Carrol Reneau (Jeffers)

Regarding Jim Barnett's response to misrepresenting his colon: Me thinks thou doth protest too much (you aren’t the only one who reads). One who prevaricates may find it difficult to find support in claims of being slandered. One might question the content of your entire profile and all of your posted photos. With available software it is so easy to falsify photos. On the web anyone can be whatever they want to be. Not to insult any of our attorney classmates but . . . #2 certainly sounds like it was written by a defense attorney.

02/16/09 02:47 PM #63

Jd Barnett:

Ms. Reneau, or whatever you call yourself these days...

Everything I learned about the law I learned from my exes' attorneys.

Anyone can be anything. Anything can be anywhere. Something can be nothing.

"Mi tio es infermo, pero la carretera es verde.:

Give me a cite for that, Miss Know-It-All "I read too, hahaha"...no Googling allowed...

Carrol Reneau (Jeffers)

"No googling allowed" - how bold of you to make rules.

Jim's uncle is ill, and his road is green. He's been in Caleefornia too long.

Carrol Reneau (Jeffers)

'splains alot,doesn't it?

02/16/09 03:46 PM #67

Jd Barnett:

The IDEA, Carrol, is to tell this august group WHERE the quote originated.

I can make up any rules I want. Everyone else seems to. And I'm sure all will be as diligent in following mine as I am in following theirs.

And I like California, Mike. It's even better than living in Bone, Idaho. Nothing like buying in at the top of the most expensive housing market in the country, then watching everything drop 40%...oops...

Carrol Reneau (Jeffers)

Don't know, don't care. However, will try to live on with dignity and honor.

02/16/09 05:06 PM #69

Jd Barnett:

I support you in your endeavor, Carrol. Turning over a new leaf is hard enough without the help of your friends. For the record, the quote is from Issue #65, MAD Magazine, published in 1965.

02/17/09 12:41 PM #72

Elaine Garrison (Barnett)

O.K.,I know I have stalled long enough and Tricia is wondering when I'm going to reveal all about my "sordid past" since she tagged me last week. So, here goes...

1. I am having so much fun reading all of your stories and relating to many of them. I can't believe I am spending as much time as I am with the reunion website. Hubby must think I am on-line shopping at ebay or Amazon.com since I am on the computer way more than usual.

2. I left the day after our high school graduation and went to the University of the Americas in Mexico City and lived with a Spanish speaking family for the summer. Sadly, three years of high school Spanish classes with Mr. Torres and a summer totally immersed in the language, I can only remember "si" and how to count to 10.

3. I graduated in 1973 from Stephen F. Austin with a B.S. in Education. My student teaching experience was not a positive one, so I didn't teach right away. Instead, I did office work for an oil company in Dallas and then worked in marketing for The Drawing Board Greeting Card Co. in Dallas. Work in the classroom came later after our sons were in elementary school (at Stephen F. Austin in Jones Creek!)

4. I met my soul mate, Phil Barnett, during our senior year at SFA. We married on December 28, 1974 and have been happily married since. Phil was born in McKinney, TX, but he and his family moved to Dallas when he began 4th grade. He considers himself a "Yankee Texan" (born north of I-10).

5. My Dad died in 1971 at the young age of 56 from heart disease. I didn't have a Dad to walk me down the aisle and "give me away" when Phil and I married, but I did have my 3 older brothers. Phil says they all had the look of "make her happy or you will live to regret it" on their faces as they escorted me to the altar. I guess Phil took that look seriously as he has been a wonderful spouse for 34 years. (Takes all contracts seriously.)

6. We have two grown sons: Kevin (born in Denver,CO) and is almost 31 (on Feb. 27th). He works and lives in New York City in the East Village. He is a web developer for New York Magazine's website. He is extremely smart, sensitive, creative and available if any of you have a prospect for him. Collin (born in Dow Hospital in Freeport,TX)is 29, single and is our special needs son. He lives at home with me and Phil and works at a major grocery store chain that is not too far from our home. Collin is very endearing and engaging to all he meets so he brings smiles to the customers he serves and employees he works with.

7. Phil's career has required us to relocate to several locations (listed on my profile) around the country. We have treated each move as an adventure and have been blessed with many special memories and lasting friendships that we hold near and dear to our hearts.

