Christine and Mario: Believe it or not, I CLEARLY remember the incident with the bat. Honestly, Chris, I don't know how you survived. I thought that was the end of you.

Perhaps I'm the only one who remembers but once during a flag football game at Mac Arthur, Mario threw a desperation hail Mary pass deep down the field and the ball flew over my head. Miraculously, I stretched out my arms and the ball fell perfectly into my hands for a no-look effortless catch and sprint into the end zone. Unfortunaltely I never grew beyond scrawny to play real football.

Eugine! How's it going, former next door neighbor!

Again, I think Mario did me a big favor with that base ball bat. Who knows how I would've turned out if he hadn't knocked some sense in to my head?

Do you remember diging for SATAN in your back yard when we were little kids? We were convinced we were going to see an EVIL eye ball if we dug far enough.

Mary Gonzalez (Henderson)

Chris -- I completely remember the bat incident! Except instead of black eyes, didn't you initially have a HUGE black & blue goose egg on your forehead from it? I just know it was really scary as a kid! You're a big man for stepping up and apologizing after all these years, Mario... ;)

06/30/08 10:48 AM #431

Mario Loya

Eugene good catch and good memory. I'm glad Christine remembers the bat incident differently than you and Mary, because it did seem really bad. There was an enormous goose egg on her forehead and I really felt like an a$$. To make things worse (for me) was that immediately following recess I had choir class with Mrs. Hafen (Christine's mom). Actually a few months ago I recently retold the story in great detail to my 6 year old during a backyard batting practice session. He was getting into the bad habit or throwing the bat, so I took the opportunity to share a "life experience story" with him on the importance of why you don't throw the bat. I may have embelished the story to include blood and the police, but I think I got through to him.

Hello everyone.... yes, how was the mini reunion in El Paso yesterday?

I just got back from my 4 day girls trip to Vegas. It was great, but FYI 4 days is too much on a 37 year old body ha ha. Im paying for it this Monday morning! For example, went out Saturday night and didn't get back to the hotel till 8am Sunday morning... OUCH! When nothing closes, you never leave ha ha. Oh well, now back to reality. I had a beautiful time though and it is always fun to live like you are in college again, but even in college I never stayed out till 8am.

Hope everyone is doing well!

Mary Gonzalez (Henderson)

Welcome back Melissa! And thanks for the warning -- I've got a 4-day "girls only trip" to Vegas in a few weeks with my sister and my niece who just turned 21. Lord help us...

Too funny on the embellished bat story, Mario! I'm sure your son will never forget it!

How was the EP mini-reunion?!?

Rik Avalos

Melissa, welcome back from Vegas! Only girls can stay in Vegas that long. Guy trips have to be cut to just three days, because unless we're winning big, by the third day reality sets in and getting that extra gambling money (non-budgeted) at 4:00 a.m. on the last night with a huge buzz on, turns out to 'not' have been such a great idea.

Chris, I feel your pain. I decided in ninth grade at Ross, to catch a baseball with my face instead of my glove. This self-mutilation continued for a few months until I was able to see a professional and everything has turned out fine since then. I do agree, however, it did knock some sense into me and my baseball career was over as we know it.

Mario, How very responsible of you. Did you tell your son to not throw the bat when there's someone you like, or on the same team, behind you and only throw the bat after he's checked who's back there? Sometimes kids from the other teams could use a good conk on the head.

Disclaimer - for those of you who are parents and found my joke to Mario insensitive because I do not have rugrats, please know I am just being sarcastic and playful. :)

Gene, good to hear from you. Have you heard from Roger or Luis? Hope to see you at the reunion.

Dan, saw that you briefly mentioned cross country in one of your posts. If I remember correctly, in our senior year, the x-cross country team won regionals and came in fourth place at state. Gene, anyone correct me if I am wrong. I know x-country is a relatively unknown HS sport, but at least there was some sport success in the the class of 88.

