David was born on July 18, 1948, in Morehead City, North Carolina, to Audrey King Goodwin and James Albert Goodwin. He grew up in Havelock, North Carolina, and after graduating from high school, he joined the Air Force in July of 1968. He did his basic training in San Antonio, Texas, and then went to technical school at Chanute Air Force Base in Illinois. In 1971, he married the love of his life, Patty Yeager. They had two children, Lisa and Karen. The family traveled with him as he fulfilled his duties with the Air Force. His first assignment was in Charleston, South Carolina. After that, they lived in Dover, Delaware. Then, from 1981 to 1984, he was stationed at Rhein Main Air Force Base, Germany. In 1984, they moved to Oklahoma City, where he resided for the rest of his life.

David obtained an Associate's Degree through the Community College of the Air Force. During his career in the Air Force, he achieved the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. He retired from the Air Force in 1993 after 26 years of service. Not one to slow down, he started a new career as a contractor at FAA, then Tinker Air Force Base. His final retirement was in January of 2016.

He spent the last five years with his family working on the family property in Wannette, riding on his tractor, going through countless chainsaws, renovating a 1920's home for a family haven, while fishing as much as he could. Family was the most important thing to David. He was a loving husband, father, and grandpa. He had an easy smile and was a friend to all.
