School Story:

After Jr High, me and my next door neighbor, Toby Kellough and friend Tommy Skiles changed to CHS. After a few weeks Tommy went back to RBHS and I joined the ROTC Drill team where I learned how to shine boots and flip a M1 rifle. One day in ROTC class, senior Jim Bowen did not like the way I cleaned my rifle so he said Smith you and I are going outside. He was captain of the football team and a lot bigger than me. When we got outside he took off his shirt to fight and I was so scared I punched him in his nose which bled big time. It was a short fight and when we went back in the armory Sargent Jenkins looked at me then Jim and laughed. Little did I know about the Saint Elmo Rangers, you fight one you fight them all. A week later his younger brother Tommy picked a fight with me then later Gay Carter and much later Donnie Drew, it was one long year.

Nancy befriended my wife in her 1st year as a speech therapist with Hamilton county school system in 1974. Years later their friendship grew when Minerva had Nancy's nethews in the Murfreesboro school system.