8. I am a foodie and love to cook and bake. Phil also enjoys cooking and is the "bread man" as he makes wonderful homemade bread and rolls. His first job after graduate school was being an FDA Auditor - a position that obviously doesn't exist anymore with all of the food safety issues we have to deal with now.

9. I would prefer to be invited to eat at someone's home rather than go to a restaurant. Most food establishments are too noisy to carry on a nice conversation.

10. I also love drinking good wine and am so glad it is heart healthy. I never have liked beer, but admit the brew I tasted in Germany was quite good.

11. I got in on a taping of Emeril Live in New York City in September 2006. The episode, which aired in January 2007, was "Chicken Delight". Emeril made seven different chicken dishes, but never once did he say his famous "Bam-Bam-Bam". He is certainly not one of my favorites on Food Network, but it was a fun experience.

12. Phil and I enjoy staying at Bed & Breakfasts vs. hotels when we travel. Sometimes I feel like we operate one since we often host Phil's out-of-town work associates. We also have visiting family and friends whom we have fun catering to.

13. I do exercise and walk to try to stay in shape. I don't recall how much I weighed in high school (avoided scales like the plague and it obviously showed!), but I now weigh significantly less. Finally had a "light-bulb" moment after our sons were born and have been committed since.

14. I like to go to local real estate open-houses on Sunday afternoons. It is not because I want to buy another house, but I am curious to see how other people decorate and to keep up with market value, which of course is now in the tank. Phil says I should be a realtor, but no one is making any money these days, especially in Florida.

15. Obviously if I like going to open houses, I also enjoy watching HGTV. I especially enjoyed the "House Hunters" episode of our former Chicago suburb, Highland Park, IL. All of the homes featured were within close proximity of the one we had owned. I had even been inside one (as a curiosity seeker) when it had previously been on the market.

16. One of the hardest things I have had to do and witness is hold our beloved 12 and 1/2 year old beagle Sadie, while she was put to sleep. Phil says he wants to come back in his next life as Sadie since she was so pampered and advantaged during her lifetime.

17. Believe it or not, I have not had to succumb to hair color yet. Yes, I have experimented a few times just to see what highlights or a different shade would look like, but honestly only have a few gray ones on the old crown. I think I have my Mom to thank for that.

18. Speaking of my Mom, she passed away in March 2003 at the age of 89. Sadly, our family witnessed "two deaths" with her as she had Alzheimer's. I hope and pray she didn't pass that gene on to me or my brothers.

19. Has anyone had a Greenberg Smoked Turkey from Tyler, TX? If not, you must order one during the holiday season! They are fabulous and a tradition for us at Thanksgiving. Just go to their website, www.gobblegobble.com (no-kidding) for information. Oprah even included them in one of her famous "Favorite Things and Give-Away" Shows a few years ago, but I knew about these turkeys before Oprah. They were also featured in a Texas Monthly (Nov. 2006) article on "best of the best" mail order foods. I thought I would throw that in just in case you didn't take my own endorsement seriously. Remember, I mentioned in item #8 I am a foodie and we even frequently use our own grill and smoker for fish, chicken, tenderloins, etc.

20. I indicated in my "classmate profile" that we have lived in several places and we are currently in Tampa, FL, but not for retirement; contrary to what you must have been thinking. Phil's company (PricewaterhouseCoopers) relocated us here in June 2006 from Chicago, where we had lived for almost 8 years and were hoping to stay. Florida is not where we intend to stay when Phil does retire (if he ever decides to). Texas Hill Country is high on our list, but who knows where we will end up...retirement accounts and investments are in shreds and look pretty sad these days.

21. I stay busy with volunteer work, church committees, Beth Moore Bible Studies, chauffeuring Collin, P.E.O.(Philanthropic Educational Organization), culinary experiments and trying to keep this aging body in shape.

20. I am inspired by the energy of the 70-90 year olds who stay active and love life and partying here in Tampa. Florida must have a "Fountain of Youth".

21. No, I haven't had any plastic surgery (o.k., I admit I did on an ugly leg scar at the age of 11), even though it is a growth industry in Florida. Anything can be surgically enhanced here.

