I remember Dan as an engaging guy. While but an infrequent friend, he seemed to always be interested in my thoughts. He was gregarious in disposition, warm in indifference yet eager to hear what I had to say and what was happening.
And here again, time takes it's measure of us 65ers. Let us all embrace the good in others that we may have disrespected or disagreed with in high school but were nonetheless, an intregral part of our youth. They presented either opportunity or challenges thst in either case, helped frame the person we came to be.
Rest in peace, Dan.

For all of us there is a tale or perhaps many to tell of our friendships with our classmates and this one perhaps Bill Simpson has related about Dan. A nice warm Thursday night to cruse downtown , bumper to bumper and the sidewalks lined with those you knew, or knew of, and there were Schwarze and Morris in the farm Jeep . It was like Mardi Gras except they had brought eggs to toss at their friends instead of beads .  Jeff Green was on the sidewalk and he said an egg hit at his feet .  At that moment they  happend to come up behind my old Jeep and tossed one toward Bill and I . Not to be outdone I threw the Jeep in reverse and crashed into the front of their Jeep; This continued all the way thought town playing bumper cars , Jeeps crasheing forward and back.  The game saw on, we chased each other around town and eventually Bill and I lost them in the dark. We pulled into Foster Freeze on Lincolin and got out to talk to the owner, Vern. I can still see this next moment as if it was frozen in time.  From way across the corned of Brown I see their Jeep pull up and an egg flying from a good 50 yards away and its' perfect curve hits Bill right in the forehead . Vern actually broke into laughter ,  One of the many memories of Dan ,  Dan you will be so missed but never forgotten.

Yes, I was there the night Dan and Walt butted heads, with their Jeeps. And what a sight it was! Walt's rig was westbound in front of Dan's waiting for a traffic light to change when all hell broke loose. Dan or Mike Morris had just thrown an egg at me and missed. I was on the sidewalk between Partrick's and the Napa Toy Store. The next thing I knew, Dan rammed his Jeep into the rear of Walt's. Bang! Walt's and Bill Simpson's heads were thrown backward like crash test dummies, but no one was injured. Then Walt rammed Dan. Bang! This cycle repeated until the light changed and everyone drove on. Meanwhile, traffic on the sidewalks halted as shoppers gaped at the improptu demolition derby. Grown men wept. Mother's shielded their babies' eyes to protect them from the carnage. Junior-high kids fled screaming into the night. Shopkeepers stood frozen looking out the windows of their stores, mouths open and strangely twisted in confusion and fright. Poets began writing epic accounts of the event. Or not. You had to be there.
Dan and I shared one class during our senior year, history taught by the venerable Cox Thornton, father of our classmate Cox. Mr. Thornton had a Southern-like accent, told puns even cornier than those told by Bill Simpson, and mangled Dan's last name, calling him "Mr. Schwazz." You don't forget stuff like that. And you never forget guys like Dan, who was a wild and crazy high-school kid, especially when he teamed-up with his good friend Mike Morris, which was just about always back then. Always doing incredible things, always cracking me up. So goodbye, Dan. God bless and good luck.
