Bette Jo Dedic

Bette Jo Dedic, affectionately known as BJ, passed away peacefully on January 18, 2025, in Lexington, Kentucky, due to complications from Myasthenia Gravis. Born on June 28, 1941, in Detroit, Michigan, she grew up to be a beacon of kindness and selflessness, touching the lives of many with her loving nature.
BJ graduated from Redford High School in Detroit, Michigan in 1959. She went on to graduate from Eastern Michigan University in 1962 with a Bachelor's degree in Home Economics and continued her academic journey at Purdue University, earning a Master's degree in Clothing and Textiles in 1974. Her passion for education and textiles led her to a fulfilling career at the University of Kentucky, where she served as the Cooperative Extension Specialist for Clothing and Textiles from 1974 until her retirement in 1998.
Throughout her career, BJ made significant contributions to her field, including serving on the American Society for Testing and Materials Committee for Textiles and Clothing. Her expertise and dedication were evident in her work, most notably in the nationally recognized computer database on Stain Removal and the comprehensive database of Notions Suppliers. BJ's publications and guidance have left an indelible mark on the industry, benefiting countless students and professionals.
Family was the cornerstone of BJ's life. She is survived by her spouse, Richard Parker (Dick) Dedic with whom she shared a loving marriage. Together, they built a life filled with joy and cherished memories. BJ is also survived by her three sons, Geoffrey Dedic(Gail); Christopher Dedic(Rhonda); Kenneth Dedic(Laura); Grandchildren: Stormy, Raven, Breanna, Skye, Natalie, Parker, & Tyler each of whom carry on her legacy of love and kindness; Sister Barbara Bo
She was preceded in death by her parents, Newell Ray and Lenora Waddington, who instilled in her the values of compassion and generosity that defined her life.
BJ's interests extended beyond her professional achievements. She found solace and pleasure in her garden, where she cultivated not only plants but also a sense of serenity and beauty that she shared with others. Traveling was another of BJ's passions, allowing her to explore the world and its diverse cultures. In her later years, she became an avid bridge player, a hobby that reflected her strategic mind and social spirit.
Those who knew BJ will remember her as a kind and selfless individual, always putting the needs of others before her own. Her gentle demeanor and unwavering support made her a beloved figure in her community and an anchor within her family. BJ's legacy is one of enduring love, a testament to the profound impact she had on the lives she touched.

Visitation for Bette will be Saturday, January 25th from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm at Milward - Southland located at 391 Southland Drive. A service to celebrate her life will begin at 3:00 pm with Todd Nelson and Brandon McGinnis to officiate.
