Cyndie Strother (Cunningham)

Haven't seen Sonny since I retired, but I did call his house and left a message with his wife to get on this website. Since he lives in WC, I assume others know about him and would tell him also. Hmmm... maybe he's lurking and doesn't want us to know. Sonny, are you out there?? Log on and tell us what you're doing!!

Cyndie -

I see Sonny at some of the U T football games, and I hope he surfaces as he is still a lot of fun. Keep after him to get signed up.

And for those looking for an act for the Talent Show...
maybe you can karaoke and dance like these two groups.

Kathy Harkreader, I was looking through some old pictures and found one from 6th grade at Jane Long Elementary, my teacher was Margie McKnight. There are only a couple of kids in there whose names I don't remember. Becky Hunt is in the picture. I will see if I can post it on my profile. Maybe it will show up well enough to pick out everyone.

Wow, 25 things, random or otherwise, what a task…

That got me thinking about the last 40 years in a big way. Never one to stand out in a crowd I wondered what I had to report. Well, as it happens, 40 years of memories and all that growing up.

Thank you John Shadwell for getting the memories started with your email and questions about our Freeport days. Memories being what they are, thank goodness it’s a random list!

1. Two great sons both married and happy in their life choices. I wish I could see them every day and revel in their accomplishments, but that’s not the way of things.
2. Travis, my oldest, lives in California with his wife Misty. A California girl and I think they will never be Texans in residence. However, I can’t blame them. If I lived in the California wine country I’d stay, too. It is a great place to visit though and I do as often as I can.
3. My second son, Justin and his wife Wendi have given me two amazing grandchildren. Aidan, 6 and Brooklyn, 1. Aidan is my great joy and I could easily spend every day with him just drinking him in. And that little girl is a fabulous gift that God saw fit to withhold until now. I am a sentimental mess with her, but offer no apologies. She simply fills my heart. Fortunately, my friends love me enough to put up with my chronicles of Mimi-hood. Travis and Misty continue to hope and pray for a baby in spite of two miscarriages. I pray with them.
4. Finally finished college in my 40s and am so glad for it. No fun college stories to tell, but such a major personal accomplishment.
5. Weight up, weight down, weight up, weight down, weight up.
6. I love the structure of exercise classes and working out in a gym.
7. I am a health care administrator by accident and have been with the same health care system for 17 years. I fell into it early and it stuck. Health care operations is like malaria. It gets in your blood and sometimes it makes you sick, but mostly you just live with it. I love my job even when I hate it.
8. I still live within 50 or so miles of BHS. Every storm season I promise I will move from the coast and every storm season I’m still here.
9. I lost my father in my 30s and have missed him greatly over the years. I know he would love to see my grandchildren.
10. I never realized how much my grandmother loved me until she wasn’t there anymore.
11. I learned the hard way that you can’t discuss politics with everyone, but Dee Allen I’d love to hear more of your ideas. You and I might be standing on the same soapbox!
12. I love to travel but don’t get to do enough of it. Most of my travel has been in the US with the requisite trips to Mexico and the occasional cruise. So much to see at home.
13. Best trip-Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Even if you don’t ski, Jackson makes you want to try! The snowmobiling was fine and the trip to Yellowstone in blinding snow made me love winter vacations.
14. Second best trip – Maui. Can’t even begin to describe it.
15. So many things that seemed important in high school weren’t. That lesson continues into the present.
16. It is wonderful to run into old school friends. I love being reminded of our younger selves and the significance of our lives. I saw Jerri Mills recently and was transported to Freeport in a flash!
17. I have friends in places I never thought I would. The world is indeed small.
18. Will I ever get to 25? Is it pass/fail?
19. I had a serious automobile accident and found I couldn’t process the details for days afterward. Once again I was reminded of the power of God to protect us in every way.
20. My life is more well rounded than I ever imagined it would be. I have an eclectic group of friends who are important to me in their various ways. Growing up in a small Texas town I never expected that. It has been liberating.
21. Fortunately I have discovered that some friendships never die. They grow with you and you have their history to hold on to. It is a huge comfort.
22. I was married to James Tarver for 8 years which in the overall scheme is about a half hour. We are at peace with one another, share our children’s lives happily and I still love his family.
23. John Shadwell: my Freeport phone number was BE3-1255. Scary that I remember that and can’t remember what I had for breakfast!
24. I wouldn’t change a thing.
25. Lynda Bearman Schupp told me I wasn’t going to get a grade on this and I could do it however I wanted. See you in September.

Becky Hunt moved to Dallas after 6th grade. She lived in Highland Park/Dallas during junior high but graduated from Austin High School in Austin. Later graduated from the University of Texas in Nursing. She worked in the Dallas area for many years and has one daughter. I haven't heard from her in about 15 years.

Dickie Tracy

Shrek, Brad Pitt and Jennifer Lopez were all having lunch together.

Shrek said, 'I have always thought that I'm the strongest man in the World, but how can I be sure?

