About five years after college, I moved to San Francisco where I taught school for another 30 years before retiring. My husband, daughter and I lived in Africa in the early 70s. I had a great experience teaching first grade in Kenya. I love exploring new countries and cultures. I've traveled across the U.S. and western Canada and through the years, I've been to Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Europe, India and China. I tried to learn Spanish in Mexico and Costa Rica but I was too old and never remembered anything. I never knew what anyone was saying!
Now I enjoy volunteering and attending writing classes. I'm writing my memoir about growing up in Chillicothe. It's my story to pass on to my grandchildren and other family members.
For my memoir, I've written about being called to the board to solve a geometry problem in Mrs. Beyerly's class. I had no idea in this world how to do it. So I stood at the board, a blank stare on my face and a piece of chalk frozen in my hand. I felt like I was in a Twilight Zone. Finally, she called on someone else to take my place. I stumbled to my seat, embarrassed and wishing I could disappear. I have never forgotten the image or the experience.
