After completion of school at Carbon, I attended Ranger Jr. College. After graduation, I enrolled at Texas A&M University and graduated in 1951 with B.S. degree in Agronomy & commission as 2nd Lt. in U. S. Army. Called to active duty within 6 weeks and served as a Company Commander from 1952-53 in the Korean War in combat with Communist Chinese.
Upon return to United States accepted employment as an Ass't. Co. Agent, Extension Service in San Antonio, TX. While there, I met my wife to be, Ida Jane (Janie) and we were married June 25, 1954.
Returned to Texas A&M in 1954 and completed M.S. degree in soil chemistry. Our first daughter, Cindy was born while there. Upon graduation, I accepted employment as area agronomist with the Extension Service at Weslaco, TX. Our second daughter, Nancy Gail was born in 1958. Relocated back to College Station in 1960 as a State wide Agronomist.
Was offered an Anderson-Clayton fellowship in 1962 and began work toward a Ph.D. degree which I completed in 1965. Accepted a position as a professor at Texas A&M University and retired in 1989. During the interval, I was transferred to Lubbock, TX in 1969 as Director of the Texas A&M Research Center located there and returned to the A&M campus in 1975 as a Professor in both resesarch and teaching.
I continued to remain in the Army Reserves after returning from the Korean War and retired in 1978 as a Lt. Col.
As indicated elsewhere, Janie and I have four grandchildren, Jennifer, David, Matthew & Michael which we communicate and visit with regularly and "really" enjoy.
After retirement, Janie and I have travelled, having visited much of the United States and several of the countries in Europe, including Germany, France, U. K., Italy, Switzerland, Scandinavian nations and Russia. I was also asked to serve as a consultant on a team sent to Russia to advise them on food crop production. That was a very interesting trip which showed the austere conditions that exist in Russia.
Both Janie and I teach a Sunday School class at the First Baptist Church in Bryan. Janie is active in several volunteer activities including serving as a Docent at the Bush Presidential Library located on the University campus. I have continued as a member of the Kiwanis club and am involved in several of their projects such as building ramps on homes of disabled people.
We both enjoy visiting in Eastland, attending church at the Mangum Baptist Church and participation at our Carbon School campus.