22. I don't think anyone has mentioned that most of us got our driver's licenses at age 14 - what were the Texas lawmakers thinking!!!! I had a hard enough time with age 16, when our oldest son started driving.

23. Tricia, I don't know why you are complaining about no one wanting to drive to Jones Creek way back when - what about me; living on the San Bernard near Brazoria! That was an additional 4 more miles to drive.

24. I hope I have convinced any of you to look me up if you ever find yourself in Florida - Phil and I love to entertain and will prepare a tasty feast for you.

25. I would love to be a "fly on the wall" at these planning meetings the reunion committee is having. But beware; ears are burning all across the U.S.A. from stories, photos, etc. being submitted to you by us trusting souls. In all seriousness, many thanks for all the work, time and effort each of you are contributing to bring our class back together after 40 years. Gosh, where did the time go? Life is much too short!

I tag Shelley Gray McCoy (fellow former "San Bernard River Rat" neighbor).

I am having so much fun reading all these profiles and stories. I've become addicted to this site logging in all the time at work (sorry, boss!) So many of you have had such exciting and wonderful lives - I feel quite boring and my life seems so mundane compared. HL and I
traveled with his work (Brown and Root) for several years, living in Vernal, Utah where he was QA/QC for a dam (not damn) project up in the mountains. Being a lowland Texas girl and the highest peak I had seen was the Surfside Bridge, the mountains were thrilling and exciting to me, never mind the snow in the fall, winter and spring! We used to drive in the mountains with our
doberman every Sunday afternoon. We actually went elk
hunting there, but the only ones we saw were the dead ones in the back of others trucks! We also went up in the mountains to cut our Christmas tree in the National Forest (for a mere $2.00 permit). The snow was waist high on me (but at 4' 10 1/2" that's not a huge amount)
and HL cut our tree. We had to cut 2' off to get it in
the house. We moved to Albuquerque, NM after this job and HL traveled for Brown and Root from this base. He was an estimator and trouble shooter for some of their jobs. I went with him to a job in Elko, NV for another job. The hotel we stayed in had a casino, well every place we went to there had slots - the grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants. That was wild! Our first son was conceived on this trip - and I had to go home to
Albuquerqe to see a doctor. Ed was born in Albuquerque
and we lived there for 2 years. When B&R closed that office we moved back to Texas and have been here since.
A lot more has gone on, but I won't bore ya'll further-
got to save some of these stories for the reunion.

Carrol Reneau (Jeffers)

Ladies and Gentlemen and all the ships at sea, I have uncovered a giant fraud among us. "The Wandering Child, the Slandered Child, The Hard Eight, The Trickle Up Economist, JD Barnett, Stranger In A Quite Familiar Land, Just Call Me Lucky, Just Call Me Sad, Whathehell?...the70's, Glub...Glub...Glub, the AntiSocialist, the Clothes Horse, The Continuing Adventures of Jim Barnett, the Bulk of Which are Based on Real Events,JD Barnett's Penultimate Picture Show, What IS that giant whooshing sound?,The Triglyceride Kid" is NOT THE JIM BARNETT who graduated with the Brazosport High School Class of 1969. I expose you as an IMPOSTER - WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH THE REAL JIM BARNETT?

Yvonne Senturia

Hmmmmm..... I never took Latin, so can't respond to Dee's comment, except to say that in English, equanimity is a synonym for inexcitability, which isn't nearly as much fun to use in a sentence.

02/18/09 10:24 AM #78

Jd Barnett:

Dee: I can't remember Yvonne's horses being all that big, but my memory is fading...Nice horses, though. Yvonne: The only appropriate response to Dee's Latin reference is, in the words of Augustus McCrae, "uva uvam vivendo varia fit." It's just as appropriate for Class of '69 as it was for the Hat Creek Ranch. We don't rent pigs, either. Margaret: Thank you, dear. Tell HL to get off his lazy butt and contribute something. Carrol "the Mentalist" Reneau: Some seek their inner child, I chose to find my inner child and beat the little bastard to death on the road between Livingston, Montana and Lethbridge, Alberta in 1971. Life has been a lot more fun since. So the one you seek lies in an unmarked grave in a field of winter wheat in the Big Sky Country. May he rest in peace.

