In the summer of 2010, doctors found that the lymphoma had returned and that she had also developed acute leukemia as a complication of the lymphoma. Although different treatments were tried, her health slowly declined and she had numerous hospitalizations.

She was able to be at home through the Christmas holidays and her children visited her several times in the months before she died, and while she was still able to enjoy their company.

She sold out to her partner in 2000, moving to Gardnerville Nevada, and then to Phoenix six years ago,  where the warmer climate made her arthritis more bearable,

In addition to her husband Lee, Lu Ann is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Corritore and her son John (Jenn) Protain, both of whom live in Reno. She is also survived by stepchildren Mike, Nancy, and Cindy, as well as seven grandchildren. Surviving siblings include Jack (Ines) Long, Lisa (Bob) Shell, Liz Long, Steve (Sandy) Long, and Lori Long.

She was predeceased by her older brother Michael S. Long in 2005, also to cancer.

A memorial service was held in Reno on July 14, 2011 and her ashes were placed in a beautifully located cemetery with a view of her beloved mountains in the distance.