John, I will sell you the originals. but they won't be cheap! LOL

Not that it will hold us back, but it never fails!! I have some really good pictures of a lot of you guys all dressed up as cheerleaders, but for some reason the site will not upload them. Elizabeth Abilez (Abilez)

Hey Melissa! Glad you had a blast! My mom was there sans the grandchildren and the pains in the butt-US-her kids!hahahaha
I will try to get to Aceitunas. Love this weather!!!
Does anyone remember when it snowed and the school district DID NOT call off school and there was like (for us down here)major snow? And then the next day they did call off school and there was no snow! Love el paso...
I was wondering if there were any people from Ross. You know the eighth graders from macarthur and ross still have that end of the year football game at Burges. It can be brutal. Ross students are kinda known for "alternative like kids" where as kids from macarthur are known as the "preps". Its just like the breakfast club in a way.

which brings me to sorta like a survey....which movie most touched the class of 1988?

I am sorry. I didn't post the time and place earlier. I am staying with my mom and don't have access to a computer. I ran into Maribel and she said she would try to go but she already had plans for Music Under the stars. It ended up being Ray, a friend of mine named Adriana and myself. We had a nice time. Maribel and i are hoping to meet for lunch on tuesday at olive garden but I m awaiting her call. Everyone is welcome. Of course, Maribel is still adorable. Ray will post the picture we took together because i dont have my cord to plug in my camera. Ray, I couldn't figure it out. I am too computer illiterate.

Becky are you going on thursday?

06/30/08 07:28 PM #444

Cristine Marie Hafen

Mary....oh, dear.....Vegas with a 21 year old? I get a headache just thinking about it. BUT HAVE FUN! I love Vegas......but only in small doses. Where are you guys staying? Someplace really cool?

Mario....You know the Hafen crowd could never be angry with the Loya kids....even if one of them did try to kill one's favorite (and only) daughter. But I think it's cool you used it for a learning experience for your kid. Just make sure you teach that boy how to slide straight in to the catcher and your work will be done with the youngling.

Pasty! How is it going with you? I was wondering if we were going to hear from you! Howya been all these years?

Is Asatuna's still around there in El Paso? I just loved that place.......so glad to know it's still there!

John Alvarez! Why do they keep picking on you?

Hey that story about the bat and not throwing is hilarious! I played softball during my high school years for the baptist church league. I loved it. I was playing 3 years ago and had my girls in softball also. My girls played for Coach Black as the Texas Sluggers and they were awesome to say the least. Of course fast pitch. We should have a game! We are not that old people! I remember one day my daughter grabbed my bat and a softball and went to the backyard. She was practicing to hit the ball. Well....she did! Right through the bedroom window! I ran outside and she was like "i'm dead!" and expecting me to kill her when instead I asked rather hurridely"did you hit the ball?" She said yes and I started jumping up and down and was so damn proud! I was screaming "you hit the ball! you hit the ball! That's great!" Needless to say that encouraged her to start on Coach Black's team. What can I say? She hit the ball!

Alright Chris, I will write on the forum! It has just been real busy at work and trying to keep up with my two boys. How crazy to read all the school memories! I must have been too busy playing volleyball or dancing with Amici that I just do not remember many of the things mentioned. I have enjoyed reading the forum. All of you are hilarious. If anyone visits Orlando, let me know. Who can remind me the name of the club (not school related) that part of the initiation was being kidnapped and had to wear the same clothes for the whole week? I remember that was the time that the yearbook committee decided to take pictures. Also, does anyone know how Mr. G is doing?Anyways, I am glad that all of you are enjoying your adulthood. I truly am enjoying my 30s.

Here is a pic from last night that Becky mentioned.

Liz, Do you remember Juan Portillo? He has been my best friend for over 32 years now. He drove a 1967 Fastback 390 GTA Mustang. Still has it. Why didn't you show up last night? I might be able to go to the lunch tomorrow and I should make it to Aceitunas on Thursday. Missy Holguin said she will go on Thursday and also Maria Tuck might go.