Carrol Reneau (Jeffers)

Okay, Jimbo, the teasing has been fun 'til now but that just makes me sad.

02/18/09 01:51 PM #80

Jd Barnett:

I thought it rolled nicely from the word processor, with fluidity and power...

Carrol, don't be sad. Take it as an indication that the inner child really didn't get beaten to death, but still oversteps boundaries just like it did in 1969. I apologize if I made you feel bad. I'm really looking forward to seeing everyone at the reunion.

Shelley Gray (McCoy)

Carrol and Elaine (formerly Mary Elaine), here goes!
1. The scar on which Elaine admitted having plastic surgery and the scar on my forehead are the result of a serious car wreck in which we were involved on Sept. 1, 1961.
2. I have often wondered what direction my life might have taken if I had not skipped 11th grade and graduated with this class!
3. I have learned to like and accept myself as I've gotten older.
4. I have been able to stay in touch with Janet Skaggs since I go to church with her mother and sister, and I love getting to see her when she is in Texas.
5. As strange as this sounds, having breast cancer was a blessing in my life. After my marriage failed, I was feeling "unloved" and "unlovable," but as soon as I was diagnosed with cancer, the outpouring of love and support made me realize that I am neither of those!!!
6. I consider my daughter and my son the greatest gifts God has given me, and I not only love them, but I also like them very much.
7. I want to market the cheeseball that I make.
8. I cook to relax and unwind.
9. Both my parents were alcoholics.
10. I have grown immeasurably as a result of my sister Diane's suicide in 1975.
11. I love being an elementary librarian and reading aloud "like a crazy person."
12. I lived in New Orleans (Metairie actually) for one miserable year. It might have been a great place to visit, but a not so great place to live.
13. I could eat Mexican food every single day.
14. I have five dogs, thanks to my children bringing them home. Two are indoor pets, and three stay in the backyard.
15. A number of you will remember a lady named Gwen French. She worked as a substitute teacher at Freeport Junior High for years. She is now 83 and one of my dearest friends. Of course, people always mistakenly assume she is my mother.
16. While attending LSU, I went on a class trip to visit the only hospital serving lepers at that time, and I learned the real horrors of leprosy as well as putting to rest the myths.
17. I am very afraid of snakes, but not spiders or insects.
18. After losing my hair during chemo, I am very proud to have hair, and I like the gray!
19. I teach technology to teachers in Angleton ISD, and while I went kicking and screaming into the computer age, I am now pleased that I have these skills and can help others acquire them.
20. I love to dance to country and western music.

Are those random enough?
Shel

Good job Shelley. I really appreciate your sweet spirit and more than that, your transparency. Thank you for letting us into your life. And I am glad that you graduated with us!!! ;-)I look forward to visiting in Sept.

Elaine Garrison (Barnett)

I must give credit where credit is due and much deserved...
Shelley's Dad (Dr. Ralph Gray), is the one who did the plastic surgery on my leg scar and did a wonderful job.

Shelley, my Mom and Dad are smiling down on you from heaven for referring to me with my full given name - Mary Elaine.

By the way; I too, am very afraid of snakes, but not insects or spiders.

I received this from Ray Beets.

From Ray Beets
Subject I Tag Myself

It's no fair for none of us from Clute to join in on the fun. I Tag Myself.

