Ronald Howard Pence
March 16, 1939 - October 5, 2019
Ronald Howard Pence, 80, of Matthews, died at home on Thursday, October 5, 2019, after a long battle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
He was born March 16, 1939 in Washington, DC, the son of the late Louise Brickhouse Pence and Roy Howard Pence. He was raised in Charlotte and was a 1956 graduate of Harding High School, where he played football, basketball and baseball. He attended N.C. State University and Charlotte College (now UNCC) and served in the United States Air Force from 1958-1962, stationed at Hickham Field on Oahu, Hawaii.
Ron was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church for nearly 50 years, serving his church family as an elder and lay minister for decades. He worked in automobile sales for 45 years, retiring from Lincoln-Mercury in 2008. After his retirement, Ron served as an officer, and later as the president, of the Harding High School Alumni Association. He enjoyed fishing and gardening, and most especially his grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Ron was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 50 years, Cecilia Adams Pence; his son-in-law, Al Broome; and his sister, Jacqueline Pence Griffin.
He is survived by his son, Howard Pence, and his wife Julie, of Mint Hill; daughters, Melanie Pence Broome and Allison Pence, both of Matthews; grandchildren, Carson Pence of Chapel Hill, Natalie Broome of Greensboro, Jackson Pence of Tallahassee and Christian Broome of Cullowhee; and his sisters, Louise Pence Nordman and her husband, Bob, of Indian Land, and Mary Pence McCall of Charlotte.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 12, 2019 beginning at 1:30pm at Ascension Lutheran Church. Funeral Service will begin at 3pm with the Rev. Steven E. Newberg presiding. Interment will follow at Sharon Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the Ascension Lutheran Church Endowment Fund.

Patricia Smith Logan's husband, Ed Logan passed away on
Tuesday, February 12, 2019. He had been very ill
with COPD and had been on dialysis for a good while.
A military service is being planned.

Clyde Tracy Currie III
Clyde Tracy Currie III, 76, of Charlotte, passed away on July 16, 2018. Tracy was born in Union, SC on July 2, 1942, son of the late Clyde Tracy Currie, Jr. and Helen Ruth Currie. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Doris Rice Currie. Survivors include son, Scott Currie and his wife, Teri, daughter, Dawn Reeves and her husband, Jason; sister, Suzanne Kollar; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Tracy was a member of the Charlotte North Rotary Club, Refrigeration Service Engineers Society and held North Carolina Mechanical Contractors License Number 9. He was a member of the Sea Scouts, Boy Scouts of America where he received the Order of the Arrow and hiked numerous miles on the Appalachian Trail. Tracy loved to camp, fish, gold-pan and spend time with his family.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, July 20, 2018 at Harrison United Methodist in Pineville with burial and reception immediately following at the Church. The family will also receive friends at the church for one hour prior to the service.

William Edward Proctor "Eddie", 76, died after a long battle with Alzheimer's on Thursday, January 25, 2018 in Charlotte, North Carolina. He was born on November 29, 1941 in South Carolina to William George Proctor and Edith Blackman Proctor, both deceased.
Ed graduated from Harding High School in 1960. He was selected as a Shrine Bowl player in 1959 and received numerous offers for football scholarships, he attended USC. He worked for Eastern Airlines in the reservation center until retirement. Ed was well-known around the Charlotte area for having his own concession business for over 30 years where he made many friends.
He is survived by his daughter, Edith (Proctor) Campbell and her husband Joseph Campbell of Belmont, North Carolina, and his grandchildren Bethanny, Alex and Sam Campbell and extended family. The family would like to thank the staff at Avante for being so kind and treating him with such dignity over the last few years. Visitation will be Saturday, January 27, 2018 at Noon at Forest Lawn West. There will be a celebration of life service at 1:00 pm in the Paul L. Helton Chapel of Forest Lawn West Funeral Home.

