Burgess of LaFayette; sons, John Victor (Blakely Campbell) Burgess of LaFayette and James Shaw Burgess of Ringgold, Ga.; sisters, Sharon Koschar and Janice Miller both of Ohio and Virginia and (Larry) Tice of Mississippi; five grandchildren, Tatum, Mallorie, Connor, Eric and Henry Burgess and numerous beloved nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.

Funeral services: Wednesday, Dec. 28, at 11 a.m. in the LaFayette Chapel.

Burial: Coulter Cemetery.