I Tag Myself – Ray Beets – Former Cougar from Clute Junior High
1. Only 28 percent of those that grew up in Clute, Lake Barbara, or Richwood have registered on this site. What gives, aren’t we Clutonians (as they used to say on KILT radio) computer literate. The average rate overall is 38 percent. Boy, we are really dragging down the signup rate.
2. Now I know why only people from Lake Jackson and Freeport are participating in the Message Board.
3. Clute U forever, even if many of you moved to Lake Jackson when you grew up.
4. I guess no one mentions Clute U anymore since Brazoswood is in Clute.
5. I know an deep, dark, secret about Janis Snavely. She went to Clute Elementary for a while. I remember her and Beverly Johnston sitting at my table in Kindergarten or was it First Grade. I had Miss Singleton for Kindergarten and Miss Betsy for First grade.
6. Kerry Franks taught me how to walk on crutches in the first grade, didn’t you Kerry. (He broke my leg on the playground at recess.)
7. For 6 years I blamed another guy for breaking my leg. See, you could have gotten away with it if you had kept your mouth shut in 7th grade when we met up again. I forgive you anyway.
8. I met Glynn Irby’s college suit mate while walking along a snowy street at Christmas time in Munich, Germany. He was a representative for Linde AG that we were conferring with about redesigning our plant site in Houston. (I work for DuPont.) Man, Glynn and his friends really get around.
9. I have read Don Quixote in the original Spanish. (It is sort of like trying to read Shakespeare when English is your second language). Thanks Mr. Torres, I really enjoyed it.
10. I also read the first half of Fidel Castro’s “Biografía a dos voces” in his own words. I stopped reading when he finished the history of the revolution and started getting into mostly propaganda. It was very interesting to hear his perspective.
11. After having been about the quietest person in Brazosport High School, I found myself Band Booster President of Long Beach High School (Mississippi). Had to know each and every kid by name, his instrument, section leader, and parents. Had to supervise every committee and help lead every fund raiser. It was great fun, and I enjoy meeting them now that they are young adults.
12. I had a heart attach in 1996 and have had angioplasty three times on three arteries (one of the arteries a second time). I exercise, have lost weight, watch my blood sugar and all that now. I feel great!
13. Growing up in Brazosport, I thought that there had been nothing worse than Carla! Moved to the gulf coast of Mississippi in 1987 and they tried to convince me that Camile was much worse. All of us down here in Mississippi now understand just how devastating a REAL hurricane can be. We talk about Before Katrina and After Katrina like some people use BC and AD.
14. Used to love the Pine trees in my back yard. Katrina invited the largest and tallest one of them to visit 6 of the rooms in my house. Took us two and a half years to repair. The good news is that I was one of the lucky ones. Many of my friends came back to only a slab. You get to see the very best in people from most of the people after a disaster. There is a small percentage that try to take advantage of the situation. Unfortunately, these are the people that you see the most on the news. The aftermath of Katrina really raised my faith in my fellow man.
15. The people in Texas were wonderful to us after Katrina. I put my youngest son and daughter in school in Katy, Texas (living with my sister) until our schools re-opened in Mississippi. They did everything they could to welcome my kids into their school and match up their classes to what they had been taking back home.
16. No, the Hurricane did not destroy New Orleans. 50 or more years of ignoring the levee system let New Orleans get flooded after the Hurricane had gone by.
17. I really feel for those of you affected by Rita, Gustav, and Ike.
18. Thank you to all the people from all of the many churches of every denomination that came to our aid on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
19. I have read all of the Harry Potter books. I have only read one of them in English.(the last one, did not want to wait until the translations came out and have someone tell me the surprise ending)
20. People in Mississippi are not as backward as most of the nation thinks. I really find it funny when I encounter someone from say Massachusetts and I take them completely by surprise. We were seated at a table in the German restaurant at Epcot with a family from Massachusetts. The son was an avid Harry Potter fan. His mother asked me if I had a new issue of the series. I showed them my book and explained to them that it was a translation of the second book to Dutch. Man, did they every have puzzled looks on their faces. I did not fit their preconceived notions.
21. I really enjoy my job as a chemical engineer. Thanks Mr. Boyer and Mr. Lake. Also thanks to Mr. Cain – having some basic drafting skills has really paid off.
22. I would also like to thank Mrs. Huff for being the best English teacher I ever had. Yeah, it’s publish or perish even in the plant environment for engineers. No technical reports, no credit for the job done.
23. Thanks to Mrs. Lorenz. She gave me a great appreciation for history.
24. I am fairly tall (6’2”). When I lived in Tennessee, they thought that I was very tall. One day one of my packers asked me why I had every left Texas if I liked it so much. I told him that I had gotten tired of being called “Shorty”. I think he believed me.
25. I now have three sons that are all taller than me. Randy is 6’7”. I truly am Shorty now.

I tag Kerry Franks, Glynn Irby, Glenn Patton, Johnny Ponton, Collene Shoemaker, and Vickie Norris. I started to tag everyone from Clute, but decided that I needed to leave a few for the rest of you.
