Life Tributes

George Johnson

George Ray Johnson of Hot Springs, Arkansas passed away on Monday, June 5, 2017 after a five-year battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP).  He left this life much too early, at the age of 65.  He is survived by his wife Norma Johnson of Hot Springs, daughter and son-in-law, Erin and Edward Benson of Austin, and precious grandson, Trey Benson.  He also leaves a sister, Sandra Johnson, of Bryant, Arkansas.  He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Cecil and Noreen Johnson, and sister Patricia.

George was born in Galveston, Texas and spent most of his youth in Freeport, Texas.  He attended Brazosport High School where he played football and graduated with the Class of 1970.  He also graduated from Texas State University (Southwest Texas) in San Marcos where he obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree.

His working life took him to many places.  He spent several years in the trucking industry, taught U.S. History for both Junior High and High School students, and worked as an employment counselor in Anchorage, Alaska.  His most enjoyable time was spent as a white-water rafting guide in Costa Rica where he was able to be where he loved the most, outdoors.

Although his illness curtailed many of his retirement plans, his adult life did afford him many wonderful experiences.  He and his wife traveled through much of the United States enjoying hiking, camping, and spending time at the beach.  He loved sharing his life adventures and was known to his teacher friends as “the storyteller”.  He will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him.

Oh, I am so very sorry for this loss but certain of George's destination -- may he rise in glory. George had the kindest heart of any young man I've ever known. So glad he had a life of adventure. See you again, friend.

George was a quiet and very good-natured individual who never seemed to have anything negative to say about anyone. I am sorry to hear that he suffered from a disease that robbed him of activity out of doors.  He alway had a smile on hit face and will be missed.

George Johnson, one of the nice guys!  I do not recall him speaking negatively about anyone..  Which is unheard of in high school. Rest in Peace my friend
