Les, in his spiffy vest and with his umbrella, sat by me in our Sophomore home room in the balcony of the Auditorium and held my hand as we heard about the Cuban Missile Crisis. My homeroom friend for whom I wrote all of his excuse notes (!) and later to become my dear boyfriend at ECU, Les taught me how to drive in an icy snow, how to create meals out of odd refrigerator contents, took me to my first liquor store when I turned 21, and with Carl Rothrock and Becky Kearns, drove us on our adventurous escape from campus in the wake of the assassination of MLK. Although I have thought of him often and fondly through the years, I let those years pass in silence and now my heart is broken. He was a quietly marvelous person.
I think Sally died in 2007.
Hi Rita I believe Sally developed diabetes and that it contributed to her death....I couldn't find her obit, though I remember seeing it at the time. I last saw her in the '90s and she was her same smiling self. I think she had two children with her, but couldn't swear to it.
Remember our 8th grade OLG trip to Raleigh? Sally had brought some mercury and when she rolled it around in her hand, it had some chemical reaction with her rings! Whatever nun or parent was there was not amused. She had that ability to get the nuns' habits in a wad.
Jerry, your comments about Don jogged my memory. I befriended him when he was the the ranger at Hagen Stone when he and his family lived there before going to Battleground. Had no idea that we had been at Grimsley together until your comment. What a curious realization.
Donna, I remember your mom's fabric store on High Point Rd. (newly renamed Gate City Blvd!) where she helped me pick out the right fabric for MidWinter's Dance and prom. And...your fabulous photo spread in the paper 'decorating' the opening of the new intersection split between Market and Friendly. Hunter George was interning at the newspaper and asked me who would be great for his idea....I chose you!!
Hope you had a great time at the reunion.

Bummer about the weather...wasn't going to attend this reunion (I've been to three previous ones) because of a planned beach trip, but now that's postponed. Oh well... Y'all have fun without me!
Here's a photo of the 1964-65 GHS cheerleaders from the paper! Was in some old clippings in my mom's stash.
Not coming to the reunion, but really enjoying this site - good job, committee!
Per Arne - do you remember beach weekend at Sally Hall's parent's place in Myrtle Beach? I did such a fabulous swan dive into the canal, but nobody remembers my diving form, only the fact that the top of my swimsuit snapped off - my first ever boob flash!
Wish you could make it - I'd even rearrange my schedule to be there to see you.
btw - does your daughter get asked a lot of questions? (sorry - bad i-phone joke)
Chip and I were in Mrs. Wilder's homeroom (which had some great kids!) for our years at Grimsley. I thought he was, in the vernacular of the times, 'a dreamboat' but never said a word. Who did he date then???
Ray's mother was Italian and she drove a Jaguar XKE, so he came by sportscars naturally. He was one of the OLG gang and a huge part of my childhood. Does anyone know when and where he died??
As I recall, Steve died in In an accident in Africa fairly soon after we graduated... certainly the first one of us to, as WC Bryant put it, 'join the innumerable caravan' His death was a was a shock. He was such a fun guy and could have contributed so much to the world.
