Wasn't History Mr. Hartung?
I took the secretarial stuff...I really liked
Mrs. Cherry and Mrs. Brandt.
Also really liked Mr. Seeman in Science class.
Didn't take art class but I know Mr. Quick was a favorite of most of the kids. He wore this big hat and cape to
school.

I was at St. Thomas when Pres. Kennedy was shot. I remember the Principal coming into the room and whispering something to our teacher. The whole school was taken to church for Mass immediately.

I'll never forget watching the funeral procession and the
sound of the drums when they were marching.
It was like the world stopped moving that day.

Same kind of day when the space shuttle exploded and 9/11.
We will always remember where we were when we heard
the news of these events.

Diana Taylor (Beauleau)

It was Mr. Hartung - and the Spanish teacher's name was right also now that I hear it.

I remember the shuttle exploding - I was standing in the grass at the O&C Building at the Space Center. We all cried our eyes out. Our friends died that day..........moral was horrible there for months. Everyone tried to keep each other encouraged. We finally made it, but we never forgot. IF you ever get to come to KSC, go to the Visitor's Center. There is a large memorial there for them - each name is listed on it in lights. Very sobering. Each astronaut takes their lives in the hands of those that prepare the missions and light that candle in hopes that they will return safely.

Kathy Riehl (Regnier)

Hi - I remember Mr. Max Brady and Mr. Winkelman for history, Mrs. Nelson for Latin, Mr. Muchmore for English (I think) - I ran into him a couple of years ago - he was a favorite of my sister, Ginny. I remember Mr. Hartung but don't think I had him in any class. Does anyone remember Mr. Horvath from Science class - I remember how yellow his fingers were from nicotine.

05/26/09 08:37 PM #52

Kathy Riehl (Regnier)

Oh - and Susie, you reminded me - I took the typing stuff as well - but had Mrs. Pribble - do you remember her? She scared the hell out of me. Ha!

Dan Taylor

Kathy, I remember Mr. Horvath...He still scares me! When we were talking, or messing around, without warning he would slam the table in front of him and yell “PEOPLE!!” I got seated in the front row and sometimes he did that right in front of me, what a shocker! Everyone was instantly silent…I think we were all trying to breathe again, or we were checking to see if we had bodily injuries.

Susie Wallens (Covey)

Yes, Kathy...I remember Mrs. Pribble. From what I was
told, she would cut the girls fingernails off who had
long beautiful nails (was never my problem back then)
I loved Mrs. Cherry and Mrs. Brandt. They were both
really nice!! Mrs. Pribble was tough but a good teacher.

Does anyone remember Mr. Van Horn for math? He still lives
in the area I think. Ran into him a couple years back...
a bit grey but looked the same. He was really nice as well.

I only forged one "pass" in my whole four years of HS and
the Catholic guilt...got caught. I was trying to leave
a study hall (we sat in the auditorium) to have lunch
w/my future husband, Don. Jim Weaver took one look at the
pass and then at me and said "This isn't really from
Miss May is it???" I crumbled....detention after school!
Young love got me in trouble again!!

I was reading the posts about the Kennedy assassination and feel compelled to add that I was there in Mr. Domagala's room, too. (Hopefully, not one of those "moments" in history where all the people who SAY they were there totals more than the population of the city of CL !!! But I'm pretty sure I was there all the same.) Anyway, Mr. Domagala was a terrific teacher full of energy with a special way to connect with kids - very sorry to hear of his passing. And, if I recall correctly, the principal then, Bob Blazier (who is still active around Crystal Lake and someone I see on the golf course a lot but still struggle to call "Bob") come in and provide the whisper that something huge had happened. What I remember is one of the students in that class lived directly across the street and he asked her to run home and bring back a radio that we then listened to. I recall, too, hearing "Mr. Blazier" (see ... not kidding) make the PA announcement about an hour or so later that JFK had died. Also, even had the opportunity to meet JFK Jr a couple of times over the years. Once at the Chicago Democratic Convention at a party he hosted (yes, "Uncle" Ted, Oprah, Tom Brokaw, Tim Russert, Kevin Costner, Maria Shriver - no Arnold, of course - were there, too) ... talk about feeling like the whole world is a tuxedo and you're a pair of brown shoes !!! Then, another time at a small advertising lunch. Smart. Funny. Iconic. And, both times I couldn't help but "flash back" to Mr. Domagala's science class that day and remember being just a kid as he was - albeit he was a tad younger - when I heard the news.

I remember Mr. Horvath, had him for acouple of sciencs classes, He was a little unconventional, but I did learn alot from him. Looking back, he reminds me alot of a sociology, anthropology teacher I had at MCC, Marshall G. Hassenmiller, if you had him as a teacher you could never forget him. But I have to say, I also learned alot from him.

05/31/09 08:54 AM #57

Linda Benson (Good)

I too had Mr. Horvath...I remember those terrible yellow fingers!! I could never follow him in class. Let it be said that he forever changed my mind about science! I also had Mrs. Pribble..wow what a trip she was. Didn't do very well in her classes either. I had her for typing and shorthand and forget the shorthand, if you didn't get it the first time with her,you just didn't get it. I didn't get it!! I had Mr. Kloepfer for math and sat across from, Buddy Foster. Neither one of us was succeeding in his class so we decided we would cheat and of course we got caught. We both failed that class!!! Wow, doesn't look like I did very well in school at all, ah but not true. I loved English, Music and and in senior year, Sociology (that of course after I switched from American History second semester)and Gym class except for when it was shower time. The names of the two teachers escapes me now but I absolutely hated when they would stand there and hand us a towel. That was only freshman and sophmore year. After that, I figured if they wanted to fail me for not showering OH WELL!!!

