Anne-Marie and I were close friends from tenth grade until her death in 2009. We didn't see much of each other the last few years, but whenever she was in San Francisco or I was in San Diego, we'd visit, and it would be as if we'd just been together the day before. She and her husband, Michael Dowdall, were daredevils--parachutists, hang gliders--and were always off to some exotic place where they could take to the sky. I'm not a big fan of cell phones, but they sure helped us to keep track of one another. I think of her and miss her every day of my life.
