HAMILTON LAKE – Gerald M. McNerney, 72, of Hamilton Lake and formerly of Butler, passed away Monday, November 7, 2016, at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne. He was born Sept. 30, 1944, in South Bend to Joseph John and Mary (Roebuck) McNerney. He was a veteran of the United States Army. Mr. McNerney was an attorney where he had a private practice in Butler. During his career he worked several times as a prosecutor including chief deputy and deputy prosecutor. He served as the attorney for the DeKalb County Redevelopment Authority since 1994 and also served as Butler City attorney for the last 36 years. He was a charter board member of the Eastside Area Community Foundation and served as president from 1994–1996 and then again from 2003–2007. He also served as president of the Butler Chamber of Commerce in 1977 and was a supporter of the DeKalb County 4-H Auction. He was instrumental in recruiting Steel Dynamics Inc. into rural Butler and also obtaining the Thompson Block Building and having it converted into city offices, thus saving it from abandonment. Because of his love of the City of Butler and the community, he worked right up to the end to make sure someone was there to fill his void so Butler had legal representation. He enjoyed golfing and was an assistant golf coach for Eastside High School for several years. He also coached various little league teams during his kids' childhood and loved cars. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Gerald married Kathryn A. Laub on June 27, 1970, in Butler, and she passed away December 7, 2013.