Dr. Thomas N Taylor, 75 of Huntersville, NC passed away at Levine & Dickson Hospice House on November 2, 2017.
Son of the late Wilbur N. Taylor and Nell Taylor was born on April 14, 1942 in Charlotte, NC. Dr. Taylor earned his B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from Duke University, his M.B.A. from the University of Pittsburgh and continued his education at N.C. State to earn his PhD.
Dr. Taylor began his career at Duke Power as an Electrical Engineer. He worked for Wachovia as a Systems Analyst. Returning to Duke Energy he worked for 35 years as an Economist. After retirement he became a Professor of Economics at UNCC.
Dr. Taylor played baseball for Duke University and coached little league. He was very active at First Baptist Church of Charlotte serving as a deacon and a Sunday school teacher for 20 years.
Dr. Taylor is survived by his wife Mary Ann; sister Susan Trull; daughter Lori Taylor Spargo and her husband, Rick; sons Jeffrey N. Taylor and his wife Cindy Garcia-Bennett and Kenneth B. Taylor and his wife Stephanie; grandchildren Christopher and Wesley Spargo, Sophie, Mia, Phoebe, Bea, Valentina, Charlotte, John, Sam and Calvin Taylor who loved their G-Pa dearly.
The family will receive friends Monday, November 6, 2017 from 12:00 noon until 1:00 pm at First Baptist Church of Charlotte 301 South Davidson St., Charlotte, NC 28202. Betty Jean Elliott Thomas, 76, of Calabash, NC, died September 27th, 2017, at Grand Strand Medical Center in Myrtle Beach. She was born in Statesville, NC on November 17, 1941 to Thomas Harold Elliott and Louise Martin Elliott. She was a graduate of Harry P. Harding High School on Irwin Avenue in Charlotte where she served as a Cheerleader, sang in the choir and was Miss Harding and Homecoming Queen in 1959. Betty is survived by her four beloved children, Robert Thomas, of Calabash, Dana Thomas of the home, Richard Thomas of Pensacola and Michael Thomas of Charlotte; sister Nancy Elliott Newton of Charlotte (Frank); granddaughter Morgan Thomas of Pensacola and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents and a sister Patricia Elliott Howell. Betty was a talented artist and worked for years for Belk Stores and Peebles stores as a display artist. She retired from her own floral design business, Fourth Ward Florist which she started with her sister Nancy. Her ashes will be interred next to her parents in a simple graveside service at Forest Lawn West at 11am on Monday, October 2, 2017.

Kay Biggerstaff Anderson, age 75 of Fort Mill, SC passed away peacefully on July 4, 2017 from complications of heart failure. Kay was born to Joseph and Ruby Biggerstaff in Charlotte, NC on June 1, 1942. She graduated from Harding High School in 1960 and went on to work in the corporate office of Winn Dixie for many years. Mrs. Anderson is preceded in death by her husband Harold Winfield Anderson and is survived by her sister Charlotte Winslow (Leigh), daughter Christian Tison (Carey Sims), and stepdaughters Traci Anderson (Tom Merrick) and Nikki McGee (Matt). Kay had three grand children Carter Tison, Grayson and Landon McGee. Kay will be celebrated in a private memorial service. Jim Zeman
James Henry Zeman, 75, died April 28, 2017, at his home in Charlotte, NC. He was born Feb. 25, 1942, son of the late Henry and Ruth Zeman. After graduating from Harding High School in 1960, he served in the Army from 1962-1967. He then began his rewarding career as a designer, doing everything from developing designs for theme parks to custom comics. He joined Powell & Partners Advertising as Sr. Art Director in 1987. Mr. Zeman was president of the Harding High Alumni, and enjoyed sailing, gardening, beekeeping and woodworking. He is survived by two daughters, Gina Michelle Wallace and Erin Elaine Looney; two granddaughters, Nicole and Julia Fox; a grandson, Trevor Wallace; and two brothers, Robert and Tommy Zeman. He was preceded in death by his brother Ray Zeman. A casual patriotic celebration of his life, will be held from 1-3 p.m. May 11, at Paw Creek Presbyterian Church, 7400 Mt. Holly Road. Clarence Eugene “Gene” Baker, Jr., 74, of Morganton died, Friday, December 30, 2016. Gene was born June 4, 1942 to the late Clarence Eugene Baker, Sr. and Annie Limme Fite Baker.
Gene is survived by his children, Christie Baker and fiancé, Keith Watson, Scott Baker and wife, Kim and Jessica Baker; grandchildren Lance, Peyton and Elliott; sister, Anne Hooper; and ex-wives, Stephanie Baker and Lynn Khal.

