Dominico ...

I think the donation, whatever it may be, should be from the entire class of '88 regardless of who participates.
Unfortunately there will be those that may not be able to donate monetarily. They are still a part of our graduating class. Capisca??
I love the idea of the scholarship ... Cheryl Bowen mentioned that as well.

I'll call you soon. I haven't been all that busy other than soaking up some rays and swimming every day!
It's Summer!

As someone who now works for the Canfield School system (I can almost hear the laughter), I would like to say that we would never turn down a gift. School funding has really changed in the last 20 years. Actually Ohio school funding was found to be unconstitutional but nothing has been done to fix it. Although we have a wonderful community, it is tough to keep going back and asking them to pass more levies. Currently we have to buy our technology from Campbell. The state gives Campbell City Schools tons of money and when they buy new computers we buy some of their old ones. The television in my classroom has the date "Oct. 1982" carved into the wood paneling and my computer takes up more than a third of my desk space. One private group that has organized is the Renovate the Roost campaign (www.renovatetheroost.com). This group has been updating our facilities through private donations and they have done an outstanding job. I believe their next project is to expand the football bleachers and make them handicap accessible. Since a trip to the state championship in 2005 our stands are full and it is a worthwhile project. I hope this doesn't sound like whining because we still have great kids and faculty members, but I just thought I should share some of this and let you know that we would be happy to receive any gift in any form.

Tara-

I think its great that some people have organized fundraising for the stands, but could you communicate some academic or classroom needs to the planning group? I, personally, would prefer that we give something that would benefit the students in an academic way. It just seems like we would be able to touch more people that way. I think its wild that Canfield is buying computers from Campbell. I can remember taking a computer class as a middle schooler as an after school enrichment thing. Thanks for the info!

Thanks Tara...I think something like donating to add handicapped access is a wonderful idea! That is the type of donation I think is best, and most importantly, for a worthy cause...it gives to the school AND those in need in the community. Since you have the inside knowledge, are there any other areas lacking in a similar nature?

The company I work for has a policy that no computer will ever be older than three years and 1/3 of the company gets a new machine every year...we donate every machine after the 3 years to local schools. Are there any companies in the valley that may have a similar policy? Granted, my company is a bit unique; we provide water and sewer to several communities, but are not affiliated w/ the city or government. We are a not-for-profit (similar to non-profit) utility so we have to spend our extra money and are fortunate to have the latest in technology all the time...so what we donate is high quality equipment. Unfortunately, the schools aren't staffed with the quality of teachers that the Midwest, especially Canfield has...so even tho they are well equipped, they aren't graduating students with the values that we all seem to have...different philosophy in the south, I don't know.

A computer that takes a third of your desk? Mine too...it sucks to have a 30" flat screen to do my work...just messin' with ya! I know how fortunate I am to get the perks I do...not the salary, but the little extras make up for it.

Debbie...enjoy your summer...call me in February and ask me what the temperature is down here! ;) Just kidding...call whenever...not like I'm going anywhere...;)

Tara ...

Does the state of Ohio give money to Campbell Local Schools because of economic reasons?
The school my children attend does not get anything however the neighboring elementary school gets plenty.
Because of our economic bracket we are neglected by the state.

I started thinking more in depth about the scholarship and are we talking about one for future education? In that case it would only be worthwhile to seniors.
I was hoping that we could do something that everyone (or almost) could benefit from.

Some of the things you mentioned seem unfathomable coming from Canfield Schools.
I can't imagine Parents putting up with such things.

Computers benefit every child's education ... we are in a time where computer skills are a necessity.
I think Tara is on to something here ..... :-)

As for you, Strollo ... well ... I can't put it on this forum! ;-)

We all recognize Canfield, as a community, is quite affluent. However, there are certainly students attending in Canfield who could benefit from a fund for school supplies. Especially for families with more than one student, the strangling expense of supplies at the beginning of the year can jeapordize their financial stability and even force some families to do without life necessities. There ARE needy children in the school district. The staff knows exactly who they are.

So how was that rockin' group The Limbs at Cedars on Fri. Who all went? I want details!!

Hello to all! Looking forward to seeing everyone in November. Does anyone know what happened to Richie Colona????? I went to the JVS junior and senior years and now I see he is not listed with our senior class. Did he move away before graduation or something?

rich colonna went to Fitch senior year. he's a mahoning co. sheriff, i think.

06/09/08 10:48 AM #78

Howard Windt

Well, needless to say, the Limbs kicked some ass and took no prisoners!
John was right in saying that he sounds just like an entire band. He sounded great. The video on my space just has poor quality and serves him no justice!
There were a few people there. The list goes as follows: Tony K, Mike K, Colleen K, Jim D, Michelle S and husband, Tim M, Angelo P and Scott Duchess from class of 87.
It was a good time. If you get a chance to see him, please do so because you will be surprised that it is only one lone snapperhead from our class.

I just wanted to reiterate Howard's sentiments. Johnny Maz truely is one talented person. How one person playing a guitar and drums at the same time can make people dance is pretty amazing. It was great to talk to people I have not seen for the past 20 years. Here are some things I learned about my fellow classmates:

Asif (do not call me toni) Khan - he talks to anybody and everybody and he is really a fun guy to hang out with.

Angelo Peroulakis - Angelo is the smartest guy on earth..according to Asif. It was funny, Angelo and I were standing next to one another and we probably looked like to undercover Youngstown cops looking for underage drinkers.

Howard Windt - Howard has like 5 cars...and if Colleen was going to punch him one more time, they were gonna throw down....and I'd pay to see it!

Michelle Stack (Reed) - Michelle is way too addicted to this website. She knows all of your stories, pictures, educations, employment and hobbies.....just kidding, but she is on this site wayyyyyy too much.