Linda Parts (Tobin Remus )

Looking back at what we had to endure in PE class, it seems so wrong now! The two teachers handing out towels took our names as we ran out of the showers with a towel that barely could cover us... It was one reason we didn't look forward to high school when graduating from JR High! Very barbaric and totally unnecessary.

Kathy Riehl (Regnier)

I don't remember the names of the girls' gym teachers anymore either, but I DO remember when the high school paper included their names in its "On The Loveseat" section. ( I think B. Rehberg and K. Riehl were listed there at one time.) HOWEVER, when the gym teachers found their names in that particular issue, ALL copies were retrieved and, I guess, destroyed. Does anyone remember that?

06/01/09 11:57 AM #60

Linda Benson (Good)

I don't remember that issue at all...they must have pulled them very quickly!

06/01/09 12:59 PM #61

Rick Barchard

Susie, you are right Mr. Hartung was American History and he was one of the good ones I think.

Also I actually took Mrs. Cherry's typing class and got out of there at a whopping 42 WPM!

But I must say from what has transpired in the computer world, it has saved my kiester!

06/01/09 01:02 PM #62

Rick Barchard

Hey Linda Parts!

Mr. Miller was the guy! We were in his class together now that I think about it. His ex-marine mentality got the best of him sometimes. He not only threw erasers, he bombed somebody with a stapler!

He would also pick the guys up by the front of shirts and escort them out to the hallway!

06/01/09 04:00 PM #63

Linda Parts (Tobin Remus )

Hey Rick,,, I think you meant Linda Benson! Or Linda B... instead of Linda P......

06/03/09 04:54 PM #64

Rick Barchard

Oops, yep Linda Benson...Mr. Miller was the marine guy!!!

06/05/09 12:26 AM #65

Paul Fruin

You were a lot smarter than I Rick - I quit typing! Figured I'd never use it! :o) I wasn't planning on being a secretary! Big Mistake in class management!

06/05/09 07:47 PM #66

Diana Taylor (Beauleau)

It was Mr. Hartung's History class - it's there we sat and watched the JFK funeral and I cried.

I remember Mrs. Cherry and Mrs. Brandt's typing classes. I didn't think I would ever learn to type. Now I do it 8 hours a day!

06/06/09 05:54 AM #67

Jennifer Hughes (Saia)

Mr Miller was not the only teacher to throw an eraser! When Mr. Domagala taught 5th grade at Central, he tossed a few erasers across the room! He also would lower your test scores if you couldn't spell his name!!

06/06/09 01:33 PM #68

Ginny Kuehnert (Boss)

The names of the two gym teachers were Dietrich & McKay. They always had the blinds on their office window closed and we could only imagine what they were doing in there! I remember Mrs. Shurt (sp?)from our Freshman and maybe Sophomore years. She was really nice. It was a huge adjustmment getting used to the other two. I wonder what happened to them? My memories of Mrs. Cherry are when she used to monitor 105 Study Hall. She was really, really strict. You couldn't get away with anything. She always wore high heals and I can remember how she would tip-toe across the wooden floor, either to avoid loud walking or marking up the floors...I could never figure that one out.

06/06/09 02:14 PM #69

Linda Benson (Good)

That's right Ginny....Dietrick and MaKay. At least when they were in their office with the blinds closed they weren't handing out towels...they were quite the duo. I don't remember ever really seeing Mrs.Cherry smile. I am sure she did, just not in front of us. Now Mrs. Pribble if she had ever smiled, oh scarey!!! That woman had a face of stone especially in shorthand class. And then trying to learn how to type on those manual typewriters, I could never push the keys down hard enough to make an impression with the ink. As I recall, I didn't do well in any of her classes. Couldn't type then, can't type well now, but I get by!!!

06/07/09 03:52 PM #70

Ginny Kuehnert (Boss)

Linda, thanks for mentioning Mrs. Pribble. She was the one I was thinking about in 105 Studay Hall. I'm pretty sure I took typing with Mrs. Cherry and I still can't type without looking at the keys...hunt and peck all the way!

Debbie Visin (Hindman)

Ms. Dietrick and Ms. McKay lived in an apartment across from my grandmother. She watched them a lot from her window, and was convinced they had a "special relationship"! Do you remember the way they used to grab each other thru the gym curtains when we had 2 classes going at the same time? If they weren't lesbians, I would be shocked. They were creepy when they stared at everyone when they handed out towels - that was the worst part of p.e. I remember too that someone in my class brought her lunch to p.e., and one of those teachers took it and ate it because they said we weren't allowed to bring food to the locker room. P.E. goes down as one of my worst experiences in high school! I work in a high school now, and kids only have to take 1 year of p.e. if they don't participate in a sport, and they don't have to shower unless they want to!

06/08/09 06:08 PM #72

Debbie Visin (Hindman)

I forgot to add - I don't care if the gym teachers were gay or not - I'm the Gay Straight Alliance advisor at my school - I just object to the fact that they were mean people!
