Thanks, Angel for posting Mr. Estrada's info. He was a very special teacher and I know he would want us to remember him for his crazy personality and not for the choice he ultimately made. Suicide is very distructive and to the one that acts on it but to those they leave behind. Thanks Edna for adding that section to our page.

Edna that was a nice touch by adding a memorial page for the faculty. Very nice. Also I sont know i you know this, Mr. Dean Silva passed away about 8yrs ago. Give or take a few. He was our asst. principal.

I will always consider Wade a class of '88er, and I miss him, too. Such a great guy.

i'm afraid to start a tangent on this forum about first kisses, though.

Hi Everyone!!!!! Well I have been a lurker until now. I am so bummed about Mr. Estrada. I loved his sense of humor. I remember how he used to tell the guys " You all want virgins....but you're not doing anything to keep the population alive." He was something else.
It was I who left that message about Mrs. Harlien. She was a so positive.
Another member of the faculty passed away a bit ago. Mr. Bill Abilez. He taught the vocational class. I don't remember exactly what it was called but i took his class. He had such a pleasant smile and was a very sweet man.
On another note...I feel like such a loser!!!!I didn't get invited to Mario Loya's party! I remember him but I guess i wasn't cool enough. I remember most of you. It is good to know you all are doing well. Edna, thanks for taking the initiative. I never had any doubt you would continue to be a leader. Becky

Mario Loya

Rebecca, let me clarify something from your prior post. Everyone in the free world was invited to what has infamously been referred to as "The Loya Party" which is why the TABC and the police were involved. Well that and the slightly offensive flyers that were distributed at the school pep-rally which may have offended Principal Chavez and his very attractive secretary. I don't think it was a coincidence that my brother was dragged out of his Physics final on the last day of school by police officers 2 months after the historical event.
Also, despite the party having my surname it was a very well coordinated event with many contributors. The flyers where provided by Alonso Alvarez due to a misprint on his graduation cards that contained his name and a quote "Party 'til you puck" Yes "puck" not "puke" leaving Alonso with 300 useless cards. A little liquid paper and some high school humor provided by John Alvarez (no relation to Alonso), my brother and myself transformed them into party advertisement. Vodka (20 bottles smuggled over the border) - provided by Richard Coronado and his ex-convict, crazy-ass cousin "Flacco". Kegs provided by some girl's (I forget her name) older brother who was of age. Needless to say he lost his deposit on the 6 kegs from Manny's liqour when the authorities confiscated them. Music and DJ services provided by Raul Marquez even after the authorities where standing menacingly in my backyard. The door manned by John Alvarez employing a very progressive sliding scale cover charge (e.g. Juniors/Seniors $3, Sophomores $4, Freshmen shouldn't have been there so they paid $5). Drama provided by Barb Pehl's mother that demanded the baracaded door be opened. Shortly thereafter the mass arrests ensued. Last but not least the girls from Chiamba (Jenn Barr, Maribel et al.) that helped clean up the mess the following morning, leaving my house cleaner than how my out-of-town parents left it. I apologize if I forgot anyone.

There must be some pictures of the infamous "Loya Party"...We demand you post them Mario!

Smartest thing I ever did: Not take photos.
YouTube, camera phones, video cameras back then would have been life changing to say the least.

Elizabeth Abilez (Abilez)

Ms. Monroe was the best! Everyone loved her and still does... ladies and gentlemen of 1988 she is the journalism teacher at BURGES!!! Thats right. My son Herbie had the great privelage of being a student of journalism and they still maitain excellent accreditations. My hat goes off to all who worked in jouralism back then. Nowadays, yes the computers, digital phones, etc. would lead some to think that it is easier. WRONG!! hahaha it is tough work but Ms. Monroe gets the job done. If I can I would like to post a pic of her of how she looks today. She still looks the same.
She is still one of the rare great teachers.

Elizabeth Abilez (Abilez)

Thank you Becky for remembering Mr. Bill Abilez.
You know him better as my dad. Yes, my dad taught while I was at Burges my senior year. He never had one bad thing to say about any of his students and if he had anything bad about faculty he only told my mom!hahah If anyone else is out there who had him for a class, it would be great to hear from you. He taught a vocational like class that helped out students fill out employment applications, doing job interviews, found jobs, and just so much. He loved his job. He passed away right here at home on 8609 Turrentine in the morning of brain cancer. He kept it secret for seven years. It has been 4 years since his passing. It is still very very hard to know that. But my son Herbie carrys his spirit as a student there. Sometimes you can hear my fathers laugh when Herbie laughs.