Michael Koenig - Mike was the one person in the group that claims he cannot stay out late but was the last person to leave the bar.

Jim Dahman - Jim is going back to school to finish his education and he wants everybody to go waterskiing with him at his house on the lake....which sounds like fun to me.

Colleen Kelly (Kale) - She knows everybody.....I mean everybody. Your second cousins brother in law....yep...she knows him....

Michele Stack (Reed)

Tim,

I feel that addicted is too strong a word, perhaps highly enthusiastic would be better!

I missed that bit about waterskiing at Jim's...has anyone waterskiied lately? It's a butt kicker for like, a week afterwards.

Mazzucco was great, truly talented, and I still can't figure out how he plays two different drum beats with two different feet simultaneously. Amazing.

It was great to see everyone, looking forward to the next time!

But Michele, you did post your response 29 minutes after Tim posted his response. That might be addictive. (Like I care. I check this thing constantly also.)

Thanks for coming out Friday you crazy 88s, I had a great time- you're the best. None of us looks a day over 38, how bout that?!

To other classmates, for what it's worth: Four hours at Tippy will NOT be enough time to catch up with all your old maties. I spent roughly 2 hrs. with 8 classmates and didn't get to speak to anyone for more than probably 10 minutes (partly due to gig responsibilities), and that bummed me out.

Real quick-

Tim & Angelo, if someone wants to kill me, or tries to steal my gear, can I call you?

Colleen, when you offer to buy a drink for a guy, especially after not seeing him for 20 years, you must actually drink a drink with said guy. True boozing is participatory...

Howie, a snakebite is not a real drink. Man up.

Asif, you're absolutely positively right...

Hello everyone, I just found out about the website the other day. Hope all is well with everyone and can't wait to see you all in Novermber. I still live in the area--wish I new about the meeting at Cedars, I would have come.

Just wanted to drop a note....if anybody needs something to do this weekend. A friend of mine(He's Marc Oldfield and Paul Klein's friend as well) is acting in a play he wrote at the Oakland Theatre on West Boardman street in downtown Youngstown this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Our friend, Matt Rieger, is originally from trumbull county and is starting to get some acclaim in Chicago, where he lives and is starting his own production company. Marc and I saw the play while in Chicago and we both enjoyed it (yes I will speak for you marc). Unfortunately, I would not consider the play to be family friendly. The dialogue does not have swearing but it would probably make the average 12 year old bored out of their mind. I could be wrong, just my opinion.

If anybody is interested, please let me know. Kinda late notice but I thought I would get the info out there any way.

Julie, that's just Timmy for ya, he won't return my calls, emails or text messages, but he'll feel free to speak for me on a public forum. Whoever you check the play with, do NOT go with Klein, all he did was whine & moan the whole play like when we had to go to Powers Auditorium and see the symphony in the 4th grade. Truly annoying, the conversation went something like this:
PK: I should've stayed at the hotel
ME: That would've been nice, it'd be quieter
PK: My head hurts
ME: Shut up, Paul
PK: My stomach hurts, too
ME: I'm gonna punch you, soon
PK: ugh, goood, then maybe my head won't hurt so bad

Good times

I just received some very tragic news from my sister in Canfield. Steve Amer (graduated after us) was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident near Chicago. He was on varsity soccer w/ many of us our senior year. I don't know too many details being in FL but he is listed in the obits on Vindy.com. I just wanted to pass that along since I know that he was known in our class. Very smart, graduated from Notre Dame and incredibly nice guy...very sad.

Wow! I know from talking to my niece and visiting the High School that I would rate Canfield Schools as middle-of-the-road as far as buildings and equipment.

Not quite Mayfield heights where my step kids go to, but not as bad as let's say Youngstown, Warren, East Cleveland, and Cleveland.

my feelings are just as radical as they were when I was in High School. The state should be solely responsible for funding and equitable distribution of all resources including material and human to ensure kids get a fair chance.

It makes me sick to live next to Cleveland where big business and football/baseball stadiums have much greater priority than education.

By de-emphasizing education in combination with globalization (which eliminates the unskilled jobs), this country is vying to becoming a third world nation on the fast track.

We need to educate our kids (up through age 25) at all costs in high tech skills and the up-and-coming green science based business that will thrive to ensure energy freedom and the survival of the human race. This must be done before football, and soccer, and tax cuts for everyone - all sources of immediate gratification that only hasten our demise so we can have a workforce left to perpetuate the middle class and the American dream of the house with the white picket fence.

There's a lot at stake for our children that we can make a difference in the few years that we have left. We need to leave the petty parochialism and band-aid type solutions behind in favor of regionalism which with it brings more equality and the benefits of economies of scale.

I'm an American first, then an Ohioan, and lastly a native son of Canfield.

06/24/08 03:17 PM #91

Scott Emick

The simple answer is fund schools at the state level and share resources (human & material). I hope the supreme court of Ohio IMPOSES it because requiring legislature to fix the problem is a joke.

Regionalism helps to ensure more equal access to resources and leverages economies of scale. Northeast Ohio, as a region should improve it's schools or Ohio as a state, must improve education. In order to compete in the Global economy our kids must have access to technical skills and the sciences that will be used to create the new green economy. Creating opportunities for kids (and that means up to 25 years old) to get free education including College or vocational training to hold the kinds of jobs that can support a family and provide a solid tax base is essential.

As long as we as a nation keep putting sports, entertainment, gambling, and a whole host of other petty things before investing in our own education, training, and research, we'll continue to have problems.

The cost to have an equitable quality education system is not a lot.

Where is Mitch Goodrich anyway when you need him!