Brad Pitt said, 'I'm pretty sure I'm the hottest man alive but I've Never had it confirmed.'

Jennifer Lopez agreed. 'I'm told I'm the sexiest of them all, but Sometimes I wonder.'

They all decided that the best way to find out if their beliefs were true was to approach the wicked Queen's mirror to confirm for them whether Shrek was the strongest, Brad Pitt was the hottest and Jennifer Lopez was the sexiest.

They agreed to meet again the next day for lunch to discuss their findings.

The next day Shrek walked up with a smile. 'Well, it's true. The mirror told me that I am the strongest man in the world.'
jennifer lopez followed and boasted, 'It is true, it has been confirmed that I am the hottest woman alive!!'

brad pitt walked in, head bent, tears in his eyes and asked, "Who in the hell is jim Barnett?

Jim: How'd you like that! I remember that Texas History comic book. It was really neat. I kept mine for years and years - I think it finally got thrown out after a move or two. You can still find them on the web at a price! And I remember the "Adventure Series" you spoke about. I loved reading those. I was in Mrs. Colvin's 4th grade class and Mrs. Antill's 5th grade class when we were reading those.

Cindie: You mentioned Earl Sims. I wonder what "gated community" he's living in now? You didn't live on Acacia did you? I lived on Laurel across the street from Kim Kincannon, Dennis Anderson, next door to Pat Lorenz and across from David Smith(68) and just down from Dee Sanders who still lives in the same house he grew up in. Carl Robbins lived just down from us. Kindergarten was with Mrs. Perry in the Church of Christ across from LJ Primary. I had Mrs. Johnson(1st), Mrs. Rea(2nd), Mrs. Goddard(3rd), Mrs. Colvin(4th), Mrs. Antill(5th) and Mr. Cowan(6th).

Does anyone remember taking driver's Ed from Horace Driscoll? I think some got lucky and had Coach Landers.

You guys have great memories. It is actually jogging my memory. I was surprised to see that some of you were in my primary classes. I also had Mrs. Sampson in K. It was at my church and I couldn't figure out why I never saw her on Sunday. I forgot my 2nd grade teacher but I do remember getting in trouble for the 1st time at school for not stop giggling when Karen King fell on the floor after someone pulled her chair out from under her. I know it isn't politically correct, but I still laugh when I see something like that. I just hope noone is hurt.

I also had Mrs. Goddard and I loved her. She was pretty and I felt like the teacher's pet because I got to stay late and clean erasers and grade our spelling papers. One time she was ranting about James L. Smith and slamming doors. I put my fingers in my ears and she yelled at me. I wouldn't stay after school after that.
She had burst her image with me.

I also remember that we had to take our first ITBS test. Alice wet her pants because we couldn't get out of our seats. Sorry, Alice.

I remember someone throwing up on my back while we were saying the pledge of allegiance. YUCK! Must be a reason I can't remember who. I know it was a boy.

Did anyone remember taking French in 3rd grade? That was fun to me.

I had Mrs. Perry in 4th. I remember playing kickball at recess and after lunch. Gerry Sue was so great!

One time I stayed after school and played with Janis Snavely while her mother had a conference. When it was over, Mrs. Perry asked for the ball back and Janis threw it and hit her right in the head. I thought she might fail. Sorry, Janis.
=======================================================
No, that was Dickie Tracy that wet his pants. I was sitting right beside him and felt soooooooooo sorry for him. Mrs. Goddard refused to let him go to the restroom. Alice

I left out Mrs. Johnson in 1st grade. I loved her. She introduced reading to me and let us take home her books. I cried my eyes out the last day of school.

I had Mrs. Antill then Mrs. Nance. Now that I have been a teacher for 25 yrs., I realize that Mrs. Nance used some of the best brain-based teaching strategies around. No wonder I remember so much about what we did in class that year.

What was the new teacher we had in 7th grade? Some guys put me in the trash can and put in on her table. She also sent some boy to the office for saying "yesmaam" thinking he was being sassy with her.

Marian Sahr (Bullard)

I love everyone sharing their memories. I have had the wonderful opportunity of actually seating in the Panthers stadium to watch my grandson play football. Next year my granddaughter will be a cheerleader for the Panthers. When the cheerleaders are singing the fight song and I can sing every word with them, my daughters think I have completely flipped out. I love Lake Jackson and was hoping to move back. We will when the economy picks back up and we can sell our house and grass farm. I'm tired of working on the house and farm and ready to RELAX. John, glad to see you come on board. Oh yeah, I can't remember my last cell phone number but growing up my number was CY7-4884. Take care and God Bless.

Dickie-
My sister Annette stays in contact with Earl- he actually lives in a travel trailer in Sargent, TX, living off the money he made from selling his parents house and mowing yards. He has a son that graduated from high school last year and Annette says he still
"rough" or to put it nicely, a character.

Jd Barnett:

Poor Brad Pitt...

Very funny, Dickie.

I kept my Texas book for a long time, too, but it finally drifted away. I ran down a replica some years ago and have it.

