Our family moved to Sydney, Australia in November 1989.
My wife Connie, a former director at the NFA, clawed her way back into a managerial position at Australia's Immigration Department.
Two of my children have their own families. The two youngest ones earn good money but still enjoy the free meal, free laundry and free lodging at home. The unwritten rule is "kids move out when they get hitched".
I am the forever impatient mover. I have hopped from one company to another, finding it a challenge to lock horns with other Aussie managers. I find this the best way to increase my salary without waiting for a merit increase.
I don't know if I'll ever retire. I can't imagine myself being idle. The only things that could ever change my mind are the call to be a better grandad and if my son's business takes off that he would want my assistance.
Australia is one of the most beautiful places in the world. The pace is relaxed; the social security system is so good that our pensioners can afford to send money to Manila; our public health system, although widely critized here, is still better than most industrialized countries and we have so many holidays in a calendar year!!!
I can organise a drinking session or a barbecue in the middle of the week. I can guarantee that I will be available to show you around, if you give me enough notice to organise a leave of absence. Or take a "sickie".
