Desmond & Sons Site: Edward Clifton McClew, Jr. Obituary "Edward "Ted" McClew, age 80, passed away peacefully on November 5, 2024, leaving a legacy of kindness, curiosity, and a life devoted to the service of others. Born on July 24, 1944, Ted spent his life building deep connections, both personally and professionally, in his beloved community. As a retired educator from West Bloomfield High School, Ted was celebrated for his dedication to teaching. Throughout his career, he inspired countless students and educators alike, sharing his passion for learning and instilling values that shaped lives. He approached teaching with enthusiasm and purpose, and his impact will resonate for generations. Faith was at the heart of Ted’s life. He actively served at Birmingham First United Methodist Church and volunteered through multiple missions and charities, always seeking ways to uplift those around him. A nature enthusiast, Ted found great joy in the outdoors, particularly in fishing and sailing. He appreciated life’s finer things, from classic timepieces to craft beers and aged bourbons. His love for cars connected him with a network of fellow enthusiasts. His adventurous spirit took him around the world, where he explored art museums, photography, wonderful food, and books. Ted had a knack for collecting books that reflected his diverse interests and keen intellect. Ted graduated from Albion College with a Bachelor of Arts and received his master’s degree in education from Marygrove College. During college, he formed lifelong friendships as a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity. He valued the camaraderie and brotherhood, remaining connected with his fraternity brothers over the years. Ted is survived by his loving fiancée, Mary Phillips, who was his cherished companion in later years, along with his loving sister, Martha (Steve) Sloan, nieces Amy (David) Brandenstein and Melissa (Randy) Iddins along with his great nieces, Abby and Emma Brandenstein. His love for family and his gift for storytelling ensured he was the heart of every gathering. Ted had a delightful sense of humor, and he was always ready with a joke, finding joy in both telling and hearing one. Ted will be remembered for his kindness, his vibrant curiosity, and the joy he brought into the lives of others. His memory lives on in the hearts of family, friends, students, and his community. A celebration of Ted’s life will be held on Saturday, November 16 at Birmingham First United Methodist Church located at 1589 Maple Road. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. and the service will follow at 11 a.m. After the service, please join us for a luncheon where we will share memories of Ted."