Hey Becky, Thank You for the shout out. It is greatly appreciated. But, I'm not doing this alone. Patsy Imai, Maribel Olmos, Evelyn Marquez and Jennifer Barr are a big part of this. There is no way I could do this alone.

Plus, Jeff Brewer and Adriana Fernandez are helping us find missing classmates. Lisa Cardenas is also coming through for us, with pictures and keeping in touch seeing if we need help with anything. She even got her cousin (also an ex-Mustang) to donate a banner for us - Totally Awesome.

Plus, the committee has made monitary donations and Cheers and Loud Shouts Outs go to Joe Salomon and Adriana Fernandez who came through and made GOLD DONATIONS OF $100 each.

We are a Great Class! See Everyone At The Reunion!!

Wow!!!!Such response from little old me:) I stand corrected. Kudos to Edna's partners in crime. I do remember everyone you mentioned. Thanks gang. I personally was partial to the parties on Tejas or was it Jemez? Where was Mario's house?
I say we start the subject....If your life were an 80's movie or song, or video....Which one would it be and who would you be in it.. or what song never fails to take you back. Play along. It will be fun.
My song....You Give Love A Bad Name...Bon Jovi(Who is by the way, totally in love with me). The song reminds me of the first day I met Melissa Mendez. We ditched the rest of the day after that mousey chemistry teacher's class Cantu wasn't it and partied. This was the beginning of my rebellious years. Cheers to you Melissa!!!

Several songs/groups for me:

Rod Stewart - Forever Young, Marie Rodriguez dedicated that song to Pat, Evelyn and myself. So I always think of High School and Marie, Pat and Evelyn.

The Outfield & Beastie Boys - I totally remember Lisa Lewis and High School.

Fast Car by Tracy Chapman and Walk Like an Egyptian from the Bangles - Alma Fuentes and both High School and the Copa in Juarez. U2- Alma Fuentes- road trip to see them in concert in Las Cruces.

Any Belinda Carlisle song - Lorena Navarro and the girls.

two songs that stand out:

1. U2 With or Without You. I bought this cassette (what's a cassette??) in 1987 just before an out of town track & field trip to the West Texas Relays. The Joshua Tree and U2 still remain my favorites to this day.

2. The Outfield Say it isn't So. Everytime we got into Chuck's van on the weekend, this was the first song he'd play before he started cranking the Pink Floyd. I can't listen to this song now without thinking about that silver minivan, Chuck being pulled over by the cops and Tury hiding the beer in the storage compartment under the passenger seat while the rest of us giggled in the back seat.

I also didn't make it to the Loya party (only because my parent's house was Fort Knox!)

Songs/groups would definitely include Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Madonna, The Bangles, U2, INXS, and Guns 'N' Roses. Oooo, and thanks Edna -- I would have forgotten Belinda Carlisle!

This is a GREAT site, by the way. Great job to everyone who has worked on putting it together! Love seeing all the pics of everyone.

Hey,sorry guys, I have not logged in for a couple of days. Let me start by saying.......you are very welcome, Adriana! And by the way guys....I stand corrected. Mr. Estrada died in 1996! Boy, did I have my dates mixed up!Still trying to get that article...have to go to the main library to do some searching.
Hey, on a lighter note, I have been trying to get a hold of some of our fellow classmates, whom are still MIA! Would like to see as many people as possible, so everyone do ur part by helping us find each other! Would like to see as many people as possible.....and besides, we are not getting any younger.

Greetings to everyone! Like Becky, I too have been hangin' around here. A few comments on some of the posts...

Becky - My song would be "Here I Go Again" from Whitesnake. Funny you should mention "You Give Love a Bad Name"... I just saw Bon Jovi in concert here in Tampa a few weeks ago. By the way, Jon says "hi". ;-)

Like Victor, I too dusted off the ol' "Hoofbeats '88" and got a kick of the "big hair" comment from him & Maria. Michele - Your funny notes scattered on the yearbook had me in stitches as well.

Toby - You and Rik should do a Van Halen cover. I seem to "remember" a party on Timberwolf where either Rik and/or you were playing -- ok, I remember there was a keg. ;-) Interesting that you should mention Chucos Tacos. I see an article about Chucos and Chicos has been added to the home page. Being in Florida, I'm just glad that Whataburger has finally made it to this part of the swamp!

Kudos to the Committee Members. If anything else, this forum and website have brought back memories from many familiar names.

Finally, I'll close with a "Becky-like" question:

Have you met anyone famous and, if so, who?

I had the opportunity to meet Eddie Guerrero (El Paso native) and, for those who may not know, World Wrestling Entertainment Superstar. Ironically, I met him here in Tampa (rather than in El Paso) since he lived in the area. He was a standup guy and didn't seem to let his celebrity status go to his head. We shared stories from back home and, of course, both of us missed Chicos Tacos. May he rest in peace.