Mrs. Goddard's class was a real eye opener for me. I had never seen a urinal before and had to watch to see how to use it. (Yeah, slow developer...) It was Steve Broussard that taught me how to cuss. Toward the end of the year I kissed a girl. Yes, I remember who it was.

It was a momentous year.

Jd Barnett:

Judy...Was the teacher you're talking about an English teacher? If it was, I remember her well. She flunked me first nine weeks and I couldn't believe it. She was cute as a bug and I had a major crush on her. I just can't remember her name, though.

Cyndie Strother (Cunningham)

Dickie,

I lived on Center Way... John Spinks (Winona's husband) lived across the street, Jim (JD), Randy White (class 1970), Cynthia Carter, Marilyn Smith, Cindy Harris and John Taylor. Linda Broome lived on Acacia. Mary Metzger lived behind us. Randy Crosley lived on the corner of Elm and Center Way. Back then you knew everyone on your street and the streets parallel. That was our boundry unless we got permission to go elsewhere.

04/27/09 11:31 AM #604

Jd Barnett:

Cyndie, LJ was a bit of an odd town in some ways. Since it was only a few years old, and most dads worked at Dow, everyone was the same age and grandmas, cousins, uncles, and so forth were pretty scarce. It sure made for a good neighborhood, though. Didn't Bobbie Jean Matlock live next to you? She taught me to shoot the bird. George Wayne Brooks lived next door; he was older by a couple of years and would gather us up to make baseball and football teams. He had little sisters (Dee Dee and Terry). George died year. Lola McClanahan lived around the corner. Dougie Gibson lived on the corner of Magnolia and Center Way. John Gary and Laura McDonald lived 'way down Center Way; it must have been two blocks. It might as well have been across the sea, at least until we got bicycles. Then the whole world opened up and I could even go across the highway (302?) and visit Dale Dempsey. Dale's mom was almost the same as my own. We ate more meals at Dale's than at home.

Gail Tribble -
Good to hear from an old 4th St. neighbor. You would think that no one graduated from BHS, in 1969, who had attended O.A. Flemming. My daughter taught 2d grade there for three years. THAT makes me feel old.

Shadwell -
You're another one the cat drug up. No offense, but I don't have any fond memories of San Diego. Went out there in January 1971. Thought I was going to "Sunny" southern CA. Left Houston wearing sandals and a short sleeve shirt. It was cold enough to freeze the balls off a pool table. In February we went to the rifle range, at Camp Pendleton, and our canteens froze. We wouldn't light the kerosene heaters in the Quonset hut because they were so sooty, we didn't want to clean them. In 1973, I went back to SD, Coronado Island, for amphibious training (getting in the water with your clothes on). Man, the Pacific Ocean ain't no Gulf of Mexico. In July, the Gulf is 85 degrees and the Pacific is 65. You have to go 40 miles out of Freeport to get into 100 feet of water. In SD, you only have to go about 40 yards out to get into 100 feet of water. I've never been warm in SD. I only missed one Super Bowl. It was the 1971 Super Bowl (Dallas lost to the Baltimore Colts).

Dee Ann Trout (Glenn)

Kindergarten- Mrs. Sampson
First Grade- Mrs. Epps: Still remember the smell of the coat closet because that is where we kept our lunch boxes (Mine Roy Rogers...wish I still had that one) and the sweet smell of a cigar box because that is what we used to hold our crayons.
Second Grade- Mrs. Davis (I think): I remember a student died that year in our class.
Third Grade-Mrs. Lee: (I remember you could sometimes get an electrical shock when you went to the water fountain (in the classroom). I think it was too close to the record player.
Fourth Grade- Mrs. Colvin I remember the Adventure Series also. Cried when I had to do a book report over a few of those chapters that had been read aloud to us. Taking Spanish for part of the day. Good idea, but it didn't stick.
Fifth Grade- Mrs. Long: I remember getting sent out to the hall for the first time. This could be from 4th grade or 5th grade, but totally Candy Sullivan's fault. I wrote on the back of her valentine that she loved Earl Simms and she told on me. That valentine sat on the teacher's desk for a few days just to make me sweat. Finally, I got called out in the hall for a good talking to.
Sixth Grade: Mr. Cowan (one of my favorites) Remember taking a big dill pickle to recess everyday and playing jacks or kickball with Linda Neely and others.

Dickie Tracy

Judy & JD: The 7th grade English teacher was Mrs. Bourgeoirs or something like that or am I thinking of Mrs. Piccard (something like that). I know who you're talking about. She was the prettiest teacher I think I had. 7th grade English with Mr. somebody is when we learned about our new zipcode. Before that, we were in Zone 7.

Kitty Allison (Hilton)

I cannot remember the name of that teacher either, but she was very young and very beautiful. She either wore blue contacts or had VERY blue eyes. I remember her well and am surprised that none of us can recall her name!

Jd Barnett:

I think Dickie gets the memory prize.....It was Ms. Bourgeois (sp). What a babe...
