May 14, 2011 KIT

May 14, 2011, was a rainy afternoon in Charlotte, the storms seemed to be hovering over the Open Kitchen or maybe it just seemed that way. We still had a very good turnout for the KIT gathering. Last count was about 28. Jan and Pat Power had planned to attend but had to cancel at the last minute due to a sudden illness that we hope is long over. Spencer and Linda had been expected but did not show, baby sitting, I think. Ben Gadd and Patsy did not attend and there was some concern that he had been personally advised of the date and time. Rumor has it that he does not do e-mail.

Vicki Christenbury Ouimet and Vivian Christenbury Huntley and their spouses and Frank Gay and his wife were first time attendees and were warmly welcomed. Vicki and Vivian brought their younger brother Joe and Frieda Bumgarner (coach Bumgarner’s daughter) who many knew and his company added to the conviviality of the evening. Frank Gay read a poem he had written about age and aging that everyone appreciated.

The Open Kitchen has not changed much over the last 50 years, in fact, I don’t think that it has changed at all. The food and service were very good. The table arrangement could have been better. At future events we need to try to find a more collegial seating arrangement.

Frank bought a carafe of Chianti for every table and it seems to have been consumed with much gusto. Marie Benton Rich, Kay Biggerstaff Anderson and Maxine Bost Lucki bought homemade cakes and desserts for everyone, what a delicious treat. We had a wonderful time reminiscing of times past and learning more of what friends have been doing since graduation.

Do plan to attend the next KIT gathering, “It’s a good thing”.

KIT Dinner  #1

On January 29, 2011 we had the first of many KIT dinners. It was at Captain’s Galley in Charlotte, NC. There were 35 to 40 in attendance. (Unfortunately we did not have an official sign in sheet). Bill Mitchell, our leader, and his lovely wife Carolyn had suddenly gotten sick and were not able to attend.

For a couple of hours it was as if time had stood still. Sure most of us have gotten wrinkles and a little fatter but the bonds that we formed while at Harding were still strong. There is never enough time to visit with everyone before it is time to go home. You feel a little younger and laugh remembering old stories and then it is time to adjourn until next time.

It was a great time!

I do hope that each of you can attend the next KIT dinner. Watch the WEB site for further info.

PS The food and service was great. Spencer Black sure picked a good place.