I am curious if anyone else has had a brush with a celebrity?

Again, great to read so many stories from the "hair days".

Regards,
Jesus

Jesus, I hate you!!!!!!Oh My God! Bon Jovi in concert. I need to make the time to attend that one. My boss went to that concert in Las Vegas...said it was the best concert he's ever been to.
Who I have met that is famous..Ice T.. he was in El Paso for a concert that never happened. I told him i loved him in Law and Order...he seemed bothered that i didn't say I loved his music.
Gloria Estefan...did not like her. Kinda bitchy.

Melissa Mendez (Thompson)

Happy Mother's Day everyone! I am getting a kick out of reading these posts while I have some down time with a rather large cup of coffee and my children cleaning the house....miracles really do happen : )

Ok Becky... Songs?

#1 "You give love a bad name" I remember singing loudly out of the back of your camino down the street with Elizabeth Abilez!

#2 Anything by U2... it still brings back all those "teenage" feelings when you thought life was really serious and everything was life changing!

Ok as far as meeting anyone too famous, not really unless you count Richard Simmons. I guess the closest I have come to it is that I've traveled to New York alot and it seems like I frequently ate dinner next to famous people... one time Rosie O'Donnell and another time several members from the cast of The Sopranos, but its not like I could meet them ha ha or even stare : ) Also been in a lot of airports... funniest story is I glanced up one time and there is OJ running across the airport too funny, reminded me of his old commercials!!!!!

Jesus!!
Hey, they you are, finally came out of the woodwork!! Glad to hear that you are doing well in life! Hey, very interesting story about Eddie Guerrero- RIP- I met him when he was starting out his wrestling career, in Juarez, and as a matter of fact, I still have his autograph!!! I've been fortunate to meet my very good share of celebreties....not too long ago, I met Robert Wagner. Remember him from the Austin Powers movies?? I have also met many a rock stars, and many many professional wrestlers, both american and lost and lots of mexican...aka luchadores. I'm trying to dig up my photo albums...and I'l post some on my section. Looking forward to seeing you at the reunion!!

The entire Outfield album takes me back. It takes me back to our sophmore year and the partying we did with the senior class of 86 (Tommy Tinajero, Pete Chavez, Gino Gonzalez, and Tury) I remember one of the (Tinajero) Street Boys concerts that David Tinajero and I went to. Run DMC's You be Ill'n reminds me of Lisa Lewis and a crazy snow day that we spent running around the neighborhood having snow fights. Jump by Van Halen reminds me of Alma Fuentes and Lance Nobles. Don't ask me why. Bizarre Love Triangle, New Order----Victor Nunez and the Copa.

Grace.........do you remember the phrase we all use to say around Twana? "Don't you be coming into my world trying to take over!"

Movies that remind me of those years, you can't deny that the Brat Pac movies take all of us back but I think the Breakfast Club just had a little of all of us in it.

I got to meet Robin Crosby, the lead guitarist for RATT. He was a sweet and huge teddy bear. He lived in El Paso for a few years and gave guitar lessons to make some money.

My experience at the Loya party was short lived. It seems i was there about 30 minutes in the backyard before Police showed up and I think MADD as well.
As police made their way in... We made our escape over the fence and through the neighbors' yards and calmly made a full sprint to our vehicle and left. if I remember correctly we called it a night.

Good Idea Becky
&&& Victor Nunez and I used to listen to Book of Love and Inxs. James Chester and i always played"Bangin" by Outfield or "Living on Prayer" by Bon Jovi (Saw that concert). Michael Swopes in the boys baskeball locker room, would run around singing into his brush Belinda Carlisle.. It was hilarious. Of course U2, Def Lepard, "Cherry Pie" by Warrant, and at the Copa,Derby or XO whenever New Order "Bizarre Love Triangle" would come on.. Victor Nunez and I would get down on our knees and pray. Good Times.

Your assistance...

On a separate note... we are working really hard to make contact with everyone from our graduating class so that at least, they can log in and let us know how they are doing. Even if they can't come to the reunion. On a positive note in about a week and a half i am about half way through finding locate information on half of our classmates. Hopefully they will log on soon. This weekend alone I made contact with the likes of Luis Tovar, Roger Dominguez, Arlissa Snively, Elizabeth Alvarado, Ed Ornelas, Dan McGill, Matt Alvarado, Sergio Cervantes, Lisa Lewis and more....

But there's a few I might need a little assistance in locating... for example I saw someone mention James Sanford... I could use a little help locating him. Send me an email if you know anything that might help. Thanks everyone!!
