Calabash, NC 
If you have the time, this old fishing village is a MUST see.
Most people have seen - Calabash Style Restaurants.  
This is where it all began. 
A fisherman was always hungry after returning from a day of commercial fEishing and there was no place to eat. One day, he set up a small grill and fried some fish and shrimp. It sold out immediately. 
Next day, he brought brought more fish and shrimp. He sold out again.
Each day, he kept selling more and more. I think he was the one that opened the 
Original Beck's Seafood Restaurant.  (The original building burnt down, but it was rebuilt)

Calabash was named after the gourds that grew in the region,^[6] which were used for drinking well water.^[7] Since the 1930s, Calabash has been known for its distinctive style of fried seafood, which has come to be known as "Calabash Style."^[8] The New York Times reported in 1983 that Calabash had 32 restaurants and about 180 residents. 40 years later, the number of restaurants was about the same but the town had around 2,000 residents.^[9] Calabash style buffets are common in many eastern Carolina coastal towns. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, is home to a large number of these restaurants, as the city is just 25 miles (40 km) from Calabash.

While in Calabash, you must stop at the world famous: 
Callahan's of Calabash  - Christmas store, but has a little of everything.
Rite across the street from Beck's Seafood Restaurant.

Calabash is located, just as you cross into North Carolina on Hwy 17 North.
