Matthew Charles Szechenyi

Matthew Charles Szechenyi, 74, of Millwood, Va., passed away peacefully August 19, 2018, surrounded by family. He was born January 4, 1944, the youngest of seven children, at Aranyospuszta, Barcs, Hungary. The family fled Hungary to Austria and then came to the United States in 1949, settling in Asheville, N.C.

Matt was a lifelong Catholic and member of the Knights of Columbus. After graduating from Georgetown University, he began a career in enterprise software sales. He had a wonderful sense of humor and many talents and interests, including music, and antique car restoration. In recent years Matt and his wife Catherine enjoyed being active with their two Vizslas and were beekeepers.

Matt was a devoted father and grandfather. Survivors include his wife, Catherine, five children, Kristi Perry of Dover, Ma., Matthew Szechenyi, Jr. of Boyce, Va., Katie Manheimer of Winchester, Va., Gregory Szechenyi of Roanoke, Va., and Jeremy Szechenyi of Avon, Conn. He had seven grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

His loving nature, contagious laughter and mischievous sense of humor will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Viszla Club of America Welfare Foundation. A memorial celebration will be held at a later date.
