What do all of those letters mean?
PT -These letters indicate my license to practice Physical Therapy, earned in 1999 after obtaining a Master's in Physical Therapy at Duke University.
DPT - Doctor of Physical Therapy, is my highest academic degree, which I earned in 2000 from Duke University.
PCS - This certification is offered by the American Physical Therapy Association™ (APTA). It stands for "Pediatric Certified Specialist", is earned through study and testing, and is supported by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS): www.APTA.org
"The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), a national professional organization representing more than 80,000 members throughout the United States, established the specialist certification program in 1978. Specialization is the process by which a physical therapist builds on a broad base of professional education and practice to develop a greater depth of knowledge and skills related to a particular area of practice. Clinical specialization in physical therapy responds to a specific area of patient need and requires knowledge, skill, and experience exceeding that of the physical therapist at entry to the profession and unique to the specialized area of practice.
The specialist certification program was established to provide formal recognition for physical therapists with advanced clinical knowledge, experience, and skills in a special area of practice and to assist consumers and the health care community in identifying these physical therapists."
C/NDT - Stands for Certified in Neuro-developmental Treatment. This certification requires 6 weeks of studying, learning and applying the concepts of the Neuro Developmental Treatment Association™ (NDTA) before passing a test to demonstrate full understanding of the written concepts and handling techniques. "The NDT Approach is used for management and treatment of individuals with central nervous system (CNS) problems (specifically children with cerebral palsy or brain injuries). The individual's strengths and impairments are identified and addressed in relation to functional abilities and limitations. research, and information in the movement sciences. NDT is a hands-on, problem solving approach. Intervention involves direct handling and guidance to optimize function. The approach is guided by the client's reactions throughout every treatment session.
An NDT Trained or NDT Certified™ therapist's education in neurology,physiology, and current research is translated into daily practice. They work collaboratively with patients, families, caregivers, and other healthcare professionals to develop individualized comprehensive treatment program based on NDT theory and philosophy."
This is the certification that makes my practice advanced! There are only a few other pediatric certified PT's in the country who are also certified in Postural Restoration. This certification requires taking 3 continuing education courses and applying the concepts of the Postural Restoration Institute® (PRI) before passing a 2 day test, which I did in 12/2014. www.posturalrestoration.com:

Schroth-Based Scoliosis Rehab. Trained - This certification is offered by Scoliosis Rehab. Inc. in Wisconsin and The Barcelona Scoliosis Physical Therapy School (BSPTS). They do not offer letters, so we just use the words. I have earned both the C1 and C2 advanced certification over 15 days on two occasions. For more, see: www.scoliosisrehab.com
"This program is modeled after the outpatient Barcelona Scoliosis Physical Therapy School (BSPTS) program used at the E. Salva Institute for Rehabilitation of Spinal Deformities in Barcelona, Spain. The clinic in Spain is directed by Dr. Manuel Rigo MD, a world-renowned professor and Physician specializing in conservative management of scoliosis. They have worked with Dr Rigo training Physical Therapists in the United States since 2004."