Stephen Woodrow (1942 - 2016)
Mr. Stephen Smith Woodrow (Steve), age 73, was called home to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 31, 2016. He was surrounded by his loving family at his side. Steve was born September 6, 1942 at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte. He was a Charlotte native and lived his entire life there. Steve leaves behind a legacy of "paying it forward." As a son of a hard working mother in times where women found jobs scarce, he was given help by strangers many times. He went on to work his way up to manager of Hoffman and Hoffman and along the way helped out any others deserving of a break. His help knew no boundaries and taught all of us who knew him to always treat others from all walks of life with the same level of respect. Steve was a man highly respected by his peers, with great integrity and the highest of morals. He was loved by everyone who knew him. We are thankful that he walked through our lives, even if it seems like it ended way too soon.
Steve was a 1960 graduate of Harding High School and attended Charlotte College, now known as UNCC. In 1965 he joined the Air National Guard where he served 6 years.
Steve was the only son of the late Daisey Mae Woodrow. He leaves behind a sister, Joyce Woodrow McKee, of the Lutheran Home in Oakboro. Steve leaves behind to cherish his memories, his wife of 52 years and high school sweetheart Sylvia Miles Woodrow. Together, they raised three children and have five grandchildren; Shannon Woodrow Frick and husband Darryl of Columbia, Stephen Todd Woodrow and wife Dawn of Blythewood, Stacey Woodrow McLaughlin and husband Jared of Wingate. Steve was a generous and proud "Grandpa" to five beautiful grandchildren; Lindsay Miles Frick (24), William Jacobs Frick (11), Emily Grace Frick (11), Andrew Walker Frick (6) of Columbia and Sydney Kate Woodrow (11) of Blythewood, and all will miss his kindness and generous ways. God blessed Steve with loving children that, with the help of Lia from Hospice, cared for him around the clock and saw to his every need. Steve never had a brother but God gave him one in his brother- in- law Harvey Miles. Harvey was many things to Steve but most importantly, he was Steve's medical advocate. Harvey saw him to every doctor's appointment and was with him every step of the way during his 5 year battle with cancer. Steve leaves behind a loving sister - in- law Phyllis Miles Smith and husband Boykin of Spartanburg, his niece Elizabeth Smith Jaindl and husband Jeffrey of Spartanburg, nephews Michael Fred Smith and wife Karee of Charlotte and Douglas Curry Smith and fiancé‚ Rebecca Sink of Raleigh.
A celebration of life for Steve will be held at Sardis Presbyterian Church on Monday, April 4th at 11:00am. There will be a reception with time for visitation following the service in the fellowship hall. The interment will be held following the reception in the church cemetery.
The family would like to thank Dr. Scott Moss with MD-VIP. Dr. Moss was not only Steve's medical doctor but his friend as well. The family would like to thank Dr. Jim Boyd with Oncology Specialists of Charlotte and his entire staff for their loving care. The family would also like to thank Dr. Herzog and his staff with the Fachklinik in Nidda, Germany for their care during the three trips Steve and Sylvia took for treatment not offered in the United States. Lia Allen with Community Home Care and Hospice walked into our lives and guided us every step of the way. Lia made daily home visits, was accessible at all times and was with him when he passed. The family sincerely thanks her for all she did. Steve was very fond of her and made sure to get up and greet her each time she visited.

Elinor Harris Moore Davis, 72, of Madison Heights died peacefully on Saturday, March 28, 2015 at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Elinor was born on September 10, 1942 in York, S.C., to the late Margaret and Hall Harris. Twice married, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Thomas D. Moore, and her second husband, David L. Davis. She graduated from St. Andrew's Presbyterian College in 1963 with a degree in French. She continued her education at James Madison University in Library Science in 1968 and at Lynchburg College in 1977 with a M.Ed. in Reading Education. After moving to Lynchburg, Elinor began work as a French teacher and later as the assistant librarian at Virginia Episcopal School and retired from that position in 2004 after 35 years of service.
Elinor was accomplished at teaching toddlers and children and for decades gave much of herself to her Sunday school class at Northminster Presbyterian Church in Madison Heights. She loved Jesus and was passionate about changing the world by teaching little children about his love. She was a faithful presence at all of her grandchildren's school and athletic activities. She was a loving and dedicated mother and grandmother and was generous with her time and talents.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, Henry Harris, and one sister, Sue Dotson.
Elinor is survived by her children, Margie Moore Caroll and her husband, Stan, of Amherst, Ian Lynn Moore and his wife, Debbie, of Monroe and; Nine grandchildren, Noelle Moore Funk, Ian Moore II, Catherine Moore Hammer, Margaret White, Natalie Carroll, Stephanie Carroll, Thomas Carroll, and Jackson Moore; great grandchildren, London Moore, Ian Moore III, Marie Funk and, soon to be born, Adalynn Hammer; her sisters, Marcia Harris, Johnnie McCord, and Rebecca Kosztyo and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service is scheduled for Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. at Northminster Presbyterian Church in Madison Heights, with Pastor Jeff Porter officiating. The family will receive friends following the service until 8:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend and celebrate her life.

