Herbert Franklin “Frank” Green, 73, of Monroe, MI passed away suddenly on April 19, 2018.

Green
Frank was a gregarious, compassionate man who will be remembered for his sense of humor and remarkable laugh. He had a wide variety of interests and causes to which he generously donated his time and talents. Frank cared deeply for his family and friends. He was always trying to make life better for others and showed us all how to live with meaning, purpose and love. An outstanding conversationalist, Frank was always game to discuss politics and cars. He was also known for his monthly letters to the editor in the Monroe Evening News.

Frank was born in Detroit, MI on May 14, 1944. He grew up in Metro Detroit and graduated from Seaholm High School in Birmingham, MI. Frank went on to attend the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where he was a member of the Men’s Glee Club and traveled and competed around the world. In 1963 the Glee Club won first place in the Llangollen International Musical competition in Llangollen, Wales, an honor only achieved twice in the history of the club. Frank and other surviving glee club alumni were invited back 50 years later in 2013 to perform with the present U of M Men’s Glee Club to commemorate this victory. Graduating from Wayne State University in Detroit with a Bachelor’s degree, Frank later received his Master’s Degree from the University of Illinois in Urbana.

On April 26, 1984, Frank married Patricia Kettinger of Monroe in Myrtle Beach, SC. Frank was so proud of his “Patty”. A day rarely passed without saying how lucky and blessed they felt to have each other. Frank and Pat had a beautiful life together. Theirs was a marriage built out of deep love, respect and gratitude. Together, Pat and Frank enjoyed traveling, going to classic car auctions and museums, and spending time with family.

Frank worked for 34 years as an English Professor at Monroe County Community College. He retired in 2002, whereby he was granted faculty emeritus status upon the President’s recommendation. Professionally, Frank pursued a dual career in both teaching and business. He owned and operated Monroe Monuments Inc. and Monroe Games, a vending machine company.

Frank was an active participant in multiple chapters of Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel (MARSP). He held many offices with both the local chapter and the Washtenaw and Farmington chapters of the MARSP organization. In his role for MARSP, Frank frequently traveled to Lansing as a legislative ambassador dedicated to preserving pensions and health care benefits for educators. In 2013, Frank received the Distinguished Service Award from the State MARSP. Frank also served as president and trustee of the Detroit Beach Association for many years implementing numerous improvements benefiting the Detroit Beach community.

Frank was an active member of the Trinity Episcopal Church. He felt very strongly about his “church family”. Other volunteer activities included Habitat for Humanity and Potter’s Cemetery and many others, too numerous to list. Hobbies included his classic German car collection, antique clock collection, traveling, reading, history, and politics.

Frank is preceded in death by his mother and father, Herbert Franklin and Caroline (Chittenden) Green, and his brother in law, Rick Feick. Frank is survived by his wife of 34 years, Patricia Green; son Gregory Germain of Monroe and daughter Jill (Ed) Schecter of Waterford, MI; sisters Francelia Green of Birmingham and Carol (Tom) Dammann of Oakland, MI; mother-in-law Ellen Kettinger; brother-in-law Timothy Kettinger of Monroe, MI and sister-in-law Nancy Feick of Monroe, MI; grandsons Andy Germain and Tony Germain and grandaughter Jenell Richards; nephew John (Leah) Dammann and niece Christine (Adrienne) Feick; and great-nephews Alexander Feick-Losh and Levon-Feick-Losh; and cousins.

A memorial celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made in his memory to the Humane Society of Monroe County, Paula’s House, or a cha
