Gail Beckwith (Hyland) VIEW PROFILE

Gail Beckwith (Hyland)

Date of Birth:  5-30-1945;  Date Deceased:  4-6-2013

Cause of Death:  Cancer

Survived by:  Hazen Hyland, son, 32, Tualatin, OR

Bonnie Thompson, sister, Oak Harbor, WA

Gail Beckwith Hyland passed away on Saturday, April 6, 2013 in Beaverton, OR.  She always retained that engaging smile, warm welcome and humble persona.  After graduating from the University of Washington, she worked at SeaFirst Bank until moving to California in 1980.  She and I lived In Northern California on the Mendocino coast at Sea Ranch and Fort Bragg, where our son Hazen was born, then moving back to Washington, living on Whidbey Island and later San Juan Island.

Lots of boats, trips and fun diversions those years together between 1980-2001.  Always close to our son, we saw  each other frequently after 2001, often surrounding his basketall games while attending  PLU, and again recently when she and I had fun arranging details of his wedding to Casey in Nov 2012.  She was living in Friday Harbor, WA until moving briefly to Beaverton to be near Hazen.

A devout Christian Science member all her life, she carried on the legacy of her parents and grandparents.  Her sister Bonnie Thompson lives in Oak Harbor, WA.  We were married for just over 20 years, having known each other since 8th grade at Highland Jr. High, remaining close friends all this time.  Hazen & his wife Casey were at her side as she passed away.  She left us too soon, as have all our other classmates in this section.  A memorial will be held in Friday Harbor on April 20 at the Grange Hall, 2 PM.

Gail was such a wonderful person.  I cannot think of anyone she didn't like and I never remember her saying a bad or mean thing about anyone.  How difficult was that in high school!  I wish her family strength and courage at this most difficult time.  Such a great loss.  I will remember her with that wonderful smile and I will remember her fondly.

Dear Art and family,

I was deeply saddened to learn of Gail's passing.  Even though my memories of Gail have unavoidably faded from the passage of the intervening 50 years since I last saw her, what hasn't dimmed is my recollection of her great humanity and enthusiasm.  She had a delightful naivete' about her that permeated her being and inspired others to examine their own sense of commitment to causes bigger than themselves.  Strangely, almost as much as I remember her warmth and excitement with life, I remember the special character of her unique voice and manner of speaking that comes back to me down the years with perfect fidelity to this very day!  Gail was the special type of person who was larger than life while being the most unassuming and authentically self effacing soul in the room. Gail would always be the first to selflessly give credit for her inumerable achievements to her family and colleagues.  Along with the rest of us, the world has experienced a profound and irreplaceable loss with her departure from our midst.

Sincerely,

Jerry Owen

Art;

So very sorry to hear of Gails passing.  She was always a sweet, kind person and I know that she will be greatly missed.  I can almost see her walking down the hall smiling and talking to everyone.  May your memories be a comfort to you at this time.

Several people at Gail's memorial wanted to have a copy of this picture, which was framed and on the entrance table.  Picture taken appox. 1998.

How many lives Gail touched. Her beautiful smile, her kindness to all.  Gail was kind, caring and compassionate. What a combination with a genuine smile.
