Derek graduated from Law School and became a Special More…Agent with the FBI. He is now a Supervisory SA over the Fraud & Public Corruption unit in Fort Worth. After ten years, and being too near flying bullets a couple of times, he “retired” from the FBI and joined the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) in Sep 2019 as an Investigating Attorney.

Matt played basketball for KU as an invited walk-on player; they wanted his 6’ 10” height to practice against several players who are now in the NBA. He became an architect and taught on an adjunct basis at KU. They offered him the opportunity to get his PhD so he can teach full-time. Matt is ABD on his PhD and joined Children’s Mercy Hospital as a full-time Researcher. KU reduced tenure positions in Architecture from 15 to 6.

Whit graduated from KU Med School in May 2017 and is in Residency in Dallas. As a 3rd year Resident, she is working 80 hours per week, delivering babies and caring for GYN COVID-19 patients (as of 3/23/2020). Thom Kempf asks: Hey class, I want to take us all back to 1967-68. What was your favorite type of car in high school, and what did you learn to drive on?

I had a black 1963 Chevrolet Corvair coupe with red vinyl interior with a 3-speed manual transmission. I think it cost $400.

To save a story for younger generations about what life was like when you were young, what was different, what stories would you tell?

One of my fondest memories is of riding my bike (3 miles?) from near Highland Park Elementary to Sunset (?) Lake, north of Sunset C.C., to fish. I could be gone for hours. As long as my parents could find me there and as long as I was home for supper, all was okay. I had a paper route by then, so I was probably about 13 or 14.

Later, I drove my 1964 Corvair Coupe. It was black with red vinyl interior and had a four cylinder engine with a 3-speed manual shift. I wish I still had that car!

Tell a story about your first crush.

Our first grade teacher, Miss Metcalf, told me I would have kiss her at the front of the class “if you kiss Miss Kleinscmidt again”.

Who did / do you have a secret crush on?

Becky C.
Holly W.
Ann H.

Tell a story about a person in your life who inspires you.

Most of the above

What’s the one thing that made you leave, stay, move to or return to your current or different town?

College. I went to OSU, then Concordia Senior College, then OU, then OSU, graduating in 1975.

When have you been most satisfied in your life?

Since I married, and especially since we had kids, every day. My family is my wealth and my happiness!!

Tell the story of a random act of kindness you witnessed or initiated.

I don’t carry a lot of cash; but, whenever I see a homeless vet or homeless mother, I give whatever I do have. Sometimes, I will buy something to eat and/or drink with my debit card and give it to them.

Tell a story about your first (or subsequent) job.

I had a paper route when I was 12.

Tell the story of the most unusual place you've been, celebrated a birthday or holiday.

We were on a Caribbean cruise that stopped in Haiti. We were rather uncomfortable there.

Tell a story about the one that got away, or how you ended up with the one who didn't.

I was engaged to someone who attended College High School while we were seniors. ?

When she dropped out of college after one semester to work full-time, she wanted to get married the next summer. I broke up with her during the second semester and found a summer job in central Oklahoma, working on a farm.

Four years later, I had a blind date with Lesa Brewer, and we have been together ever since.

Tell a story about an ancestor.

A very distant great grandfather was the Exchequer of England. He had a castle in Scotland and was a member of the King’s Privy Council.

Tell the story behind your name or nickname.

One of my maternal great grandfathers was John Calvin Armstrong. My mother wanted to honor him by naming me after him.

Tell the story of a first or memorable kiss.

What are you proudest of?

People ask Lesa and me what we did so that our kids would turn out so well. D has a JD and is doing very well in the FBI. M is getting his PhD in Architecture. W is getting her MD May 2017.

As of July 2020, D completed 10 years with the FBI and joined the SEC in October 2019. M is ABD on his PhD and is working as a full-time Researcher in public health for a KU Med School/Children’s Mercy Hospital joint project. W is in her fourth year of an OBGYN Residency and is interviewing for a MFM Fellowship.

Tell us a story about a memorable moment in your life.

When I married my wife and when each of my three kids was born.

How do you picture God? What do you believe God is like?

I believe God is a Spirit that started what we see, turned it lose to run according to the Natural Laws thereby put in motion, and intervened in rather limited ways. I believe that Jesus is the Son of God. (I think of him as like a Demigod as described by the Greeks; His Father is God, and Mary is his mother.) I think that Mary and Joseph had subsequent children, and I think it is likely that Jesus had a wife and children.

I also think that, in His or Her wisdom, God may present Herself or Himself in different ways to different people. Yahweh to the Jews, of course. Allah to the Muslims. Perhaps Buddha to the Buddhists. There are so many common threads that run through their scriptures that it wouldn’t surprise me.

I have observed over and over and over again that old “white” men have written history, including the Books of the Bible (and the scriptures of other religions), in a way that affirms their “rightness”, “correctness”, and control of societies around the world from era to era; and it has to stop.

As I am writing this, President Joe Biden announced that he is withdrawing from the Presidential campaign and endorsing VP Kamala (pronounced comma-la) Harris to be the Democratic nominee. I think this is the correct decision. Don Trump is a horrible person. I have known this ever since I had the opportunity to review a possible loan participation for a large Kansas City bank. I recommended against it because it was obvious that he was (and is) dishonest. Fortunately, the bank listened to me, and it avoided a huge loss when the Trump Organization filed bankruptcy, regarding that enterprise.

There is a reason why no bank in America will loan money to Don Trump or his organization. Rumor has it that only Deutsche Bank would lend to him and only after Russian oligarchs, who are huge depositors there, threatened to withdraw there funds, which would have caused a run on that bank. I think Trump is in the oligarchs’ pockets, and they are in Putin’s pocket.

Do you believe in God?

YES, and I regard myself as a Christian; but I struggle with the concept of a Triune God. I try to love the Lord my God (God the Father, Yahweh, Allah) with my whole mind, heart, soul, and strength; and I try to love my neighbor as I love myself.

I think that God created the current Universe about 12.5,million years ago in what is commonly known as the Big Bang, that Earth was first formed 4.5 million years ago, and that (S)He created the human species through evolution that included Neanderthals, Homo Erectus, and several other hominid species.

I know that we are on track to eliminate the human species through man made Global Warming. It’s only a matter of time unless we stop using fossil fuels and we start reversing the inexorable increase in average temperature.

Happy Birthday, Brad! I hope all is well.

I fell off a ladder (a few years ago) and tore a rotator cuff and a bicep muscle. Gave my Calkaways to my tall daughter-in-law. Oh well.

Anyone hear of a Macular Hemorrhage? I have one. I was concerned that it might be the start of a retinal detachment; but a vitreous membrane, which is pulling on my retina, causes growth of new blood vessels that bleed. “It should resolve itself within a couple of months,” says my MD. TMI? Anyway, if you look at an Amsler Grid, which you should do occasionally, my R eye sees perfectly straight horizontal and vertical lines. My L eye sees wavy lines and a light gray patch in the lower left quadrant of the grid. Your eyesight is irreplaceable. Keep an eye on it.
