Larry W. Smith May 26, 1951 - July 31, 2010 Larry Wayne Smith, 59, of Grand Rapids, formerly of Union City, died unexpectedly at his home on Saturday, July 31, 2010. He was born May 26, 1951 in Coldwater to Wayne L. and Ruth (Lindsey) Smith. He was preceded in death by his father and is survived by his mother, Ruth, sisters; Beverly (Dave) Osburn, Lonna (Jerry) Burch, brother; Jack (LaDonna) Smith, along with several nieces and nephews.
After graduating from Union City High School in 1969, Larry attended Michigan State University, graduating in 1973 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He was employed by a variety of nationally known companies, working all over the United States on various projects to develop advanced electronic technology, including auto-dialing systems, hands-free cell phone components and several musical instruments. Recently Larry had started his own company, Advanced Music Technology in Grand Rapids.
A very talented musician, Larry had played in several local bands, as well as touring bands and studio bands in Nashville, TN. He won several national competitions, he was an accomplished dobro player and especially enjoyed Blue Grass music.
There will be a gathering of family and friends with a luncheon, Friday, August 6 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. at the Athens VFW #5319 in Athens. Larry has been cremated and a private interment in the Burlington Cemetery will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ladies Auxiliary of Athens VFW #5319.
