Robert A. Lenz

BATAVIA - Robert A. Lenz, 77, of East Avenue, retired teacher and former principal at Batavia Junior-Senior High School, died Wednesday, March 24, 1993 at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Buffalo, following a brief illness.

Mr. Lenz was born May 10, 1915, in Buffalo, a son of the late Julius and Anna Rittman Lenz.

He graduated in 1938 from Buffalo State Teacher's College and received his masters degree at the University of Buffalo. He had been a teacher since 1938 and began teaching in Batavia in 1942. He was assistant principal of Batavia High School from 1961 to 1965 and principal from 1966 until his retirement in 1978.

He was a member and former deacon, elder and trustee of the First Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Batavia Retired Teachers' Association, and a former member of the Batavia Youth Board. he was also a Board member and treasurer of Batavia-Genesee Senior Center, member and past president of the Batavia Kiwanis Club and chairman of its Youth Activities Committee. He was a past Cub Scoutmaster and was active in Genesee Memorial Hospital's fund drives.

His first wife, Rosemary Uphill Lenz, died in 1976.

Surviving are his wife, Anna Clausius Lenz; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Donna Lenz of Maryland; two daughters and a son-in-law,  Joanne and Edward Schwiegerath of Maryland, and Susan Stum of Pennsylvania; a step-son and daughter-in-law, Raymond and Mary Clausius of Rhode Island; two stepdaughters and sons-in-law, Marilyn and Michael McCabe of Batavia, and Barbara and Larry Hoffman of Rochester; a brother and sister-in-law, Julius and Vivian Lenz of California; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Jeanette and Stewart Bush, and Florence Karns, all of Lockport, and Mary Ann and Robert Franke of West Seneca; six grandchildren; 10 stepgrandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Harvey and Elmer Lenz.

Friends may call from 2 to 4, and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the H.E. Turner and Co. Funeral Home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday aat the First Presbyterian Church of Batavia, with burial in Grand View Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Endowment Fund of the church or the Youth Activities Fund of the Kiwanis Club.