Thomas W. Little "Tommy" CHARLOTTE - Mr. Thomas W. "Tommy" Little, age 74, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Monday, May 12, 2014, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, NC. He was born March 22, 1940, in Mecklenburg County, NC, the son of the late Ward and Janie Elizabeth Price Little. Mr. Little was a Security Officer in Charlotte, NC. In the past, he was very active in the Explorer Post 23 where he was known as "DooLittle". He was also known for helping his wife with teaching the toddlers Sunday School Class at East Baptist Church. Mr. Little is survived by his wife: Frances P. Little of the home; two daughters: Cheryl Little Maney and husband Johnny of Concord, NC and Frances Annette Little of Charlotte, NC; two grandchildren: Christopher Maney, Megan Maney Goss and husband Adam of Lexington, NC; one great-grandchild: Luke Goss; one brother-in-law: Elijah "Jack" Parker of Waxhaw, NC; one special nephew: Dalton Michael Knight of Waxhaw, NC; one brother: Douglas Little and wife Gerrie of Charlotte, NC; one sister: Sheila Payne of Darlington, SC; numerous nieces and nephews. Don Griffin, 73, of Eatonton, died Tuesday, March 5, 2013.
He was born in Charlotte, N.C., Feb. 17, 1940, to the late Curtis and Janie Crump Griffin.
He served in the Army Special Forces and was honorably discharged in 1964. In 1965 he married Diane Case. He graduated from the University of North Carolina, Charlotte, and was president of multiple manufacturing companies in the Atlanta area.
He worked as a civil engineer for 25 years, until 1990, and he had lived in Eatonton since 1995.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Eatonton, where his service included work on the finance committee.
He served on the Board of Equalization, was secretary for the Elks Lodge, served on the board of Putnam Christian Outreach, and was secretary of Lake Oconee Buskers Club of Milledgeville.
He is survived by his wife, Diane Griffin; sons, Ron Griffin and Robb Griffin, both of Dallas, Texas; granddaughters, Michelle, Haley, Addison and Reese Griffin; and grandson, Blake Griffin.
A memorial service will be held Friday, March 8, at First United Methodist Church in the Historic (old) Sanctuary at 11 a.m.
The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to First United Methodist Church.

