Robert was an A2C stationed at Rhein Main AB in 1956-1957 as an aircraft engine mechanic. He was a member of a recovery and repair team that traveled in theatre to repair broken down aircraft in Europe. After serving in the Air Force, he returned to civilian life, living in Tennessee, Arkansas, Alaska and Canada. He was mostly self-employed in the maintenance, installation, design and engineering of home and industrial air conditioning and heating systems. He and his brother, Jerry, also an Air Force veteran, are buried near each other in the national cemetery in Corinth, MS.
