School Story

Because of my lack of interest, focus and commitment in high school, it should come as a surprise that I spent the next 35 years after high school in academia as a student and professor. Not wanting to go to Vietnam was the initial motivation but I later came to love learning and teaching others.
It has been a rewarding and life changing journey. I have taught at UNI, Iowa State, Arkansas State, Upper Iowa, and Kirkwood. I also worked at the U of Iowa as a Research Scientist in the Center for Addictions Research.

I must have touched a few students along the was as I was twice in Who's Who Among America's Teachers and in Who's Who World Wide and inducted into Phi Beta Delta, the Honor Society for International Scholars for my international research work.

My educational journey provided me the opportunity to work and live in Puebla, Mexico, The Hague, Netherlands, and Lusaka and many other places in Zambia. My time in Zambia was life changing in many respects. Not only did I learn a great deal about a fascinating culture and meet many interesting people, I met the most wonderful person God has ever created and had the good fortune to become her husband. We had our wedding dinner in the home of the man who would became the Prime Minister of Namibia.

So, my academic life has been a rewarding experience and much better and more rewarding than I could have thought coming out of high school.

Michael Duggan Obituary

Here is Michael Duggan’s obituary. Please accept Echovita’s sincere condolences.

It is always difficult saying goodbye to someone we love and cherish. Family and friends must say goodbye to their beloved Michael Duggan of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, who passed away at the age of 73, on May 10, 2022. You can send your sympathy in the guestbook provided and share it with the family. You may also light a candle in honor of Michael Duggan or send a beautiful flower arrangement to the funeral service.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, May 15th 2022 from 11:00 AM to 1:30 PM at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories (4200 1st Ave NE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52402). A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, May 15th 2022 at 2:00 PM at the same location.
