Pete was about 5'7", 140 lb. when we were Seniors is 1968. When Graham Sheffy and I struggled to weigh 80 lbs. as 7th grade football players, Pete was already about 5''6", 135 lb. and Coach Wilson put him at running back. One of our first opponents was the Olton Mustangs ( whose helmets had no face masks!) and my recollection is that Pete scored touchdowns the first three times he touched the ball. We thought we were really good, but I think Pete was just a man among boys, bigger and faster than any other 12 year olds. I visited Pete one day in about 1975 when he was an officer at First State Bank in Dimmitt and asked him why he didn't continue playing football after Jr. High and he told me it just wasn't as much fun when all the other boys got bigger and faster! I would never been able to 'memorize' all the poetry
in Ms. McMinn's English IV class without Gary's help! When we were about eleven or twelve in one of our P. E. Classes, we were paired up by height for a boxing exhibition at the gym where we played high school basketball. Gary was my opponent. Realizing I was probably outmatched, my father took me to see Joe Benson who had the Texaco station east of town because He had been a very fine boxer in the Army. With professional coaching, I thought I was super ready for my match against Gary. But when the bell rang, Gary was not impressed with my proper stance and proceeded to hit me with such a flurry of punches that the match had to be stopped for my protection!