Cecilia Adams Pence CHARLOTTE - Cecilia Adams Pence, of Charlotte, passed away Tuesday, February 19, 2013, at Southminster. She was born September 6, 1942 in Charlotte, North Carolina, daughter of the late Cecil and Dot Rankin Adams. She graduated from Harding High School in 1960 and was voted "friendliest". She maintained many relationships later in life thru the HHS Alumni Association. Cecilia was an active and longtime member of Ascension Lutheran Church where she volunteered with the preschool and Room at the Inn program along with countless others. She was outgoing and deeply devoted to her family and was a wonderful wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend who will be dearly missed. Surviving are her loving husband of 50 years, Ronald Pence; children, Melanie Pence Broome and husband Al Broome, Howard Pence and wife Julie Pence, and Allison Pence; four grandchildren, Natalie and Christian Broome and Carson and Jackson Pence; sister, Donna Hager and husband Bruce; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 11:30 am until 1:00 PM Friday, February 22, 2013 at the church. James A. Green "Jimmy" 1940-2013 CHARLOTTE - James A. Green, 72, passed away February 20, 2013. Mr. Green was born September 28, 1940 in Charlotte, NC where he resided until death. He attended Harding High School and graduated in 1958. He was a veteran and served in the US Navy. He operated Green's Lunch on 4th Street with his Mother Mary Green. He also worked at Folger Buick and retired as a DMV license examiner. He is a member of Crosspoint Worship Center. James ministered to troubled boys for twenty-six years at Stonewall Jackson Training School in Concord, North Carolina. He was the son of the late Robert L. Green, Sr. and Mary Wallace Green. He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert L. Green, Jr. Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Patricia Kirksey Green of Charlotte, NC, his sister Carolyn Green Clontz of Gastonia, NC, Uncle Thomas McNeil Wallace of Monroe, NC; nephew, Darren M. Green and wife Regina Green of Charlotte, NC, niece Caroline Green Benton of Charlotte, NC and great nieces. Jimmy was a wonderful husband, brother and a great friend to many. Terry E. Gordon FORT MILL - Terry E. Gordon of Fort Mill, SC went home to heaven on February 1, 2013, at the age of 71. A native of Charlotte, NC he spent nearly all of his career in the land surveying industry. His greatest contribution was to the many lives he touched at Pineville Church of the Nazarene as a Sunday School teacher, youth choir director, board member and friend. He is survived by his wife Faye; son, Scott; daughter, Aletha; grandchildren, Amanda, Rachel, Bethany, and Blake; great grandson, Riley; mother, Draper, and sisters, Margaret, Joyce, and Donna. He was preceded in death by his father Samuel E. Gordon. John Larry Kiser MATTHEWS Class of Harding High School 1959 - John Larry Kiser, 72, of Matthews passed away on September 19, 2012, after a long illness. Larry was born in Charlotte on December 8, 1939 to the late John F. and Johnsie A. Kiser. He was an active member of Harding High School class of 1959, still in touch with classmates, reminiscing about his days playing football. Larry loved to travel with his family and enjoyed world travel to places such as Russia, Spain, London, Alaska and Hawaii and quick trips to the beach or mountains. He was an avid fisherman, arrowhead hunter, rock and stamp collector, Civil War buff and also enjoyed vintage cars, 50's music and metal detecting. He thoroughly enjoyed his years in the convenience store and deli business, interacting with his many 7-11 and Harris Teeter customers over many years. Larry will be remembered for his never ending wit and ability to make people laugh in any situation; he was loved by many and will be greatly missed. Larry is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Gayle; daughters Allison Kiser and her husband Todd Busch and Melanie Kiser and fianc‚ Philip Herrin. He is also survived by special aunts, Edna Duckworth, Myrtle Chastain and Sarah Puckett; sisters-in-law, Joann Gainey, Gwen Gainey and Peggie McNeil; special brother, Donald Copeland and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Special thanks to all the aides and doctors that provided loving care for Larry over the last few years. Rev. Charles W. Smith LAKE WYLIE - Rev. Charles W. Smith, of 875 Bonum Road, Lake Wylie, SC died May 17, 2012 in Rock Hill, SC. A long-time resident of Mecklenburg County, NC, he retired from the restaurant business, having owned and operated several food establishments, as well as various other businesses. He was a member of Charles M. Setzer Lodge No. 693, the York Rite, the Scottish Rite, Oasis Temple, the Allied Masonic Degrees, Knight Masons, York Rite College No. 78, the Order of The Bath, the Order of Corks, the Grand College of Rites, The Mecklenburg Shrine Club, National Fecerated Craft, No. 134, and many other affiliated Masonic bodies; having presided over most of them. He was an Honorary Member of several North Carolina Masonic Bodies, and of several other states. His greatest love was his relationship with his family and with God. On February 16, 1975, he answered God's call to the ministry was licensed to preach on March 16, 1975, by Durham Memorial Baptist Church, and ordained on February 15, 1976 by Newell Baptist Church, and while serving as Associate Pastor. He graduated from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary on Mary 14, 1977. The funeral will be 1:00 pm Sunday, May 20, 2012 at Lake Wylie Baptist Church with the Rev. Alan Smith officiating. Interment will be in Forest Lawn West Cemetery, Charlotte, NC. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Mr. Smith was born March 17, 1921 in Union County, NC, to the late Will E. and Nimmie Loretta Stewart Smith. He was the widower of Margaret Neal Hucks Smith and was a Navy WWII Veteran. He was also preceded in death by his son-in-law Bill Payne. He is survived by one son, Charles Larry and wife Gloria of League City, TX, daughter Judy S. Mr. Hodges, 91, of Charlotte, died Sunday, January 22, 2012, at his residence.
A graveside service will be held 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 25, at Sunset Memory Gardens.
Mr. Hodges served with the Merchant Marines during World War II and received the Atlantic War Zone Medal. He retired after a long career in the textile engraving industry in Charlotte. Mr. Hodges was preceded in death in August of 1995 by his wife of 44 years, Iris C. Hodges.
He is survived by four children, Bonnie H. Overman of Concord, Joe Christenbury, Vivian C. Ouimet and husband, Roger, and Vickie C. Mr. Burch, age 69, of Winter Park, FL and formerly of Charlotte, passed away Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at the Courtyard Senior Living in Johnson City, TN.
Mr. Burch was born in Charlotte, NC and son of Rosa Lee Burch, Charlotte, NC and the late John Burch.
He was a US Air Force veteran.
Mr. Burch received a bachelor's degree from Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC and was in the class of 1960 from Harding High School in Charlotte. He retired as a Computer Software Engineer for Xerox. He was their International Liaison and Chief Software Engineer. He enjoyed traveling the world and loved to share his adventures.

