Ex-Batavian Is Retiring As Brockport Student Dean

Oliver C. Spaulding, who has been dean of students at the State University College at Brockport since 1964, has retired and has been replaced by Dr. Robert W. Squatriglia, who had been dean for student services at the college since last July.  Mr. Spaulding is a former Batavian.

Mr. Spaulding came to Brockport in 1957 as director of admissions. When he became dean of students in 1964 the college's enrollment was about 1,400. Enrollment grew to 8,300 last year and will be more than will be more than 10,000 when school opens this September.

Mr. Spaulding received a bachelor's degree from Ithaca College in 1938 and a master's degree from the university of Buffalo in 1952. Before coming to Brockport in 1957 he taught health and physical education at Batavia High School from 1941 until 1957 with time out to serve in the Navy from 1943 until 1946. He came to the area as coach at Elba Central School.

Mr. Spaulding says he and his wife Helen plan a leisurely trip to California to visit relatives beginning late this month. "We have a brand-new trailer and plan to vacation on the way out and back," he said.

Mr. Spaulding says he will probably take a job with a college or university somewhere in the south after traveling for about a year. But, he said, "It will be a different kind of job: one that doesn't keep you going 24 hours a day, seven days a week."

The Spauldings' home is at 7292 Fourth Section Road, Brockport.
