George went to the University of Texas after McCallum and then became a very successful film critic (he wrote for Texas Monthly and the Village Voice in New York). He published several books of film biography and also was asked to teach at the New School in New York. He had an avid following of students and admirers and was very popular with film critics around the country for his insights and clear analyses of directors, style and performances. He is survived by his sister, Nancy.