He was an avid fisherman and NASCAR fan. He grew up in Charlotte and lived there until he moved to Chapin with his sister and family.
Mr. Lazenby is survived by his daughters, Wendy Todd of Albany, GA and Jennifer Cole of Charlotte; sisters, Lavonda King (Jim) of Chapin, Freida Jackson of Charlotte, NC, Joanna Dority of Ft. Mr. Miller, age 42, of Charlotte passed away at home from this life to his heavenly home on Monday, September 27, 2010. He was born April 10, 1968 in Charlotte, North Carolina, the son of Tommy R. Miller and Janice Randolph Miller. He graduated from Olympic High School and attended NC State University and Central Piedmont Community College. Ray was a gentle, quiet, caring, humble, lovable giant of a person with many gifts and talents. He was always willing to help anyone. He loved sports, especially the Panthers, racing, gun shows, and working on his Monte Carlo and many other cars with his best friend, Thomas Lewis. Tom and his family were a very integral part of Ray's life. We rejoice that Ray was a believer in Jesus Christ as his Savior. We will all miss him immensely.
The visitation will be from 12:30 PM until 2:00 PM Saturday, October 2, 2010 at Calvary Church in the Chapel. A Celebration of Ray's life will begin at 2:00 PM with Senior Pastor, Dr. John H. Munro officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn West.

Born December 1, 1942 in Charlotte she was the daughter of Ruth Harmon Richey of Charlotte and the late Merrill Leonard Richey. She was a graduate of Harding High School and Queens College and a member of Sunset Road Baptist Church.
Memorial services will be conducted 4:00 p.m. Sunday September 26 at Sunset Road Baptist Church with Rev. Steve Bass officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the church.

James Gold Cornette, 67, of Ocracoke, NC comfortably passed from this world to the next on September 3, 2010, leaving a wake of giggling nurses and healthcare providers shaking their heads. He was the son of Grady and Elaine Cornette, and husband of the incredibly tolerant Rebecca Swanzey Cornette. James grew up in Charlotte, where he was a star baseball player and athlete in high school and college. He was on his way to the major leagues when knee injuries sent him down his other pathway as a teacher. He taught in tough Charlotte City Schools before settling with his young family on Ocracoke, where he and Becky raised their three boys. He completed his 30 year career as a teacher, teaching from one generation through the other at Ocracoke School.
James lived his life by surrounding himself in fun, sarcasm and humor, always first draw with the one liner. He lived to poke fun with, or brighten the moment of anyone having a bad day. A talented closet artist, he painted and drew Patrick and “Spongesquare Bobpants,” creating their new adventures to the delight of his grandkids. James always had a soft spot for anyone in need, and was a champion for the underdog. He was actually seen negotiating Mexican street vendors up on their prices because he thought they needed the additional pesos.
He is preceded in death by his parents and wife. He is survived by his brother Milton (Myrtle) and family of Charlotte, his sons, Jim (Ellen) Cornette of Hampstead, Eric (Katie) of Fountain, and Daniel (Patricia) of Boone. He is missed tremendously by his family, but especially by his grandkids Lisa, Pedro, CJ, Frazer, and great grandkids Spencer and Camden.
His legacy remains within all of the hearts that he touched, as well as the school kids that he worked to start their lives out “Tipper Topper!” A Celebration of James’ life will be held at 3:00 pm on Thursday, September 9, at Ocracoke United Methodist Church. There will be a time of Visitation from 2 to 3:00 pm, immediately prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Ocracoke School College Fund, P.O. Box 1277 Hampstead, NC 28443.

Coach William Jennings has passed away

Mr. Jennings of High Point, NC and formerly of Charlotte, NC, died August 22, 2010. Mr. Jennings was born in Williamson, WV, on August 25, 1919. In high school he was an all state football player. One of the most memorable games of his high school career was when he scored the only touchdown and kicked the extra point in the West Virginia State North South football game played on New Year’s Day 1937. In 2002 Mr. Jennings was inducted into the Williamson High School Hall of Fame. Mr. Jennings was a graduate of West Virginia University, where he played football. William was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity and served on the School’s Athletic Board. After college Mr. Jennings taught and coached football in Mt. Hope, West Virginia, before moving to Charlotte in 1951 where he became a teacher and a football coach at Harding High School until his retirement in 1977. During Mr. Jennings’ coaching career at Harding, the football teams won a number of conference and state championships. Mr. Jennings was a long time member and elder of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Charlotte. He served the church as a Sunday school teacher and as a Superintendent of the Sunday school. For a number of years he was an active member of the Lions and Optimist Clubs. After moving to High Point, NC, Mr. Jennings was active in the Culler Senior Center and sang in the Happytones Chorus. Mr. Jennings is survived by his son, William James Jennings Jr. and wife, Sharon of High Point, NC; grandchildren, Davis Jennings and wife, Jerillyn of Wake Forest, NC, Shelby Jennings Burton and husband Joe of Chicago, IL; and a great-grandchild, Carr Jennings of Wake Forest, NC. The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Friday, August 27, 2010 at Hankins and Whittington Funeral Service. Coach Dave Harris has passed away

