Wayne Laverne Wood

July 22, 1943 - March 6, 2025

Wayne Wood passed away Thursday morning at Crestwood Medical Center where he had been for 7 weeks.

Wayne was born July 22,1943, in Batavia, New York, to Doris and LaVerne Wood.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years Karen Wood, 2 loving stepdaughters, Tammy Pierchoski (Stan), Cheri Volkin (Ron), 5 fantastic grandchildren and 2 adorable great-grandchildren; also 2 sisters Beatrice Mulcahy and Roberta Baker.

Wayne and Karen built and operated KARE Packaging, Inc., a corrugated box manufacturing plant in Athens for 23 years. He had worked in the industry since he was 18. He had 2 master’s degrees and always wanted to own his own business someday. They did and it was very successful.

They were very active in Alabama Ducks Unlimited for 40 years and were Diamond Life Sponsors. Wayne supported Karen during her State Chairman position 2009-2010 and was very instrumental in the AL DU license Tag program.

There will be a visitation on Saturday, March 15th from 12-1:45 p.m. at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home. The memorial service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the chapel. 322 US Highway 31 North, Athens, Alabama, 35611.