Guys,
I just learned from my older sister Joyce Helms that Coach Dave Harris passed away
today at about 1:30 PM. I think Joyce said Dave was 86 years of age. The Coach and his
wife had been married for 65 years.
Joyce had received a phone call from Dave’s wife, Mary Arden Harris, this afternoon
that Coach Harris had cancer, but it was in remission, and he unexpectedly started
to hemorrhaging and developed other issues and passed on very quickly.
As a matter of interest, Joyce and Mary Arden were life-long friends in high school
and have remained close through the years. They graduated from Harding in 1944.
As I recall, Jimmy Caldwell played football for Coach Harris at Harding and he had to
know firsthand the caliber of man the Coach was. There is no telling who many lives
Coach Harris changed over the years. He was truly a southern gentleman.
In any event, I wanted to make you guys aware of Coach Harris’ death. I hope you
and your families are doing well and that you will have an enjoyable summer. I am
looking forward to the Class Reunion in September.

Dave Harris of Charlotte died Tuesday, July 13, 2010. He fought his battle with cancer and its complications with the same optimism, courage and determination to win that he used in all areas of his life.
A service to celebrate the life of Dave Harris will be held at the First Baptist Church Charlotte, 301 South Davidson Street, on Friday, July 16 at 11:00 a.m. with Dr. Mark Harris and Reverend Michael Cummings officiating. A reception will be held in the Fellowship Hall immediately following the service. The burial will be private. Dave was born in Trap Hill, N. C. on July 19, 1924. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, teacher, coach, administrator, friend, athlete and mentor. His family was his greatest joy. He took tremendous pride in his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He also enjoyed keeping up with his former athletes and students. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Mary Arden Harris; his daughter, Arden Browder and husband Ty; his son, Andy Harris and wife Sherry; his grandchildren: Liz Carroll and husband Robby, Leigh Arden Beck and husband Joey, Charlotte Harris, and Christine Harris; his great grandchildren: Burton Carroll and Harris Carroll; his step grandchildren: Chad Browder, Klista Browder and Valerie Wooten; and his step great grandchildren: Zach Wooten, Hunter Wooten and Trey Wooten. In addition to his parents, David and Sallie Harris, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Sarah Bass and Kathleen Harris. For more than 60 years, he was an active member of First Baptist Church Charlotte where he had been an ordained deacon and served on numerous committees. He was a member of the Smith Alexander Men's Sunday School Class where special life-long friendships were formed.He grew up in Statesville and graduated from Statesville High School where he was an all-state and all-conference football player. He attended Wake Forest on a football scholarship and played football under Peahead Walker and basketball under Murray Greason. He played for Wake Forest in the first Gator Bowl. He was named to the All-Southern Conference team, to the first team AP All-America Blocking Team and was an honorable mention AP All-American. Dave graduated from Wake Forest and earned a BS degree. He later received a master's degree from Appalachian State University. He was the third draft choice for the Detroit Lions in 1946 and was a starter for the Charlotte Clippers Professional Football Team for two years. Dave's career of 45 years in education began as a teacher, coach and athletic director at Thomasboro High School and continued at Harding High School for the next 20 years. His Harding coaching years included 35 consecutive football wins and back to back football state championships. Harris coached eight high school All-Americans and 73 of his players received full college football scholarships. For the next 24 years, he worked in athletic administration as the Charlotte- Mecklenburg School System Director of Athletics. During that time, many components of the school system athletic program were nationally recognized. He was instrumental in adding girls sports in the schools, in beginning a sports medicine program in the school system and in expanding athletic facilities. His volunteer service to local, state and national organizations included membership on the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Clubs Council, the Governor's Board of Athletes Against Crime, the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Board of Directors and the National Federation of High School Directors of Athletics Advisory Board. He was a past president of the Optimist Club, the Lions Club, the NC Coaches Association and the NC Athletic Directors Association. He served for 40 years in different capacities for the Shrine Bowl. He was honored by being named the Honorary Chairman of the 50th High School Shrine Bowl All-Star Game. He was a long time member of the North Carolina Association of Educators. He received the American National Red Cross Certificate of Merit in recognition of saving a child's life. In recognition of his community service, Dave received the Optimist Golden Circle Award, the Charlotte Rotary Club Public Service Award and the Charlotte Athletic Club Humanitarian Award. Among his sports honors were head coach in the East-West All-Star Football Game and North Carolina head coach and Athletic Director of the Shrine Bowl. He was twice named North Carolina High School Football Coach of the Year and was also named National High School Athletic Director of the Year, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Sportsman of the Year and North Carolina Athletic Director of the Year. The North Carolina High School Athletic Association named him North Carolina Athletic Director of the Century. He was recognized by NCHSAA as one of the 50 most influential people in making a difference in high school sports in North Carolina during the 20th century and as the People's Choice Award for Athletic Director. He was selected Wake Forest Deacon Club Member of the Year in 1997 and served as Chairman of the Wake Forest Touchdown 2000 campaign that resulted in the construction of Bridger Field House.Dave was inducted into four halls of fame: North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame, Wake Forest Sports Hall of Fame, NC High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame and NC Athletic Directors Association Hall of Fame.After his retirement, Dave enjoyed traveling with Mary Arden, going to the beach and staying at their mountain home in High Meadows. He loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and enjoyed attending their activities. He looked forward to seeing and hearing from his former players and to eating lunch with his friends in the Five Plus One Lunch Group. He continued his volunteer work with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Retired School Personnel.Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Smith Alexander Men's Sunday School Class and members of the Five Plus One Lunch Group. Kay Biggerstaff's husband Harold Winfield Anderson died June 6th at Mercy Hospital.
FORT MILL -- Mr. Anderson, 72, of Fort Mill, SC passed away Sunday, June 6th, 2010 at CMC-Mercy. He was born September 26, 1937 in Washington, DC and was the son of the late Grace and Ralph Anderson.
Harold attended Harding High School. He was an avid supporter of Davidson College basketball and Washington Redskins football.
He is survived by his wife, Kay Biggerstaff Anderson; three daughters, Traci Anderson, Nikki McGee, and Christian Tison; three grandchildren, Landon and Grayson McGee, and Carter Tison; brother, Jerry Anderson and nephew, Jason Anderson.

I had been emailing with him since he listed his profile on the web site, and was truly saddened when his wife emailed that he had passed, still don't want to believe it, but unfortunately there's no choice, we had what I feel was a special bond.

Rosa Lee Brandon Short
LAKE WYLIE -- Rosa Lee Short, 72, of Lake Wylie, SC, formerly of Rock Hill, SC and Charlotte, NC, received her promise of Eternal Inheritance on May 23, 2010. Heaven received a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, friend and one special Rose. Rosa Lee was born in York County, June 19, 1937 to the late Meek and Bell Brandon. She was a cancer survivor for 15 years and an inspiration for everyone she made contact with. She loved to cook and everyone loved to receive her great jellies. She was very active in her church and loved her church family.
She served proudly on many committees, but her biggest blessing came from one she helped form, TEAM KIDS. She loved working in the kitchen with all the workers but was so blessed when Ron Montgomery joined because she knew she could hand the reins to him to drive on.
The family wishes to express sincere gratitude for all the excellent care provided for her by the care givers of Wayne Patrick Hospice House.
Rosa Lee's journey was peaceful with the care from one very special friend and daughter Karen West, 'nurse Betty.' Thanks.
She is survived by her husband of 38 years Walter Short 'Short,' daughter Sandra Neely of Lake Wylie, Buford Nalley and his wife Debbie of Lincolnton, NC, Wayne Short and his wife Yvonne of Fairview, NC, brother Phillip Brandon and his wife Bernice of Rock Hill, sister Linda Campbell and her husband Johnny of Rock Hill, seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, and many who called her friend.
Celebration of life will be 1:00 pm Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at Bethel Baptist Church, 6031 Charlotte Hwy., York, SC. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 11:00 to 1:00 at Bethel Baptist Church, York. Interment will be in Lakeview Memory Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Team Kids, c/o Bethel Baptist Church, 6031 Charlotte Hwy., York, SC 29745, or to Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House, 2275 India Hook Road, Rock Hill, SC 29732.

Remember Richard David Turner
Before Jesus was crucified He met with His disciples to encourage and comfort them. He wanted them to know that His death was a victory, not a defeat and that when they would one day face their own mortality they could draw hope from the fact that this life is not all there is. He encouraged them with these words from John 14:1-6:
"Let not your hearts be troubled.
You believe in God, believe also in me.
In my father's house are many mansions.
If it were not so, I would have told you.
I go to prepare a place for you and if I prepare a place for you
I will come again and receive you unto myself that where I am,
there you may be also. You know the way to the place I am going."
Thomas said to Him,
"Lord, we don't know where you are going
so how can we know the way." Jesus answered,
"I am the way, the truth and the life. No man comes
to the father except through me."
We extend our deepest sympathies to the family of Richard Turner. May God grant
them peace, assurance, grace and comfort in the difficult days ahead.
